We get the low down from Lange

Reported by Tom Cypher / Submitted 04-05-10 06:49

One of the UK’s most forward thinking Trance artists, Lange is back with the second instalment in his compilation series ‘Lange Presents Intercity’ to be released on New State Music this April. Lange’s Intercity radio show is ever growing in popularity, consistently found within the top 100 dance podcasts on iTunes and has already become one of the staple shows for trance fans; owing its notoriety for showcasing the most exciting new releases in trance and related genres. The first album, ‘Intercity: Summer 2009’, was highly acclaimed by both punters and the dance press and now its time to unveil the second instalment, “Intercity Spring 2010”. Harder Faster catch up with the man himself ahead of the release…

Hi Stuart! First and foremost how are you today and what are you currently up to?

I'm very well thanks and sitting on a flight to LA. On my way to a couple of gigs in USA. Tonight it's 'Once Upon A Night' with Ferry Corsten in Hollywood, and tomorrow I'm over in New York for one of Armins ASOT 450 shows.

The latest edition to your compilation series is out soon, how did this start and what is the inspiration behind it?

I started the compilation series last summer. It’s a chance for me to collate some of the best recent and upfront tunes I've played, or will be playing in the show.

What’s the general vibe on the album?

Actually this edition has a darker, more underground feel to it compared with 'Summer 2009'. That's largely down to the tunage that was submitted for consideration in that period. A lot of the good stuff was edgy and moody!

How did you go about selecting the tracklisting? What was the selection process like?

I always request possible material from my favourite producers and also had a good selection of music signed to my Lange Recordings label to choose from. There's 7 Lange rec tracks including my latest single 'under pressure'. I got sent a huge amount of music so narrowing it down was tough.

What is your personal favourite track(s) off the album and why?

I like both of the CDs intro tracks a lot. I've been caning 'Gerry cueto - restart' in the clubs and I think CD2s starter called 'Atem Niblz – Magic Valley' is a real gem. Not something I'd play in the clubs in a typical set, but certainly on the radio show as I like to play more diverse stuff. Other highlights would include the next release on lange recordings 'Deep Voices – Heart Of Glass (Ronski Speed Remix)' and the Robert Burian remix of 'spark' by DJ Preach.

How’s everything going with your radio show?

It has just hit episode 40 and the listenership and feedback just keeps on growing, especially after launching the show as a podcast. Its online home is still exclusively with Afterhours.fm and its also broadcast on an increasing number of local FM stations worldwide. I'm happy with the format, it seems to work well and twice a month keeps me busy enough!

Do you have any festival plans this year?

I have a few festival dates over the summer including tomorrowland in Belgium. I can't announce any others just yet. Off to play cream @ amnesia in ibiza for the first time this summer too, really looking forward to that!

Your new artist album is on the way!! Can you tell us anything about that?

I've overrun a bit with my original schedule but it is nearly finished and will be out mid to late June. Like my first album I seem to have written the best tracks last (Out of the Sky' was the last track written for 'Better Late Than Never'). I can sneak out a little information on the new album. There's a new track with Sarah Howells on it, and the first single, coming out just before the album drops, is a track called 'Live Forever' featuring the vocal talents of Emma Hewitt.

Have you road tested any of your new material from it yet? If so what’s the reaction been like?

Yes, I've been testing the new tracks and tweaking where needed! So far reactions have been great and I've been asked what some of them are a few times which is always a good sign. I'm giving 'Live Forever' its 'radio debut' on ASOT 450 this weekend.

What toys / gadgets do you always take whilst travelling the world to starve off boredom?

I couldn't live without my laptop for doing mixes/edits, keeping on top of business stuff, and watching DVDs. Also my blackberry is now essential. Reading material-wise, I have to say I'm a bit of a nerd and always carry a copy of New Scientist magazine!

What one track would you save if your house were on fire?

Bloody good question. OK, if it had to be one of mine I'd say 'sureal - you take my breath away' but only because when I bought my house the royalties from that early hit helped with the deposit!! It's only fair I save that track.

Who or what attracted you to start a career as a DJ? Did you ever envisage the success you have had?

My career started as a bedroom music producer in a small town with no EDM scene. I was lucky to get my break. Right music, right time! The DJing came a bit later...it seemed a logical progression for me as my music was getting played all over the place.

No, I never envisaged making a long-living career out of music. I still feel very lucky to be doing what I do.

Is there a venue left in the world that you’d like to play in? If so why? What have you heard about it?

There's events like 'burning man' that look amazing to be part of. One of the places I've wanted to play for a long time is Amnesia, ibiza - this year its happening!

What else have you got coming up this year?

Once the album is out there will be a number of singles to follow throughout the year and I'm doing a supporting tour for the album from June until October. There are a few other project ideas in the pipeline, but its too early to speculate!

Any final messages you’d like to add…

Thanks for the support!
