Who’s who on the road with the Nukleuz South Africa tour

Reported by SunnyAli / Submitted 03-12-08 13:26

The holidays are just a few short weeks away and the UK’s biggest and sexiest trance record label Nukleuz is making sure the clubbing year ends in style as it takes the best of its trance on tour across South Africa – a never-been-done-before experience!

This December Nukleuz is taking its label manager, phenomenally successful producer P.H.A.T.T. – also known to locals as Namibia’s Pierre Pienaar – to hit two of South Africa’s biggest clubbing communities, Johannesburg and Durban, with its finest trance belters. The tour is all in aid of spreading the word about the new Nukleuz CD Trance Adrenaline which rounds up the label’s best releases of 2008 and will be the first opportunity for South African audiences to hear some of these tunes.

There’s more than just the headline act taking part in the tour, however, and anyone coming to these club nights in both cities will be supplied with the best new trance and UK hard dance from both South African and international DJs. Alongside Pierre the lineup includes representatives of Johannesburg’s biggest and best known trance club ESP; a very special guest from London, UK; the head honcho and all-out ruler of TRAXX in Durban’s hard floor; and a maverick hard dance specialist team from Johannesburg.

With less than a couple of weeks to go before Nukleuz takes to the road, I talked to each of the names on the tour to find out exactly what special festive treats they have in store for their dancefloors.....

TRAXX stalwart and clubbing genius Sam Boylan has been moving and shaking Durban’s nightlife since the days of Club 3-30 as well as touring across Europe and playing regularly at the UK’s biggest hard dance club Frantic. He’s played alongside many of the biggest international DJs visiting South Africa and is looking forward to opening for P.H.A.T.T. at TRAXX on 12 December: “It’s very important for us in South Africa to have international DJs play here. It’s great to hear someone different playing and no one is ever too good to learn from others. It also gives our patrons the opportunity to compare just how good our local talent is”.

Sam has presided over TRAXX’s hard floor as one of the most dedicated and best-loved South African DJ names, and has mixed some of the best-selling compilation dance CDs released across the country. He’s dedicated his DJ career to creating an uplifting clubbing experience: “I have always loved uplifting music whether it’s funky, techno, house, hard house or hard trance. I want to see people happy and having a good time and really letting go on the dance floor – that’s what clubbing should be about. Who wants to pay 100 Rand to go to a club and stand at a bar with an empty dance floor because the music is boring?”

He loves the hard dance genre and firmly believes in the power of interacting with the crowd on the dancefloor to gain the best response: “If people see the DJ enjoy themselves and put their heart into what they’re doing they will naturally follow,” he says. The power of a great set is all in the making, he adds: “I don't just play any track that gets released: there are thousands of tunes out there and only very few great tracks have the power to uplift the crowd and become – and stay – classics. It’s also about how you put the tracks together: there has to be a journey from beginning to end.” And having seen his sets keep the TRAXX dancefloor banging on until 9am, I know he’s more than qualified to warm clubbers up for a superb Nukleuz night.

Leading the Johannesburg leg is trance pro and leading ESP resident James G, one of South Africa’s best known DJs. Over his many years playing James has emerged as a natural leader shaping the scene in Joburg, and has developed a distinctive production style too that has seen his tracks released on Adam White’s Emalodic label and Armin Van Buuren’s Armada. His most recent effort has been to remix Pierre Pienaar’s track Titan – signed to Nukleuz and out now.

James knows how to please the South African clubber better than most and he says he’s seeing people becoming more and more up for new sounds on the dancefloor: The South African crowd has definitely caught up with the rest of the world as far as the latest music styles go. Not even two years ago we had to slowly nurse the crowds into new tracks and different sets. These days I can play something new every weekend. It’s a really healthy sign I believe!”

James has played alongside names like Armin van Buuren, Cosmic Gate and John 00 Fleming and has toured Europe with ESP. He admits he loves being on tour: “It is an unbelievable experience to travel half way across the world and find people who enjoy the same music you do back home.” He pushes his audiences to listen to new styles within the trance genre and draws from broad influences – even adding a splash of Michael Jackson to the odd intro. Watch out for his set, as he says it’s “anything goes” and he’s loving blending genres these days: “I’m really loving the fusion of styles these days. It gives us the chance to progress a much wider spectrum of sounds. The line between trance and house is getting thinner every week.”

