Kym Ayres wises up at Freeformation

Reported by Kevin Energy / Submitted 10-12-07 16:03

Christmas. An occasion for some time off work (for most), some quality time with quality people, and, most importantly – some serious worry free partying! London will be home to a vast array of electric atmosphere’s this Christmas and one place where the temperature will be rising on the inside, as it drops outside will be the charismatic Hidden. As Kevin Energy and Sharkey’s Freeformation hosts a huge line-up over 3 rooms. Mr Kevin Energy himself took time out to catch up with the colourful Kym Ayres before their debut back to back hour of mayhem in the Elevate Hard Dance Zone.

KE: So Kym Kym Kym……

You certainly do manage to keep yourself busy both in and out the clubs. You’ve worked hard behind the scenes with Slinky Monday to Friday and you still manage to look totally refreshed and full of beans behind the decks on your weekend club jaunts. Are you a Super Woman or does it take its toll?

KA: I am actually super woman, I’ve been in films and everything!

On a more serious note though, if you want to know my secret, try eye bright eye drops. They make you look like you haven’t been up 26 hours straight!

How is the atmosphere in the Slinky office on a Monday morning?

It’s all good, I’m here on my own dipping rich tea biscuits into my tea (rock n roll baby) , having a conversation via text with Lisa Pin Up about stick on bras and trying to get cracking on to sort out the Slinky Boxing Day Match – Boys vs. Girls which you and I are in fact both playing at. How exciting!

Is playing for Slinky a different buzz knowing you’ve had a part in creating the hype and pulling in the people?

Yes, Slinky gigs are the best in the world ever. It’s always satisfying on the odd occasion when people actually dance to my sets but even more satisfying when you’ve helped put the events on too!

So, we only really properly met at the DJ Magazine awards party this year. Plenty of drinks were involved, some pretty questionable dancing and a lot of rather odd face pulling was involved. (as proved in published photo sets) I knew then you were a party girl and a possible victim for our ‘Wise Up Get Stupid’ campaign at Freeformation. Have you heard anything about this?

Yes because I just phoned you up and asked you about it… WISE UP AND GET STUPID YOU BORING F*CKERS!!!

So, having seen our amazing acting skills in our Freeformation ‘Jam Warz’ play, is there any glimmer of a chance we may see you appearing in our Christmas play ‘Scrooged’ which will be performed at the Freeformation Christmas Party ‘Rudolph’s Rehab’ this year?

Only if I can dress up as a banana.

Your DJ schedule is looking healthier all the time in a scene that is having some what of a struggle to be as fruitful as previous years. What secret weapons are you pulling out to keep your gigs rolling in?

Alec Mills… special DJ agent at S62! He is my pimp and gets me all my gigs. He’s a good lad bless him. I’ve been really lucky to get signed to Tidy/S62 as they are mega!

Do you think the punters are looking for fresh talent to push our scene to new heights?

I think there needs to be a balance of new and old. There’s some right good new talent pushing through like Frisky, the Tidy DJs, Rascal, Cally Gage etc but you still can’t beat a Tidy Boys set can you!!

You’re quite a performer as a DJ. On the Slinky stage at Westfest I seem to recall you playing a drum and bass track and running round the front of the decks to…well……brock out really! Personally I think that’s great behavior. What other antics have you done to really hype up a crowd?

I have been known to climb up on equipment or jump around on chairs before, still not quite worked up the guts to crowd surf yet! Knowing my luck everyone would move out the way and I’d land flat on my face, which would be no less than very embarrassing and possibly quite painful too.

I also seem to recall you mentioning to me something about playing somebody else’s hardcore tunes at the end of a night, when it wasn’t even your set anymore. Please enlighten us.

Ha ha ha, you make it sound really bad! I played at the pink rooms in Swindon and got nicely pissed on cocktails and I was talking to one of the DJs outside about hardcore so he got one of the DJs to put some on for me so I could have a phat rave and they ended up ferrying me back into the DJ box to play some ‘aaaardcore innit. Since then nothing has seemed fast enough!!

By the way, in completely unrelated news I watched ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 3’ last night on DVD and it’s well good. I went to see it at the cinema with Alice who I work with and we got pirate hats and ran around a lot shouting ‘ARRRR… SHIVER ME TIMBERS’ and it was so good that I had to get the DVD. I love Orlando Bloom. I just wanted to share that with you.

So what’s doing it for you music wise at the moment? Do you stick to tracks from certain producers? Are you branching our further a field from the UK for some beats?

I like a bit of everything and don’t like to stick to just one style. As you mentioned before about my d’n’b raving I love throwing random styles of music into my sets. It’s fun throwing something unexpected in and watching the crowd go off to it!!

Looking to the future of Kym Ayres, I know you are ready to branch out and take on new challenges. Have you made any plans to forward these challenges for 2008 yet? If not what avenues are you looking at or in a sense, what is your big goal?

To take over the world obviously. as some of you may know I’ve recently handed in my notice at Slinky to concentrate on my DJing and production so expect to see a lot more from my in ‘08. All this said I’m not closing the doors completely at Slinky and will still be a resident there and may even help out with some of the events. Slinky has finally gone back to the Opera House after a very eventful 2008 so I’d still like to be part of it as it’s a great brand. The world is my oyster at the moment and I’m hoping to stick my fingers into multiple pies. Speaking of pies I baked a sweet potato pie last night, it was well nice.

Well that’s enough questions from me right now. I’d like to offer a warm welcome to you for your debut set at Freeformation: Rudolphs Rehab. I’m really looking forward to our first back to back set and I know you’ll love our crowd as much as they will you. Seeing as it’s Christmas and we’re all a bunch of party people I’d like to challenge you. Let’s have a contest of who can mix in a Christmas carol in the best and most interesting way, are you up for it?

You know it baby, jingle my bells and pump up the Christmas jam baby!!

Thought so! Bring on the party. Wise Up…… Get Stupid!
