Label: Hard Kandy
Format: 12" Vinyl
Genre: European Hard Trance
The first release on Hard Kandy (NFX – No Go, Go For Launch) has been one of my favourite tunes since I got my mitts on it. Based in Australia, it was proper pumping European Hard Trance (although it was all about the Dark By Design vs. Alex Kidd remix in all honesty) So how does the sequel measure up?
If you can get past the quite frankly cheesy name (trust them damn Europeans to come up with something like that, although in fairness I have seen worse names for tunes!) what lies beneath are 2 mixes of hard trance goodness!
Original mix
The original is the less hard mix. Starting with a double kick (I love those!), lots of swoops and echoed acid, the kick then doubles up to a thunderous thud and rising synth stabs build the intro up nicely, when they all filter put, when a suitably fat whoosh brings in a nicely different 3 note bass line. A good start!
Based around the synth stabs, the tune chops them up leading to the main break, where a distorted lead riff filters in. The vocal sample isn’t great (take a guess at what it says!) but at least it doesn’t try and sound like it was taken from a porno which makes a nice change. Its not the hardest track out there, neither is it particularly uplifting. You could be forgiven for thinking this is a Kamui tune or indeed anything on Traffic (the German Traffic, which Dr Willis has had releases on before) which is definitely no bad thing. More like this please Dr Willis!

Tommy Pulse remix
Tommy Pulse may not be a name most people would be familiar with, but in his native Holland he is something of a Superstar in the hard dance scene.
Starting with a wicked distorted kick and a slightly too cheesy clap, it wastes no time getting started, with half the vocal signalling the mix point. The bass is a very subtle off beat I would like to have been more prominent. There is some really good use of FX in the build up to breakdown, which could easily be mistaken for a DJ cutting with the Flange or Filter on a bigger system. The main break is quite short, preferring to just get on with stomping the fuck out of the dance floor.
One thing that separates this from the original though is that this tune has acid. Lots of acid! It doesn’t show itself until after the main breakdown but its so driving you can see why. Lots of chopped sections, missing beats and filters mean you can’t really do too much with this or you will look like your overdoing it, but who cares when it’s just so mental? I recognise some of the background noises from other Tommy Pulse releases on his own label Stealth Industries, which is a bit lazy, but there is a lot more here that I haven’t heard in his previous tunes.
