Not long after the follow up to the launch single Bionic, Deton-8 (aka D10 or Darren Jones to his mum) return with the follow up on his own label, Viper Trax. Evil takes its name from the sample stolen from the classic “Roots of Evil” track by DJ Cyglas. Some (including me) consider this tune a classic, so another classic remix is the last thing I wanted. Thankfully this is an original production with a stolen vocal, so I can forgive Dazza. For the time being anyway…
Let me get one thing out of the way firstly – this is a far better track than the Deton-8 mix of Bionic, which for me was fairly average. Hardstyle not being his sound of choice I can forgive him that, but thankfully Evil shows a far greater understanding of the sound.
Chopped vocals and bass kicks make up the intro of the original, followed by short break where a mental synth goes a bit mental before all hell just breaks loose. The bass is a droning growler that doesn’t have as much impact as it could have done, but the star here is definitely the main riff/synth.
It doesn’t feel like it’s been made by a British guy and definitely has a Dutch feel to it, which is no bad thing.
The main breakdown is pure Evil, with an eerie build up into full blown Hardstyle madness.
To be honest the vocal sample adds very little and probably would have been best left out or with something original in there instead. The tune does what it says on the tin, I don’t need to be told that by stealing an old vocal.
7/10
D10 is the name under which Darren is most well known after lots of releases on the likes of Masif and S-Trax. It is also definitely a superior production alias, as he seems far more at home producing European Hard Trance than he does Hardstyle.
Starting with a kick and sub bass, the percussion filters up well, accompanied by some cool atmospherics, loops and fills before the mini breakdown. Much more defined than the original I thought, the sample also works better in this type of track.
The main riff starts slightly earlier than the original too, with the main break being much darker. When the main riff changes to the synth more suited to hard trance you can’t help but be shocked as to how well it works, considering it was (supposedly) originally a Hardstyle tune.
Ok so maybe it’s not as frantic or relentless as the original mix but the production work, sounds and general build makes this a superior production in my eyes.
8/10
