Alex Kidd vs. Kidd Kaos

» Kiddstock Theme

Reviewed by Dean Zone / Submitted 18-08-08 10:03

Label: Kiddfectious
Format: Digital
Genre: Hard Trance/Hardstyle

A festival doesn’t seem to be complete without an official theme to accompany it these days, and Alex Kidd’s “Kiddstock” is no different, even though it was relatively small in comparison to some of the ones more well known for having a “theme” (most notably Q-Dance and it’s associated events).

On engineering duties is up and coming producer Kidd Kaos, whose style is quite similar to that of Alex Kidd’s anyway, so it’s a good match of styles from the beginning. The original starts with a wonky beat where the percussion deliberately is slightly off, with early vocal chops added, which is used as a lead almost. The bass is a moving, side chained off beat number that is not as loud or menacing as I was expecting. In fact, considering the line up and music at the festival, I was quite surprised that this was not Hardstyle. The full vocal starts from the moment the bass drops, and even though it add a lot to the track, it seems to have been distorted or something, and as a result is not very clean, and I am having trouble hearing exactly what is being said. The vocal continues right the way through the track and into the breakdown, where it’s expertly used to bring in the very anthemic main riff. The drop back in doesn’t fuck about, and although it might have spent ages building, the crescendo is more than worth it.

On remix duties is A*S*Y*S* (or Acid Save Your Soul). Here is a far more the type of track I was expecting, a screaming, almost Techy and intelligent Hardstyle track. The much more sparingly used vocal is put to one side for the intro, where a monster bass takes things to another level completely. The full vocal appears in the main break, but everything moves much quicker so it never becomes the focal point of the track, instead some killer Acid and a chopped up, almost stabby riff is.
It certainly is the Yin to the originals Yang, with the only slight resemblance being the same vocal, otherwise it might as well have been a totally original production.

Very much like the festival itself, these two tunes sum up well what Kiddstock was all about. Underground, unpretentious music for a harder generation. A match made in heaven.
