Lyktum returns with a breathtaking new album called ‘Home’. Having just released it to the universe on his spiritual home label, the legendary Iono-Music’, we wanted to hear aaaall about it!

Hi Dejan, good to catch up again! The last time we interviewed you was back in 2020 when the world was a very different place due to Covid restrictions. How have you been since then?

Hi Jessica, it's great to be back here! Oh yes, 2020 was indeed a different place for many of us. As time passed and we gradually exited those restrictions I've been working on myself more by stepping into the best version that I can be.

You have a new album just out on Iono-Music called 'Home'. Tell us about the title, please?

Well some of my fans who have followed my entire discography will likely realise that the title 'Home' is a continuation of a concept album previously released as 'Mission 5D', which was also a part of the sequel, which followed on from my album called 'Human'.

All three albums are connected concept-wise, where past, present, and future merge into a singular, eternal moment. The title 'Home' comes after 'Mission 5D', why?! because 'Mission5D' was considered a journey of The Spirit coming back 'Home', and the body of a 'Human' is the 'Home' for the Spirit.

When you connect those dots, then these three albums are a finished sequel of a story I've been trying to hint at to my listeners over the past few years; a story that I feel is quite profound.

How did the album come together?

During the pandemic, I finalised the 'Mission 5D' album, and had already started working on the new album 'Home' in 2021, while I was also releasing some single releases on the side, such as ‘Grande Espirito', 'Mindset Matters' and others.

I love storytelling within music production, and it has always been a favourite thing of mine, sticking to the ideas and the concepts my mind perceives. I continuously push my own limits by transcending my mind and heart into a brand-new space, a fresh canvas so-to-speak.

Each new album I make is a devotion to the artform itself. To keep things fresh and inspiring, for other generations of producers to come and innovate the same way I did, and to approach album creation in a fresh perspective. Having that in mind is enough to do what you love with a full heart and make a transformative experience.

The first track 'Eywa' is a collab with La Monnique. How did this arise?

A few months ago, when I had just returned to my hometown in Serbia for finalising my album, I contacted the very talented Monika Pajazitovic aka La Monnique (a contester of Serbia's Got Talent) about our collaboration. When I sent her a request suggesting the idea of our collaboration we both realised that we've been way too shy and afraid to contact each other for a long period of time, even though our homes are just a ten minute drive from apart. Both of us had that same idea; it was such a good flow to collaborate with Monika. 'Eywa' or ‘Aya' was inspired by the Avatar franchise. I wrote the lyrics for the track 'Eywa' in such a way that it describes what James Cameron (the director of Avatar) suggested may have been hidden from the public eye, as people may not have been ready to hear it yet.

'Awesome Universe' and 'Electric Forest' are two of my absolute favourites - so mesmerising and hypnotic. What are some of the most significant tracks for you?

Awesome Universe' is awesome in its nature, inspired by Floe by Philip Glass and 'Interstellar', with its melodies. For me 'Eywa', ‘Forever NOW' and 'Wakan Tanka' are more significant in some respects as the overall themes are so magical and include brand-new harmonies which I used new techniques to achieve. These were the hardest tracks to finish.

You have an awesome track called 'Wakan Takan' which is the native American term for the sacred or the divine and is translated as 'Great Spirit'. What does this mean to you?

Why thank you! As you know, I already have a track called 'Grande Espirito' and it's basically the same title only in a different language. The Great Spirit is a direct connection in all of my doings. I channel everything I do with love from God, Jesus Christ, also known as the Great Spirit, or the Holy Ghost, also known as 'Wakan Tanka'. I show my sincere gratitude with these titles and don’t take credit for the gift I have - as it comes from above.

I open my mind so I can open my heart, and when that happens, I let the divinity of the Great Spirit flow through tje soul's expression of joy, reaching that beautiful essence, while being fully immersed in a feeling of gratitude.

I love the sounds used, especially those in 'Intuition Test'. What are some of your current favourite pieces of hardware and/or VSTs?

I do use a lot of wavetable VSTs that help me combine and consolidate such diverse sounds. We're talking more than ten oscillators doing their thing within one synthesizer sound. I will write a list of what I use mostly these days, so it's easier for you to check them out individually, here goes: Behringer DeepMind (Hardware)
Access Virus (Hardware)
Rapid(VST)
Vital (VST)
Diva (VST) and
Serum (VST) plus others.

'Path of Love' is a beautiful title for the last track of the album. Can you tell us what this title refers to?

After all the experiences we have to make a choice eventually which can redirect us towards our own path and help us evolve into our best selves. For me personally 'Path of Love' is another way of saying 'Life Path Number 33’ as it's of great significance in my own journey. I've been on this path for quite some time now, and trust me when I say this, this life path is more than magical, not just because I'm 33 years old now, but its manifestation is such a powerful force of creation of The Great Spirit himself.

When you finish an album do you feel relieved, sad, nervous, satisfied, excited, or something else?

As always, when I finish an album, I feel quite satisfied with the new innovative results. I do feel quite anxious when it comes to releasing it and seeing how people will receive and perceive it. Although in the case of this album called 'Home', and the current events erupting in the world, such as the war in Israel where our own Psytrance community was attacked by terrorists, I do feel strange releasing music in such sad and devastating times. I mean no disrespect to the victims and families affected by it; the album was scheduled long before this came to be. I already released an album during difficult times in the past - when the pandemic hit - with 'Mission 5D’ and I gave people a piece of my soul to be with, while passing through those moments. This time is no different.

Life is passing, and tomorrow is not promised for anyone, so we must always take action and move forward towards a better reality that we co-create. I do this with love for a better world of peace and unity where we can gather tribes of diverse backgrounds, to dance together and celebrate life. Music is freedom and an escape from the devastating and fragile reality we're all facing right now. So, peace and unity are my main objectives.

The artwork is once again superb. Can you tell us about the inspiration for this image?

Thank you kindly! The artwork of the 'Home' album was done yet again by the talented Sean Allum, aka 'EIoh Projects' from the USA, the same artist who designed artwork for my 'Human' album.

The inspiration for it has a lot to do with the imagination of Eywa and its diverse unconditional kind of love, for its medicinal purposes found in the Amazonian Forest. Whenever I suggest an idea to Sean, he'd always blend in those graphics so seamlessly that it warms my soul just watching the process coming into existence. His own interpretations of visions also helped me quite a lot inspiration-wise, and I’m eternally grateful for his efforts and assistance in doing this collaboration with me.

Apart from the album release, what do you have planned for the future that you are especially looking forward to?

I have become a partner of the super great Element Festival in Fortaleza Brasil and also a resident, and we are working full power as we speak for our next edition of the festival. I have also been doing another musical project on the side with a friend, which is not announced yet, but all I can say is that it has elements of Organic House and Techno-Psy.

Lastly, how is your 'Hero's Journey' going?

My hero's journey is going well and has put me on a correct path in life, exactly where I need to be at the exact time in the timeline of the universe, doing exactly what I’m supposed to be doing. I’m happy and stronger now. Mentally, physically and spiritually I am stepping into my purpose and being in service to others.

Dejan/Lyktum - thanks for taking the time for this interview and all the best with the incredible album!
