Completing our two part special on HeatUK. Promoter Damian Gelle turns the tables and questions Ian Betts the HeatUK resident. Want to know more? Come inside!
Damian Gelle: Right Mr Betts! In recent times you have become a father, congratulations on this new chapter to your life! Now the majority of the time I have known you as the HeatUK resident there was never a Mr Betts Jnr, how has fatherhood impacted on your life?
Ian Betts: It's been incredible. Oliver is 15 months old now and every day has been a new adventure. All the clichés you hear about becoming a parent are true - it does change your life, it does give you a whole new perspective on the things that are important and those that are not and you will never experience another love like it. It's also calmed me down a lot - I don't have the time to devote to all the facets of my life that I used to have, so some things have to give.
DG: The Ministry Of Sound just recently celebrated 17 years in operation and is truly a worldwide clubbing institution, now if I was a betting man I would back it to still be here for many years to come even with the recent fold of so many clubs. This is the way I see it...clubs come and go but dance music is here to stay and is everywhere more than ever before at present - what are your thoughts on this matter?
IB: I couldn't agree more. All forms of popular culture are in a continual state of evolution, be they films, music, writing, etc. Dance music is no different and the form it takes today is far removed from the form it took when I first took those formative steps into the subterranean world of Turnmills. Whilst some dance music genres are facing less popular times the moment, others are flourishing - I'm often reminded of a quote I read about this very subject some year ago, which was along the lines of "No matter what genres come and go, people will always like house and techno" and I think there is a large amount of truth in that statement.
DG: This year in June you once again played for Cream at Amnesia on the annual Ibizan Heat trip. I'm sure there are plenty of aspiring DJs and trance lovers who will be reading this - can you tell them what it was like to play an hour and a half set in the main room of one of the world's most acclaimed clubs then hand over to Ferry Corsten?
IB: Cream this year was without doubt the best one yet for me - I was lucky enough to play for almost two hours and by the time I handed over to Ferry the place was rammed and primed to go off (which it did!). It was the satisfaction of a job well done and an amazing reaction to the music I was playing which most people would not have associated with the style I’m probably best known for. The sound system in that place is right up there with the best in the world, and the view from the booth is as inspiring a sight for a DJ as you're ever likely to encounter. It was one of those nights where everything came together, and the buzz was incredible!
DG: The first time I booked you was for the T2 room at Turnmills for one of our events after hearing about your tour in Australia. I remember walking from the main room over to see your set and I couldn't move - the room was so packed it was almost hysteria in there.
There are four major elements I have admired in your sets:
a/ Accessibility
b/ Programming
c/ Energy and fun telegraphed throughout the performance
d/ Humbleness after playing
Tell me what works for you, and feel free to expand on any of the points I have mentioned or left out?
IB: I stumbled into DJing having been a dedicated clubber for many years and I will always remember what it feels like to be in the middle of that dancefloor having the time of your life – that for me is what is important about DJing. It is a soundtrack to someone's night out and the music you play can determine whether someone has a great night out or an ordinary night out. As a clubber there are many times I can remember leaving a venue disappointed with the DJs I'd seen, be it in terms of the music they'd played or their interaction with the crowd, so I simply try my best to ensure that no-one can say that of a time that I've been DJing (I'm not saying I've always succeeded mind you!). I try not to take things too seriously either, clubbing should be about having fun and meeting people - as a DJ you have to remember that you are not a god and despite what the song says you do not save people's lives.
DG: It must be a great buzz to hear producers like the caliber of van Dyk and Van Buuren playing your tracks out - what's the latest update with Ian Betts the producer?
IB: Things have been busy in the studio just recently. I've got a collaboration with Dab Stone that has just come out on Jon O'Bir and Activa's Conspiracy label, a remix of an old K90 anthem called Hyper Intelligence which is one of my favorite tracks and was an honour to work on. I've just worked on a remix with Ollie Leighs under our Ayana guise which I'm excited about and has been receiving some major label interest, and I've had an original track called False Gods signed to John Askew's mighty Discover label. Also keep an ear out for a remix of a track called Stream which should be out in the next month or two and finally one of the biggest tracks in my bag at the moment is a remix I've done of a Nick Rowland track called Sonnet Of A Sunlit Sky which will be coming out on the new Friendz Music label at the end of the year - it's epic! Besides that I'm working on 3 or 4 new originals as well as some ideas in different styles that I'm getting quite fired up about.
DG: This Friday night at the Ministry Of Sound you are closing for some remarkable trance talent like Marcel Woods and Markus Schultz. How does one prepare for such a job and can you give our audience a teaser of any classic tunes to expect?
IB: I never really 'prepare' for gigs as such, I just bring a wide ranging bag of CDs and see where the set takes me! There's obviously some new material from the studio that I'd like to sneak in if I can, but it will very much be a case of seeing what happens on the night. It would be rude not to slip in a couple of Heat anthems though.

My first ever set at Heat in T2 @ Turnmills, the first year at Cream in Ibiza warming up for Armin and obviously playing after PVD @ Koko.

"Beat Junkie" by Marcos or "The Message" by Cern
Best set you've witnessed at a HeatUK event?
Goldenscan in T2 at Turnmills, Daniel Bunter at Pacha, and any number of Marc French sets over the years.
Your largest HeatUK bar tab?
Well into three figures.
Favourite HeatUK flyer?
The party with Tilt, where you were dressed up as a US Army general!
