DJ Tom-X vs. Warmduscher

» Cocaine 2009

Genre: European Hard Trance/Hardstyle

No it’s not a remake of the DJ Wag classic before you ask, but the 2002 original of "Cocaine", by Tom-X. But who really cares, because it's just another reason to use some nasty “cocaine” samples with tonnes of Germanic stomping noise thrown in for good measure... So not too far off the Wag classic then!

The Warmduscher Mix is full on Hardstyle wrongness. This is apparent from the very first beat, which contains high pitched kicks, swirling scream type noises, screeches of all manor of wrongness; and all before the 1 minute mark! The bass drops the track into a monstrously hard beat that has a strangely catchy groove created by a single distorted lead that carries the tune into the breakdown. Here an epically distorted guitar with tonnes of feedback goes absolutely mental (and on for far too long) before finally introducing the breakdown, which is unfortunately a bit of a let down after its massive introduction. There is a nice bit later where it slows down then speeds up to well over 200 BPM and then back down again which makes this well worth dropping just to see if there’s any clubbers crazy enough to try to keep up, but something tells me if you’re mad enough to listen to this kind of music then you’re certainly stupid enough to give it a try!

The DJ Tom-X Remix is much more like the original, pounding old skool German Hard Trance, only with more filthy bass kicks. The bass is a very typical off beat womp and the synth work is all very Euro in style and sound. A slightly dark spoken female vocal with plenty of reverb and delay forms the basis of an early breakdown before it kicks off properly with plenty of drive. The intro riff and main riff are both rather good too, and to top things of I can confirm that there is no sped up sequence at the end, just some snares instead. Oh, and more bass kicks. Lots of bass kicks.
Love it!

Wavetraxx is one of the few producers whom I can honestly say I have never heard a bad track from, and I have been quite a fan for a number of years. This one starts with a pulsating little sub bass that sounds great on its own, but a gritty off beat number joins the fray before too long. It’s certainly less uplifting than just about everything else he’s ever made which is a nice surprise, instead choosing to stay true to the driving and dark ethos of the originals. There’s a dirty combination of sounds that whilst simple works incredibly well. It’s not until the breakdown when the track starts to get more uplifting, and as the synths fade up you know it’s been worth the wait.
Another sterling effort from the man from Switzerland!

The last mix on offer here comes from Dizmaster, a very fast up and coming Hardstyle producer with some seriously badass tracks under his belt over the last year. It starts with a very strange rolling drum loop, followed by snares and random hats. The vocal gets the Hardstyle treatment with some seriously wrong noises being generated, followed by a bass drop to die for. It’s very similar to his previous bass settings but this time it seems to be even larger than ever before. The amount of sounds going on here is quite impressive, making it a very full production that’s very polished. The main break contains an ear piercingly shrill plinky sequence before the synths kick in and it all goes a bit mental again. A very different Hardstyle offering compared to the Warmdushcer remix and certainly worthy of a separate purchase.
