Steve Allen and Ben Alonzi vs. Soundborn

It seems a week cant go by without another Steve Allen and Ben Alonzi production falling into my email inbox these days. With such a phenomenal output rate, it surprises me they still haven’t run out of ideas yet!

Here however they team up with Soundborn to deliver some more Trance business of a very uplifting nature. Starting with a larger than usual kick, the original mix wastes little time getting up to speed. A short sequence of less than 30 seconds precedes the bass, which is a sweet, moving number. 1 bar synth rolls build up the energy really well with the percussion, before it leaves us briefly only for the 1 bar synth to become a full blown number. There are some wicked touches here too, like when the synth sound seemingly just morphs into a completely different one. The breakdown is brief for a Steve Allen and Ben Alonzi track, but it keeps the momentum and means that it never gets boring. The only other thing worth noting is that it’s a very short piece, at pretty much 5 minutes on the dot. Quick fire mixing anyone?

The Eldritch Project Remix is in a bit more of a laid back, summer vibe, preferring to go with a slightly Electro style bass it seems. Don’t let that put you off though, this is certainly no crossover! The Synth fades in quite early, supported by a pad that sounds like it could be a subtle wind instrument. The breakdown goes for a much more protracted, drawn out, pad heavy affair. Certainly on a more epic vibe than the original, but it works and that’s all that matters. At well over 7 minutes too it’s probably a safer bet for the majority of the trance DJs out there than the original.

Next up is the Nisona Remix. As solid kick heralds in a moving lead that motions some early pads in the background, soon followed by a whopping great bass that I certainly wasn’t expecting. A well placed bass note change is the only thing really worthy of note however until the breakdown, which uses some excellent FX on a reversed cymbal to bring you down, then back up. A cool break beat sequence compliments the breakdown nicely, before it finally kicks back in. A much less epic interpretation for sure, but a good choice if you want something slightly different.

This is followed by the Stealth remix. With a slightly dark start including nasty sounding sweeps and atmospherics, it maybe lacks a bit of energy in the build up. The bass is a monster of an off beat number, but for me it wasn’t worked into to the track very well. When the synths start it sounds like a bit of a mismatch to me – quite a dark beat and dirty bass, yet a really uplifting trance lead. It has worked many times before, but for me, this one doesn’t. The breakdown is an improvement however, with a slightly classical feel to the warm pads making this stand out a bit. The main synth however sounds a bit chopped up, almost like it has been taken from an electro tune and again doesn’t work for me at all. It lacks any energy at all after the drop out of the breakdown and a very late build sequence with a much better bass notation is too little too late to save this track which is by far the worst mix of this package.

Mind Design take the honours with the last remix of this package, which is a notable improvement on the Stealth Remix. A fairly innocuous start brings in a large sweep, followed by the bass which fades in. Ok so it doesn’t have a defined mix point, but who cares? A nice sounding, repeating synth is the most notable addition to proceedings here, which moves well into the breakdown just before the 3 minute mark. Computer style Sci-Fi noises add atmospheric depth to the breakdown which is a little plain otherwise, but the drop makes up for that, taking the lead from a drone that comes out of nowhere.
