Vacuum's 20th realease sees Ingo in his Digital Cowboy guise team up with rising talent A-Star for insane & My Definition. I decided a closer look was definitely in order.
Insane begins with a deep driving kickdrum & clicky percussion which builds gradually with the help of an echoed 'Insane' vocal and some wicked digital effects. As you would expect from Ingo, the tune has a very smooth feel and before long, a short drumroll signals the start of the bubbling bassline rythm.
As the track moves on there's excellent use of alot of digital sounds which glide seemlessly over each other to give a tough but techy feel. The bass briefly dies down for one phrase before the breakdown begins in which a dark synth sequence filters up and down, gradually being joined by some higher stabs which compliment each other perfectly. More effects are thrown in before a long swoosh and simple but effective drum fill lead to the insane vocal and then the kickdrum, rythm and synth patterns join forces at the drop.
This tune is typical of Ingo. Excellent layering of loads of differrent and original sounds over a solid track foudation and manic riff. The various bleeps, screeches and digital effects float in and out, perfectly complimenting the other various changes in sound when they occur, proving once again that Ingo is a true wizard in the recoding studio! Superb stuff
My Definition has a slightly tougher feel to it. The initial percussion reminds me of the sound a train makes as it's wheels clunk over the loose rails. Again the digital effects are layered in systematic fashion with one of the highlights being a subtle squelch breaking each bar1
More hi-hats and taps are addd before the kick fades for one bar to allow the vocal to proclaim 'My Definition Is This!'. The heavy two-tone bassline rythm is then swung onto action and is quickly joined by a techy, filtered squelchy rythm which really makes your head nod!
In the main break loads of warbling sounds collide with long futuristic synth chords over a low bass mumble before the main deep rythm is faded in. Before long a higher synth stab rythm in the same sequnce is introduced and both are 'wound down' and then sped back up along with a building swoosh and a series of cymbol crashes, beofre the vocal invites all the components to join the fray and run riot on your ears!
In my opinion, My Definition will stand a better chance of seeing it's way onto the nation's hardfloors because it's that little bit more driving than Insane with more going on overall. However both tunes are nothing less than brilliant, sitting bang smack in the middle of hard trance and hard house. Two very powerful tunes which are well structured, with seemless production from this pairing! Most definitely 'in the box'!
Will we see more from Ingo and A-Star in the future???? We're not sure yet, but fingers crossed if this release is anything to go by! Well done both producers and everyone at Top Draw!
