Family Groove presents London Techno City: snapshots from my first techno party

Reported by DJ Mythh / Submitted 10-01-07 22:33

I’d just like to start by saying that this was my first proper techno party ever and I had it on good authority that Family Groove at The Coronet on Saturday 4th November would be one of the best nights to start with. I was a bit dubious to start off with, but when we got in there and I saw there was some funky techno, breaks and the like on both floors and a drum'n'bass room on the top floor, as well as having The Coronet’s all famous balcony open, it looked like it was shaping up to be a good night...

But we won’t talk about d’n’b, because as an ex-drum’n’bass DJ my d’n’b days are over in all respects... or at least, until now I thought they most definitely were. However, I was surprised that I really liked the sound of a few tunes one particular DJ was playing: DJ Pink of Blackmarket Records. Not only was it good to see a woman DJ’ing, but a woman DJ’ing d’n’b is a rare thing indeed! Her unique spin on a sound I thought I’d given up for good really got me going, so who knows, in the future you might see me out at the occasional d’n’b rave. We will see what the future holds, but for now it’s all about psy trance and techno for me.

Back to The Coronet: on the second floor it was tech and breaks and a lot funkier than the main room, with more rythmic melodies. To be brutally honest I wasn’t too impressed with the second floor that much, but the occasional tune came on that I boogied too. Performing were a live debut act called R-ZAC who are Crystal Distortion and 69db, as well as another live act, Lxindamix. It was a good room to meet people, have a boogy, catch up with friends I haven’t seen in a while — you know, the usual stuff.

But I was really waiting for the likes of Bold at half one and Rush at three and the good old boys, the dynamic duo, Chris Liberator and D.A.V.E. the Drummer. In anticipation I ventured back down to the main room, which was now quite full. However there was some funky techno playing again which I learned isn’t really my thing, so me and my mate ventured around to find people and ended up on the balcony chilling out.

DJ Bold

Before I knew it, it was three o’clock and that’s when the fun really began. The music gradually got a lot harder and more and more people started venturing down to the main floor. This is where my new found love for techno started. The DJs were playing some real dirty, filthy, dark, disgusting real foot stomping on the ground techno and I got it on good authority that a lot of schranz was being pounded out of the excellent sound system. I heard many a techno lover saying was is the hardest techno they had heard in the UK for a long time — boy did DJ Rush pound it out, he was amazing.

DJ Rush

My mate Sebastian was going crazy over practically every tune, because while he has most of them, this was the first time he’d heard them played out, and now he’s heard DJs play them in this country he says has hope. I also mention this guy as I like his description of the reason why techno is better then psy trance: he says psy trance says, “Come and dance, come on dance”, and strokes you until you want to, and even when it’s hard, it’s still too nice. In comparison, techno slaps you around and says “Dance! Why aren’t you dancing? I’m going to slap you until you dance bitch…” He’s right, this music really forces you to dance, it’s got such force and power.

Being a techno virgin I had no idea what the names of the tracks were, but Sebastian assures me I was loving ‘Take My Advice’ by Felix Krocher, ‘Don't Laugh’, ‘Invisible Tunes’, ‘Schrott2’ and other tracks from the Cardiac Arrest label.

After the incredible rush that was Rush, it was going to take a very good DJ indeed to follow such an act. Fortunately we had not one but two heroes of the London techno scene to finish proceedings: Chris Liberator and D.A.V.E. The Drummer. Being a newbie to techno once again I can’t reel off a track list, but even I now recognise the classic that is ‘One Night in Hackney’, which had everyone smiling and dancing around like loonies despite the time of the morning.

All to soon it was coming to a close, but Chris Liberator had one more trick up his sleeve. I couldn’t quite believe it when I recognised the first few bars and the whole scene still makes me laugh. Grinning like mad, he finished the event with ‘We Are Family’ by Sister Sledge, and had us all singing along to what I now know is in fact the Family Groove theme tune.

DJ Rush

Family Groove is a definite must for both beginners of techno and long-term techno lovers alike. I would recommend it to anybody with any interest in techno or just wanting to have a good time at something a bit different… and trust me, it’s different!

Thank you Marco and his team for one of the best nights I’ve had in the six months since I’ve been back in London. I have now been converted to the ways of techno and will be found wandering the dancefloor at the next Family Groove party. See all you guys there for a great vibe with some more filthy music.

Agreed. Tekno & Psy are top of the pile for me, Tekno first and foremost. Still waiting to see DJ Rush on the decks, but i've heard recordings of him at I Heartbeat Techno and he was just banging it out relentlessly, awesome stuff.
Chris & Henry rocking as always, God i miss it all.
Wish i could've been there.

Cool little review too. Good to see some new comers lending their ears and broadening their musical spectrum to tekno as well Thumbs up
