It’s been a few years since the excellent DJ Ben Eye and Log: One EP was released (Uberdruck 021), during which time the duo have been rather silent. Thankfully their new release on Germantrance.com , Afterglow, is no let down.
I don’t mind paying the same amount of money for a one sided vinyl as you do for a vinyl with 2 sides. I sometimes find a tune with potential that was unrealised by the producer and sometimes you find the remix to be far superior to the original. Indeed, it is not uncommon to find releases where the original is never even released. But it is with great pleasure I am able to say: this tune does not need a remix and is worth every penny!
There isn’t much I don’t love about this tune. I love the way the kick drum starts of snappy then seems to go flat when the bassline kicks in, I love the high pitch synth stabs and the way it introduces the bass. Hell, I even love the way the bass seems to go “womp”.
About one third of the way through when you hear the mini break introduce the intro riff, I knew I was onto a winner. You could easily be mistaken for thinking this is an unreleased DJ Scot Project tune from 2002 (yes it is that good).
But the thing I love most about this tune is the way it fools you into thinking you’ve heard everything it has to offer, and when you expect it to drop back in after the main breakdown, the main riff comes out of nowhere. Late in the track maybe, but it’s a very nice surprise and I can’t wait for a chance to drop this out. Peak time tunage at its best. Here’s hoping I don’t have to wait years for the next release from these two producers.
10/10
