Logic preview: Mike Redina spills the beans about the NRGFLOW crew

What do you get from a combination of music production, web designing, dj and photography agencies? Well, the result is www.nrgflow.co.uk, a website created to house the expertises of mates Michael Redina, Morgan Cameron, Remy Cameron (aka Reminiscence), John Coyle (aka JNRG) percussionist Joe Kelly (aka JK Theory) and web designer Paul McClenaghan.
This Saturday some of them are playing at Logic’s 7th Birthday: Morgan vs Reminiscence, whereas Mike will be spinning alongside JK Theory. The journalistic rules say that I should catch up with all of them. However, due to lack of time I spoke with NRGFLOW ‘spokesman’ Mr. Redina, who explained more about each one’s duties as well as their parallel projects, such as the Museum Of Techno.
First, and foremost, the classic question: when and where did you start DJ’ing?
It all started back in ‘96 when my good friend Morgan Cameron and I first started going to some of the underground parties in London. This was our first real exposure to the club scene and we were both blown away by the magic and atmosphere that the djs managed to create. It was soon after this that we decided to go halves on a pair of decks and start mixing. We started playing at a lot of house parties and small promotions around London. Having gained lots of experience and improving on my techniques I then went to Brazil in 2001 and stayed there for over a year. It was there that I first started to play out properly in the club scene.
What’s your background regarding music influences?
Firstly I have always loved all types of music and have an appreciation for all styles. When it comes to DJ’ing over the years I have been influenced by many djs and artists including The Prodigy, Orbital, Underworld, Mauro Picotto, Ricky Effe, Valentino Kanzyani, Marco V, Tiefschwarz and Luke Dzierzek just to name a few.
What styles do you play? Which one do you enjoy most?
I don’t like to be pigeon-holed into one category or genre, but to answer the question and depending on the party, I suppose you could say I play tech house/electro and techno. It would be impossible to say which I enjoy the most as they all create their own special energy and atmosphere.
Who are the NRGFLOW crew? Who's in charge of it?
Morgan Cameron, Reminiscence, JK Theory, Paul McClenaghan, JNRG and myself are the heart of NRGFLOW. First and foremost we are a group of friends that share a mutual passion and we knew that with a combined effort we could create something really special. With skills including DJ’ing, music production, web design and photography we have always tried to bring the same level of professionalism and consistency to everything we do with each of us adding our own personal style to the mix.
NRGFLOW first started out as a website. We would feature interviews and reviews as well as promote ourselves. During this time some of our producers got tracks signed to other labels including Bonzai, Nukleuz, Redemption, Heavyweight and T-Records. This helped raise their profiles which in turn gave the whole group more exposure.
For our first few releases we took over Heavyweight Records and concentrated solely on the harder side of trance. These tracks all got positive feedback and helped us to take the plunge and set up our own label Nrgflow Records. After several 12” releases we decided that the best way to showcase the styles of the group would be to concentrate on digital format. This has allowed us to be more open minded with our approach and take a few risks.
Our 3 main djs are Morgan Cameron, Reminiscence and myself. Our sound now represents everything from electro house right up to tech trance and techno. The three of us have a great understanding of each other.
As mentioned above, NRGFLOW also incorporates a strong media element to its arsenal, offering web consultancy, professional photography and IPIX images. These were all services that we felt went hand in hand with the scene and were also some of our main interests outside of music.
With all talent being in house and our long term friendship it has allowed us to stay true to our goals and develop a mutual respect and understanding of each other. Having been created over 5 years ago it has been a slow and rocky road but the future is looking bright.
What's your position there?
At the moment my main responsibilities lie within DJ’ing, photography and bookings.
What's the Museum of Techno?
The Museum Of Techno is the brain child of producer and artist Dave Pape. Having had close links with NRGFLOW, Dave decided to create a website to showcase the wild and wacky world of techno and all its related subjects. With such scope and vision it would be impossible to sum up exactly what the Museum represents. So head over to www.museumoftechno.org to find out more. Have you dabbled in production? How many tracks have you done so far?
Being around so many producers and creative people it would have been impossible to stay away from the studio. Over the last few years I have linked up with several of the NRGFLOW producers and have had a release along side Dave Pape on Museum of Techno Records. I have been working closely with JK Theory on several techno projects and have some tracks ready for release on NRGFLOW over the coming months. Keep an eye on www.nrgflow.co.uk for further details.
You lived in Brazil for over a year. Why did you decide to head to the southern hemisphere?
I went to Brazil primarily for a month’s vacation back in 2001 as my sister was living there and I had a place to stay. I decided to take my record box with me in hope of getting a gig or two during my time there. To cut a long story short I ended up living there for a year and a half. It was during this time I met close friends and djs Vitor Lima & Philip A. In 2005 I returned to Brazil and was given the chance to join Water Republic DJ agency, which was a great honour as there are some great djs on their roster. This led to a 7 month tour around the whole country, taking me to some of the countries most beautiful clubs and tropical locations.
How are the gigs in Brazil? Can you recall any particular set you played?
For sure! For me the best gig I had in Brazil was at club D-Edge in Sao Paulo, I played there twice and it remains my favourite place to spin to this day. The lights, sound system and vibe really are something special. Other clubs that really deserve a mention include Manga Rosa and Lov.e. What was also special were the outdoor raves set in remote and truly magical parts of the country. Brazil offers an atmosphere like no other which has resulted in its recent comparison with Ibiza.
Back to London you've teamed up with Never Enough. How has it been playing at various rooms hosted by Never Enough Maria?
Maria is a brilliant promoter and friend, with her company Never Enough she has helped me and all the NRGFLOW crew allot over the past year. She knows how to put on a rocking night witch is a testament to her knowledge and experience in the club scene. Tell us more about your partnership with percussionist JK Theory. How did you guys come up with the idea of blending techno with live percussion?
Joe has been a professional drummer for many years and this is something that shines through in his productions. Having spent many hours in the studio it felt right to bring a live element into our sets. We are still actively developing this side of our act and are experimenting with new effects to bring a different edge to the show.
You're playing in the Ice Box at Logic's 7th Birthday. How do you feel to be going back to The Fridge after the police raid and all that problem?
This will actually be my second time back at the Fridge since it re-opened as I played for Innovate’s 2nd Birthday alongside good friend Eduardo Herrera a few weeks back. The Fridge has been an integral part of the London clubbing scene for many years and it would be a shame to see it close for good. I have always enjoyed my sets at The Fridge and this Saturday should be extra special with such a great line-up in both rooms. What do you do when you're not DJ’ing? I'm told you are a photographer as well . . .
Yes, that’s right. Having studied photography for 4 years it’s definitely my greatest passion after music. Along side Morgan Cameron I have been doing live event photography, fashion photography and more recently IPIX photography. What was the strangest thing you've taken a picture of?
That would be telling too much.
