Polish Poison — introducing DJ Keen

Fact: if you are in a hard dance club in London, you are never more than 5 metres away from a Pole. A Polish person that is. Well OK, maybe I made that up, but there’s no denying that this party-loving race of peoples can’t get enough of London’s clubs, especially the harder ones.
It’s good to see then, that some of them are giving something back to the capital’s clubbing community by hosting some excellent parties, as well as djing in some of the best clubs around. DJ Keen is one of the Polish clubbing mafia and has been rocking clubs like Byte and Fuel on a regular basis as well as providing top notch dance music entertainment in the form of his own party — Poison.
Poison isn’t about big names and over-paid djs, or about making money. It’s about having a damn good party in a damn good venue, with an eclectic musical policy that attracts open minded, fun-loving people of all nationalities. In a scene where so many events have little difference between them, it’s refreshing to see a party which mixes things up a bit. DJ Keen is a very clued up guy who is very passionate about what he does. It’s back-to-basics clubbing and it’s just what is needed in the face of the increased commercialisation of the industry.
Where are you from originally then Mr Keen?
I am originally from Poland, from a little town just by the Baltic Sea, kind of like Brighton — a really cool place.
The Polish community in London seem to love their clubbing . . . is club culture in Poland as big as it is over here?
That’s true — they love dancing, clubbing and socialising with others. They are always up for it anywhere they go. I love that they are like that.
Anyway, in Poland clubbing is very popular and it’s getting bigger and bigger year after year. Right now I believe is a great moment to bring something harder in there . . . the rocking sound of the UK’s hard scene would get the clubbers on their knees, hehehe! I am sure about it.
How did you become familiar with clubbing and dance music while you were growing up?
It started when I was a teenager and I found out about Love Parade for the first time. Wow! I was amazed by the fact that so many people go from all over the world to have a great time together and to listen to their favourite djs. Absolutely amazing!
Something changed inside me after that and it was just waiting to explode and direct me to where I am now.
Do you think the internet has made a big difference for dance music fans globally?
Well, let’s switch off the internet and let`s try to organise a night in Brixton Academy . . . I think this would be a big challenge, wouldn’t it? There are many other ways of promoting and advertising, but the internet plays the main role in these days. That’s what I believe keeps the dance music industry running and growing, that’s what I believe made Ibiza famous, that’s how thousands of people find out where to go, who is playing and who Paul van Dyk or Tiesto is.
What are the authorities like when it comes to clubbing and alcohol licenses and so on? Are there as many rules and regulations as there are in the UK?
Our nation is pretty flexible in this point, as drinking is one of our traditions we are allowed to do so 24 hours per day, there’s no problem with buying drinks at all. If you run a business is up to you how long you want to keep it open or closed.
Is there a free party scene in Poland? And what about festivals and bigger-scale dance music events?
If you want to have an outdoor festival or any kind of outdoor party you need to ask the government for permission to do so. If it’s indoor you just need to have security, loud speakers and some maniacs djs . . .
Big festivals, let’s see . . . Creamfields, the very famous Mayday and a couple of times we’ve had our own Love Parade in Lodz too. There’s a great summer event on the beach called Sunrise, and Soundtropolis. That’s all I can remember right now.
How did you first get involved in the scene in London?
I came to London thinking that Love Parade was the world’s maximum. I was really keen to go and see what a clubbing night out in London was like. So I finally got to the Fridge on a Saturday night for the first time. As soon as I got in I stopped and closed my eyes, my world turned around, and I just said “And this is what I was looking for!” I loved it from the very first moment.
Week after I went there again and security did not let me in, I hated them! Someone saved my night and sent me to Frantic at the old Camden Palace — a great night again!
Do you think London is a friendly place generally? Did you find it easy to make new friends and become part of the clubbing scene?
I think London is a great place with many opportunities to do something good with your life. People are cool, there is great nightlife, and it is easy to make new friends etc. But to get into the clubbing scene as a foreign dj is a nightmare, which I think is a little bit funny in a huge city with so many nations in it. How can you be possibly be sure as a promoter, that a dj who is calling you today and you’ve sent him away, is not going to be a huge star in a couple of years time just because he is from Japan, Poland or Mexico?! I’ve been sent away from some places myself. I understand that it is a very competitive world but it kills you when want to share your vision of the sound with others and no one wants to give you a chance.
It’s a very polemic and delicate subject with many points of view — let’s avoid further talking about it ok?
How long have you been putting on parties for? Did you ever put on any in Poland?
I tried something myself at first, nothing spectacular. Then I met Chris and Mario who are my partners, and we officially started The Poison a year ago. Our birthday is coming soon — I can`t wait. As for Poland, as I come from the seaside we’ll try to organise a festival on the beach presenting UK’s hard house and hard trance, including some of our residents and hard scene big names. Til now we haven’t done any parties there so far, but we’ll get there I promise.
What’s the idea behind your night, Poison? It looks like an interesting mix of styles, something a bit different to most other London events.
It’s all about music! We are all poisoned by music, we all want the same thing. Let’s go under one roof and have fun, let’s see others having fun, let’s learn something about other people who like different styles. They are as cool as you, they just like a different BPMs, that’s all!
It’s working so far. I see people who are big house funs jumping into the hard room for one or two hours, getting mad and coming back to what they like most. The same goes other way around. It makes the night really rich musically — that’s why we do it as we do.
Who else helps you run the event?
Everyone involved really, starting from my partners Chris and Mario, our resident djs (great guys thank you all), we’ve got fantastic support from our close friends and everyone who comes to our parties. To be honest, our crowd are the ones who help most. Big thanks and respect for you guys!
You’ve got a Japanese vj on the night providing the visuals — do you think the visual element of the clubbing experience is overlooked sometimes?
It depends on the taste I think. There are no promoters, djs or vjs who would make everyone happy. There are always people who are going to complain and the ones who will say it was amazing. I think is a very interesting kind of art and I hope most of our clubbers will think the same thing. Let’s check this out! If you want make up your mind go to www.michiyuki.net

It’s a secret, I can’t tell you right now. Sorry!
What do you play when you are djing yourself and which djs have inspired you over the years?
I play hard house, hard trance and psy trance. When I play at The Poison nights I like to surprise our crowd a little bit so they would keep asking themselves, what is he going to play this time?
I like to build up my set starting from something lighter then going HarderFaster . . . I also like to mix up 2 or 3 styles of hard dance music, which can be very tricky, so I am very careful as some records just don’t match together. If you spend sometime searching and looking you can make a very interesting selection and bring it to life in a club. When I play for someone else I usually check the line up and try to pick up a good style for the night.
Apart from Polish and British people — which nationalities really know how to party?
The British know how to rock, no question about that. Polish are no different in this point. Hmmm, all of Eastern Europe really know how to party really. One more country who are always up for it and they deserve the top score are Brazilians for sure. No offence everyone to anyone, else we just don’t know you’re as good as some others just yet!
