Andrea Montorsi – Don’t Leave Me (Original and Alternative Mixes)
Italian hard trance label Red Alert returns again with 2 mixes of European Hard Trance goodness for the whole family. The last release on this label was a distinctly hit and miss affair, so would this new release fair any better?
The original mix of this sounds like a tech-trance tune to begin with. Flat kicks combine with simple percussion and echoing vocals and sirens to make this an interesting tune to mix in. The bass sounds like it was taken from a Tommy Pulse track, but that is no bad thing.
Lots of atmospheric sounds link well with gated stabs, and the filtered vocal and excellent use of pauses gives this track lots of energy in the build up to the main breakdown. The main vocal in this is huge. I absolutely love it. It’s got the sing along factor in droves, it memorable, and it works so well with the music. Fantastic use of pads and other sounds combine to make one of the best breakdown sequences I have heard this year.
I’m not sure if there should be kick and rides through the breakdown, considering how good it is, but it doesn’t ruin it enough to put me off.
Perfectly combining hard elements and a proper trance breakdown, the original mix does the business for me every time.
8/10
One thing that seems to be rather prevalent in hard trance in Europe is alternate mixes. Instead of paying someone to do a remix, some producers prefer to remix a tune themselves. This is only a good thing when the result is significantly different to the original.
Here the alternate mix goes for a much more sombre, emotive and slightly harder feel than the original.
The alternative starts off sounding very old school German hard trance. See anything on Overdose and you will see what I mean. The vocal get chopped and looped a lot in this mix, complementing the almost electro style bass line and double kick drum. This tune doesn’t try to be the uplifting one the original is, with a much darker feel to the breakdown. The feel of the tune means the vocal still works, although it sounds better in the more uplifting original. The kick running through the breakdown is done much more subtly that the original, which was nice to notice.
There are significant changes to all of the sounds in this mix, none more so than that of the main riff, which has been transformed to a much more driving sound. Also worth mentioning is the percussion is much more driving than the original too.
7/10
