That is illegal regardless of whether you make money. What your producer is saying is that you're unlikely to get much shit for it. But you never know. You can sort of get round it by someone else singing it because then it is a "cover" and not a remix/bootleg. But then you have the songwriters rights to think about. Yeah my producer said about someone else re-singing it. Just if you have a vocal re-sung, it doesn't often sound as good as the original.
