Getting Fakt with super electro producer Dom Kane!

For those who've not yet heard of the super talented Dom Kane, he is an electro DJ and producer who over the last two years has been carving quite a niche out for himself on dance floors worldwide. Hailed by I-DJ magazine as 'The years fastest rising ungerground talent' in 2007, he’s the owner of Xeton Records as well as a world renowned producer and remixer in his own right with releases on Erase, Fat!, Kismet, 852, Climax, Stranamente, Knob, 64, Randomize, Instinct, Ascension and now Fakt Recordings![/b]

Propelled into the big league by his remake of the Orbital classic Halcyon, Dom inserted his unique blend of electro house and 4/4 breaks to the track which gained plays from James Zabiela, Hernan Cattaneo, Sander Kleinenberg, Sasha, Matt Darey, Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren and the almighty Pete Tong on BBC Radio One's Essential Selection. Unlike a lot of remakes, this had support of both the Hartnoll brothers and a star was born! We caught up with Dom on the eve of the release of the Dom Kane EP on hot new digital imprint Fakt Recordings.



For those not yet acquainted with Dom Kane can you give us a brief description of who you are, where you’ve come from and where you’re going to?

Dom Kane: Well.... My name is Dom, I'm 26 years old, and I like to play with lots of gadgets with lots of knobs to twiddle that make loud noises. I was born in the jungle and brought up by a pack of wolves and would one day like to invent thought-controlled music production.

The last 18 months have seen you really shine, what moment stands out when you started to feel the benefits of all your hard work?

DK: I think my first big wake up call was hearing my own track being played by Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1. It was really unexpected if I’m honest, and I think that was one of the things that lead me to be offered a 4 month DJ tour of Eastern Europe. From then on it’s been a rollercoaster of a ride including various tracks on the radio and compilations, residencies at the two greatest clubs in the world - Ministry Of Sound London and Space Ibiza – and gigs world wide!



You regularly play in Russia, how is the scene over there?

DK: After the tour of Eastern Europe I’ve been back almost every month for the last 2 years now! The Russian dance scene is fantastic, it’s such a contrast of culture contained within one country and the Health & Safety laws are barely existent out there which means people can party like nutbags! It’s taken a decade for the people to realise they’re actually ‘free’ and it’s as though they’re making up for lost time in parties.

Have you travelled much more with your work?

DK: I’ve done a fair amount recently. In the past few months, I’ve been to Egypt, Amsterdam, France, Spain, Estonia, etc, and coming up over the next couple of months, I’m going to New York, Canada, Casablanca and of course Eastern Europe a few more times!

What’s your favourite gig to date and why?

DK: I think my maddest gig to date was probably last summer in Lipetsk, Russia. There's a few videos of this gig up on youtube and myspace etc, but what you can't see is that the 'club' is about 5 miles deep in a forest in the middle of nowhere, and is actually on wooden stilts about 5 metres off the ground, with only one wall behind the DJ and the roof held up by more stilts. Also what you can't see on the video is that there are a few more thousand people dancing outside in the forest and on the roof top and there are pyrotechnics firing off either side of me! Yes, pyrotechnics, in a big wooden structure, in a wooded forest, haha!

Name one country you’d like to DJ and why?

DK: There are still so many countries I intend on playing in to be honest. I’m hoping to tour the USA soon and I’d love to do the Far East too. I’m also really keen to visit Iceland as that’s where I hear Santa goes for the summer

Your release ‘Smoke Machine / Barion Genesis’ is forthcoming on Fakt Recordings, what’s the link up there?

DK: When Fakt first set up they released some absolute killer tracks and ever since then I’ve held the A&R guys hostage in my basement until they signed the contract to take on my EP amongst others. It took a while but I broke them down in the end!



You’ve got a barrage of remix work set to drop, what can we expect from you?

DK: I’ve really been working hard on trying to develop ‘my sound’ over the last six months and I’m really proud of the results. I’ve got remixes for Stealth, Benchmarc, Diverted, 1989, and Nuuf Music all coming out over the next few weeks to months. Although my style can often vary I try and make sure it has my signature sounds in there and this shows in all of them from the funky electro house of the Stealth remix , to the acid house sounds on 1980.

You’ve got your own digital imprint Xeton Records, how long has this been running and what’s your future plans?

DK: I actually set the label up in early 2006 (as did about 231654684652 other people at the same time!) as additional avenue of getting my productions out there. It’s been quite a slow and organic growth but I’ve never felt it should be any other way. I’m really happy with it at the moment. I’ve got some great signings coming up in 2008 with more of a focus on more consistent artists rather than a barrage of ‘the-sound-of-the-moment’ stuff. I’m also looking to set up a Xeton Records Compilation Series later this year, so watch this space!



You’re battling up through the ranks in the UK, what’s your advice to those just starting out?

DK: Consistency! It’s all well good producing a hit or putting together that killer set, but you need to be able to make it evolve with the industry. The only other thing I can say is just do whatever you think you’re going to enjoy. Again, it’s all well and good trying to make that number one hit, but if you don’t like it yourself, then how are you going to feel when 6 million people ask you to play it again and again and again?

You are a DJ and a Producer, which part of the equation is your favourite?

DK: If I’m honest I don’t think they can be separated for me. The DJing is the reward of all the hard work whether it be sifting through countless amounts of crap tunes out there to find the hidden gems or getting into the studio and making one yourself, it’s all done because at the end of it you get to tantalise a crowd of club-goers with them!

The music scene moving from vinyl to digital is a hot topic amongst DJs, producers and clubbers alike, what’s you’re take on the situation? Is it the end of dance music as we know it?

DK: I finally stopped playing (and releasing) vinyl last year and I can’t see me doing it again to be honest. But I seriously don’t think there IS an end to dance music as we know it. Sure, I love that old analogue feel and sound, but roll with it. On the DJing front, I like to think that it’s also about being an all round performer these days, which is why I do my 3-deck (CD) mixing and never leave for a gig without my FX unit.

On the production front, there are a lot of problems with piracy and we’re going the wrong way about it. Everyone keeps dropping the prices of everything and this only devalues the talent and leads the consumer to the impression that the artist has no financial gain and therefore it ‘must be ok to share!’Add a little bit more value to the music and people will want to keep hold of what they’ve spent their money on. I know then that would throw in countless other arguments, but that’s my basic opinion and it could also be why I’m not the head of EMI or Universal!

DJs who fly regularly are definitely contributing to global warming. What are your views of this and climate change as a whole?

DK: Contributing something like 0.01% of the global warming bonanza (although I’m pretty sure they didn’t call it a bonanza). Don’t get me wrong, I try to do my bit wherever possible, but until someone offers to peddle-boat me across the ocean I’m not sure there is much I can do. If I was a bigger name in club land then I know I would definitely try and make gigs into tours so that more time was spent in each country rather than jetting back and forth all the time.

What’s next for Dom Kane?

DK: Right now I’m putting together the first drafts of my debut artist album whilst also working on a couple of collaborations with Aquasky and Ricky Stone. I’m also working on a few other remixes and next week I go to Russia for a mini-tour before heading to New York and Vancouver, then back to London for my Inigo residency and then I might just get some sleep!