Alongside the South African boys on both legs of the tour there’s also an extra special appearance from London-based DJ and producer Simon Qudos. He first visited South Africa in October to play at club Submission and loved it so much he’s making his way back again to join the Nukleuz tour: “My set at Submission for the Relentless U4RIA night rates as one of my favourite so far – I enjoyed it so much,” he says, “In fact, my whole experience of South Africa was awesome – I met some great people too so when the chance came to join the Renegade boys on the Nukleuz tour, there was no time needed to make the decision – the answer was yes!”

Simon’s signature style is bouncy, energetic, uplifting hard trance and he says he’s particularly relishing the Durban leg of the tour – “As I've heard some great things about both Traxx and the clubbers” – and says he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve for the two sets: “I've some new tunes to showcase as well as some remixes that won't have been heard before. On the night, I'll be giving away my production showcase mix CD - there will be one that is exclusive for the Durban gig, and another exclusive for the Johannesburg gig.”

Simon’s home stomping ground is London but he’s a keen traveller and has made it to Australia and Ibiza to play his sets as well as South Africa. 2008 has seen him develop his name as a producer, and he’s gaining more and more recognition for his work: “I've made it into the Trackitdown.net hard dance top 10 a few times and have had two positive reviews this year in i-DJ magazine (Forever Restless in the January issue and What Is The Future in the November issue) which I'm really pleased about.” Ultimately though he says he’s just glad to be hitting the right notes with the buyers of his tracks: “I continue to be humbled by the fans that are buying my tunes and sending such positive feedback.”

Last but not least is arguably Johannesburg’s most interesting three-piece DJ unit the Renegade DJs. The Renegades – namely Wezley J, DeeJayCee and Vinnie-V – play a blend of infectious bouncy hard dance with a helping of catchy accapellas and scratching added to the mix. They’ve performed in both Johannesburg and Durban since founding the group in 2007 and have developed a defining style and performance; as DeeJayCee says “I think the three of us together make quite the formidable team”. He says the Renegades are a meeting of minds and offer something different to the club scene – real passion and energy, superb mixing, and special turntablism touches to keep the crowd’s attention. “The Renegades give clubbers the entire entertainment package and then some. What can the clubbers expect on this tour? UTTER RECKLESS ABANDONMENT….RENEGADE STYLE!!”

Vinnie-V is also waiting to show clubbers on both legs of the tour just how much the Renegades add to the DJ performance: “Each member of the Renegades offers something exceptional, whether it’s a great collection of music, knowledge of the scene or technical abilities like accapella layering and scratching,” he adds. “All three of us are really hands-on behind the decks to put on a completely unique show.” He says they’re determined to push the boundaries of the hard dance and trance genres: “The main focus of our DJing is to bring a new approach to the hard dance scene and no one else is doing what we’ve made happen. I started out as a turntablist and it’s my personal mission to bring those battle scratching sounds into hard dance – the Renegades are the only place you’ll see DJing like this.”

Wezley J explains the Renegades are learning more about working together with each set they play – and he’s expecting the tour to be their best performance yet: “We’re finding every gig goes better and better and we’re definitely harmonising more fluently as a team – it’s great to see synergies emerging.” He’s expecting a lively night out on the two tour dates: “As far as special touches go, I always pride us on the energy and vibe we bring to the decks when we play. At our recent event playing alongside Simon Qudos in September, everything gelled really well together and it allowed us to bring the best possible performance on the night to the clubbers.”

With support like this, the Nukleuz tour promises a spectacular show with the very best of South African, British and Namibian style and talent behind the decks working their hardest to keep the crowds bouncing. After all, as DeeJayCee rightly says, “there’s nothing worse than a static DJ just going through the motions behind the decks – DJs should entertain their crowd and keep them on their toes!” We can’t wait.
