The RED PROJECT is an ongoing initiative aimed at regenerating empty buildings with cultural events, and by doing so help to regenerate their local areas. A child of its times, the RED PROJECT is a cultural response to the use of wasted space caused by the recent economic crisis.
The project began in an old language school at the back of what was The Foundry in Shoreditch. In spring 2010 the RED GALLERY launched on site as a pop gallery and events space with a projected three month life span. It was due to be demolished that summer to make way for the Art ‘Otel. True to market form, the hotel project ground to a halt and the RED GALLERY continued to host a series of notable art and music events throughout 2010.
In January 2011, the directors of the RED PROJECT signed a one year lease for the entire site, comprising not only the building containing the RED GALLERY and the two floors of office space above, but also a 15,000 square foot plot of land behind the building, which used to operate as a car park.
The ongoing work at the site on Rivington Street in 2011 will see local artists given free studio spaces, with further discounted rents for creative businesses; a cutting edge music and art program in the RED GALLERY; the launch of London’s first late night food market; and a variety of outdoor events from live gigs to world class skateboard showcases.
The directors of the RED PROJECT are actively looking at other spaces around London for this ‘cultural house sitting’ project to develop, with the expressed aim of sourcing progressive ways to breathe new life into creative people, places and spaces.
