Dr Willis – Pill Freak

Ok, so the constant drug references in clubland may be starting to grate my nerves a bit recently, and yes the sample here taken from The Matrix has been done so many times I can’t even begin to comprehend the number of tracks which feature it. But whilst originality may be lacking in certain areas for the good Doctor, it isn’t in other.

Whilst said sample has been used many times before, it’s used to well enough effect, ushering in the throbbing and seemingly evolving bass really well. Possibly one of the most driving tunes I have heard in a good while, this is full of acid and unrepentant right up to the breakdown. Here it evolves into a dark, sinister and slightly menacing track.
It’s extremely intelligent in terms of sounds and atmospherics, reminiscent in some ways of Psy Trance, which is a good thing in my book.
Overall the vocal I would say is used a few times too many, and as it’s a well known sample (the earliest track to use this I believe was Blue Pill by Uberdruck) it is difficult to believe that Dr Willis was not aware that it had been used in what is regarded as a classic tune of the same genre. Apart from that, I really can’t find much fault with this.

8/10
