It's that time of the week again peeps!
www.newtechpirates.com
For the first hour this week I'm joined by Inhale resident Dan Ling.
Dan's love of DJing and music have always gone hand in hand. Inspired by the bass-heavy garage sound of tunes like RIP Groove's 'Double 99' he bought his first set of decks in 1997, a fondly remembered pair of direct drive Sound Labs that now sadly RIP themselves.
The legendary Gatecrasher in Sheffield opened his ears to a previously undiscovered sound, the tough, euphoric trance spun by Paul Oakenfold, Judge Jules and Scott Bond, and he was soon sold on a new way of life.
By the time Dan returned to London his musical apprenticeship was well served. With hours of practice and a hefty stack of vinyl at his disposal he started long-standing partnership, 'Breathe', with fellow Inhale resident Chris Rayner. Experiencing the flourishing, progressive sound emanating from clubs such as Bedrock he also began to include more pronounced element of house music in his sets.
With a two and a half year residency in Brixton, Breathe's tough, chunky sound saw them invited to play at various clubs including Smile, Mesmerize and Brighton's Ning. Friend and sound-engineer Dew cemented the partnership, who soon began their first forays into production attracting the interest of labels like Thunderground and Voodoo along the way.
Today Dan's distinctive brand of tough-funk is most comparable to that of Jon Carter or Darren Emerson. A consummate showman who plays house music with attitude.
Very special guests this week are The Sharp Boys.
With a busy international DJ diary The Sharp Boys have regularly hosted their radio shows from foreign shores including: "Tonic" at Space in Ibiza, "The Ra club" in Las Vegas, "Code" In Tokyo, "Mezzanine" In San Francisco, "Trade" in Los Angeles, Winter Music Conference in Miami, "Slinky" in Sydney, Australia.
In July 2000 the boys were asked to record the "Essential Mix" for Pete Tong's Radio 1 show for the second year running - the show was later nominated for the coveted "Essential Mix Of The Year" at the 2000 Erikson / Muzik Magazine Dance awards. Other guest spots on radio 1 include a 30 minute mix with Danny Rampling. Last summer Steven and George played a live 1 hour set on Judge Jules' show from the Gay Pride event in Hyde Park in front of 80,000 people.
The Sharp Boys are managed by Alister Jamieson at "Ambush Management" (part of the huge 19 Entertainment group) who is currently in negotiation with various radio stations regarding the boys future plans on the airwaves.
Don't forget to tune into tonight's show from 10pm!
