Time for a retrospective review. I do these from time to time; sometimes for labels like Lost Language and other labels but this one is particularly special because it was one of my favourites from the Karma album from way back in 1997. Yes, okay, maybe Silence was the most famous one but Heaven's Earth was a hidden gem, despite not being on the main disc of the album.
The remixes of Heaven's Earth were energetic and ever so slightly trancey. While many plumped for the Matt Darey remix, which was a high-ended trance assault, I plumped for the Key South Remix. Why? Well, a number of reasons. Actually two. a: the build and b: the vocal. The gothic architecture of the original track tends to come through on this remix, more than it does on the Darey mix. While the CD single I have in my collection has the edit of this version, the digital EP has the full length 9:06 version and that version has always been my go-to. Plus its more expansive; not unlike the Trouser Enthusiasts mixes of Dannii.
As I said, the album version of Heaven's Earth is very different from the remixes and is very gothic in tone but these remixes take it to the dancefloor. It was included on the second bonus disc of the album and would have made a good addition to the single release instead of the edit we got. If you can find both CDs of the single, buy them, or take a punt and go for the digital; purely for the full length Key South Remix.
In summary then, yes, Silence might get all the plaudits, and the detractors due to some of the remixes, but Heaven's Earth really is the jewel in the Karma crown. In spite of its slow and brooding original album version, there are two really good remixes of it. As I say, I plump for the Key South mix; with its structural build and the use of the vocal. Matt Darey's mix, and dub, are also worthy additions. In fact, I think its time for a redux or two. Maybe.
