Celebrating Spin's first birthday with Dan Andres

I was fortunate enough to meet Dan Andres at a crack on at Ben Kakoshke´s place after a gig @ BPM in Melbourne on one of my trips back to Oz a couple of years ago. He introduced himself and told me he was coming to London in a few months and was keen to break into the scene over here. I gave him my number and told him to get in touch when he arrived.
Not long after he landed, I got a call from him asking if I’d like to be one of his residents at his newly formed promotion Spin. Spin has been held on the 3rd Friday of the month at the 414 and is going from strength to strength as the word filters out that it is always full of happy havin it punters. With Spin celebrating its 1st birthday on Friday 21st July, I managed to catch up with the man in question to fire some questions at him to find out what keeps Spin spinning.
How long have you been mixing for and what got you into it in the first place?
I’ve been mixing for about 3 years now in the club scene, but started to mix about 5 years ago in 2001. Mixing for me was a progression I guess from my love of dance music, stemming back from the early 90s with heavy influences from groups such as Snap, Black Box and Quench. I started clubbing in 96 and as my passion for dance music grew and the music slowly changed it eventually led me to hard house. I then moved on to other styles of music, including hard dance and NRG.
When you arrived in London what were the main differences you noticed between the dance scene in Melbourne when compared to the London scene?
Stemming from Melbourne, I was used to a slight progression of music and music styles throughout the course of an event. In general, I’ve found hard dance club nights in Melbourne start off with slower chilled out tunes to kick the night off then as the night progresses the music intensifies building to a climax, at which point hard dance is unleashed. This kicks on till the end of the night.
Noticeable differences with some London events as opposed to Melbourne I’ve found to be in the structure and evolution of the night. Some events I’ve attended have played the same music style from start to finish. Dance styles are also visibly different, with particular note to the ‘Melbourne shuffle’, a local dance technique you really have to see for yourself.
Aside from this, I found in Melbourne your hard-pressed to find club nights showcasing big name djs. When they do it’s usually only one or two big names. But, that’s all you need in Melbourne to host a massive event. The thing I love about London is the place most big name djs and producers reside, and there are plenty of club nights around that give you the opportunity to go and see them play for a fraction of the price you pay back home.
You established Spin quite quickly after arriving in London; did you do much promoting in Oz?
The first event I promoted back home kicked off with a huge NYE 2003 gig at a club then called Club UK. I then went on to promote a weekly night at the same club called UK Hard and did so right up until the time I left Melbourne. I guess I subconsciously planted the concept for Spin at this time, so by the time I landed in London I was ready to roll with it.
Spin is held monthly at the legendary 414 venue in Brixton, what criteria did you use when selecting the venue to host your parties?
I wasn’t particularly familiar with the club scene in London when I arrived, so my initial objective was to find a venue that played similar styles of music on their nights of operation. I didn’t want a venue that was too big, as intimacy between the club goers and the djs has always been a highlight when I’ve been clubbing myself. I enjoy the up close and personal touch when going to see djs play. And I knew it would be in my favor to find a venue that had a good reputation in the scene and had been established for a while. After 3 or 4 weeks of research and networking I found Club 414.
When you started Spin it was a Friday night party (10pm–6am). You also now host Spin On (6–12midday), which is fast becoming an institution on the after party scene in Brixton. How do you cope with running a 12+ hour gig every month?
As Spin is pretty much run by myself and Dan Byrns AKA (Kip Sweeney), a 12 hour plus gig like this can get pretty tiring. We’re usually both there setting up before the gig and stay until closing time to pack up. But, we always look forward to the night ahead and enjoy each part of the process of putting a party together. The process for me is the most rewarding part of running a promotion, from booking the djs to the promoting and flyering for the event, with the best part being when the time comes to set up the venue and watch as the party starts to unfold into another night of banging tunes and organized madness.
This would all be much harder of course, without the help of the rest of the Spin crew and all the new people I meet each month who make it all the more enjoyable to put on another successful night.
Have you found that the longer running times have increased your exposure to a larger audience?
Definitely. People who have come to our after party may not have been to Spin before and it’s been a good platform to cross promote and give the after party punters a taste of what Spin is all about.
What plans do you have for Spin for the future?
I want Spin to keep the underground vibe it has and to keep on giving punters something different by regularly headlining djs who you don’t get to see play out that often in the London scene. I’m also keen to have a live set down at Spin in the near future by the likes of Weirdo &/or other up and coming producer djs. We’re also currently working on projects to host rooms at other hard dance events and to collaborate with other promotions to put together a different kind of party outside of the club environment.
You’ve been doing some production in the studio. Is this an area you want to concentrate on, and when can we expect some releases?
Quality time in the studio to lay out a new tune is always on my to do list. I haven’t done enough of it lately because my focus has been on getting a record label started for Spin. I’m happy to say that Spin has just recently teamed up with one of our residents Dan Dyson, and we’re proud to announce we’ll be starting up the label Spin Hard Recordings UK (don’t hold me to that name for the label, as we are yet to confirm) and will be ready for our first release later this year in mid September.
As for a release of my own, look out for our second release on Spin Hard.
