Following on from the DBD 002 remix EP we have the newest offering, Money Shot, on Dark by Designs self titled label.
A. Dark by Design and Alex Kidd feat Jane Parker – Money Shot
The A side is a collaboration between DBD and Alex Kidd, with a Jane Parker on Vocals. Whilst slightly faster than the B side Hate it doesn’t quite have as much energy to it. The lyrics make about as much sense as the average Red Hot Chilli Peppers song (i.e. none what so ever), but that’s not to say that it is not done well and they clearly had fun chopping and adding effects to the vocal (Steve Murano would have been proud). Lots of snares and a typical throbbing offbeat bass line gives away the fact that this is a DBD production, which is no bad thing. The European influence is here in a big way, which again is par for the course with these two.
Money Shot is a much more accessible as a track than Hate is, and I have a feeling this was made the A side because of it.

B. Dark by Design and Mcbunn – Hate
The B side is where this release shines however. Imagine a cross between dark European hard trance with a heavy metal feel and Hate is what you get. Taking a fantastic vocal sample from Slipknot’s “I Am Hated”, DBD and Mcbunn have created one of the most original pieces of hard dance I have heard for a good few years. The bass line throbs away nicely in the background whilst the chopped vocal (done similarly to Money Shot) creates a chunky yet eerie groove, until the first mini break, when all hell breaks loose. The main breakdown reveals a peach of a main riff and it all goes a bit mental from there to the finish. Despite the love it or hate it (excuse the pun) feedback I have received from other DJs (usually because they seem to think it is a hardstyle track), it always does the business on the dance floor. The really great thing about this is that you can play it in a hard trance or hardstyle set without it looking out of place.
9/10
