First up from Luca Antolini is the extreme mix, which does exactly what it says on the tin! Starting with a high pitched kick and a sub bass that sounds like a direct rip from Walt classic “Let The Music Play” is certainly no bad thing in my book. Time stretched vocals swirl over the top maybe slightly too loud, before a strange spoken female vocal takes over, leading into a pounding drop. The side chained bass is as tight as you like and sounds great when combined with Scot Project style stabs.
It’s hard to mix, but I am prepared to make the extra effort needed.
The breakdown takes a much more euphoric vibe with an almost Beach Stringz style guitar sounding lead, before the “You Drive Me Crazy, Somebody Told Me” vocal which has been overused a bit for me.
The main riff isn’t amazing but it does the job, however the rest of the track is an excellent example of why this label has been going strong for so long, and why you can always find one of their tracks in my CD wallet!
7/10
The Looking Over mix takes on an entirely different musical perspective from the extreme mix. Starting off with a low, sub bass, kick and clap combo gets it off to a quick start, before a faded synth builds up to the bass introduction proper. It’s got a much more of an Electro/House feel to the sounds, but it is much faster than any Electro Trance around today. The breakdown however is where this track excels, fusing hard rock and break beat seamlessly; and it works really well. The vocals work better over this breakdown, and whilst musically it’s less my sort of style than the extreme mix, Luca has dared to be different here and has pulled it off in great style. Good work!
