Brothers of Woo intervwoo

Reported by Tiernan O'Neill / Submitted 15-03-06 17:51

The dance music scene always looks for new talent, a shining light that entertains crowds, lifts people's spirits and takes them to a higher place. Well here's a duo that does that in spades. Meet Darz and Warb… rival football fans, one supporting Everton, the other Liverpool, joined together through the medium that is house music, they are the Brothers of Woo.

But are they any good you ask? Well between them separately they’ve clocked up an enormous amount of work in the UK’s finest clubs and beyond, playing at venues and nights such as Heaven, Wildchild, Frantic, Heat, Brixton Academy, Liverpool Academy, Ministry of Sound, The Egg, Turnmills, Passion in Coalville, Judgement Sundays in Ibiza... the list goes on!

The newly formed duo are soon gonna be rocking a dance floor near you. Playing the finest house music from funky uplifting wooing tunes right through to tough and driving beats to electro and tech house and anything else in between. If it rocks the party, they’ll play it. They aim to please but don’t play cheese! Bring it on!

Amazingly, whilst only forming less than a month ago they’ve just rocked the socks off three London gigs this weekend gone… busy chaps I hear ya say! Yes indeedy!

I caught up with the North-West duo for a chat. I wasn’t disappointed! Not only talented as DJs, they also seem extremely adept at keeping the party going and at propping the bar up! You won’t be disappointed if you drop down and see these guys over the coming months out and about at the various gigs they’ll be playing, so make no excuses and prepare to check them out and boogie till your heart’s content.

Tell us a bit about yourselves guys. How long have you known one another? And how long have you been djing?

Darz: We’ve known each other for about four years. Warb was promoting a night in St Helen’s near Liverpool and through email he booked me. I turned up and Warb said he was expecting some big Russian bloke to walk in, what with a name like Darz, I think he was a bit disappointed! I’ve been djing for five years.

Warb: One of the things that came from that night was the fact that St Helen’s just wasn't ready for a night like that and another was Darz, and even though not Russian, I liked what he was all about, so we stayed in touch ever since (well, to be honest I couldn't get rid of him). I've been djing around about 7 years now, getting my 1st set of decks initially just to take samples from old records to throw onto the sampler to play around with, inspired by the likes of Orbital and The Chemical Brothers, spending all of my time and money on music and learning to mix shortly followed.

Why the Brothers of Woo? Is there a story attached to the name? It’s not the most conventional name but it’s got a strange spooky feel to it… Dr.Who eat your heart out!

Darz: Haha. It’s all about having a good time behind the decks, Wooing the crowd up, and I got my inspiration for this from Simon ‘Dogzilla’ Patterson. His interaction with the crowd is immense and it all comes from the simple word — ‘woo’. A while ago I said to Warb jokingly, “we’re the Brothers of Woo,” and around a month back I just thought, fuck it, let’s DJ back to back and call ourselves the Brothers of Woo!

Warb: Yeh we're all about having fun, having a good time, nothing too serious, I like to think the name gets that across.

What kinda stuff can we expect to hear from you guys in a club? And do you tend to play differently separately?

Darz: I play driving and tougher house. I’ll leave it to Warb to tell you what kinda stuff he plays. The Brothers of Woo will play anything that rocks the crowd, there’s no musical snobbery, whatever we like and blows the roof off the club, we’ll play it. Damn right party tunes all the way baby! Anything so long as there’s woo and interaction with the crowd, which is what we’re all about!!

Warb: I play slightly deeper more electro stuff when I DJ on my own, more subtle stuff, and can be a bit picky. As part of the Disko Ticklerz I play slightly harder/darker more techy things. The Brothers Of Woo gives me the chance to play absolutely anything that's gonna work on the floor, more fun stuff with a lot more energy and woo to it.

What’s the aim of the Brothers of Woo? And where would you wanna end up, i.e. your ideal lifestyle?

Darz: We want to be playing anywhere and everywhere with a top up for it crowd. Whether that means in the main room of a club, all over the world, at festivals, or in some dingy back room above a pub, it’s all good. It’s all about bringing your music to as many people as possible. We want to share our enthwoosiam with everybody!! Ideal lifestyle? Traveling the world djing with a different girl each night!! We can all dream…

Warb: I second that, not the girl bit, I do it purely for the love of music. I want to be djing every weekend, doing what I love, instead of not being able to sleep thinking about it.

Quality! So have you got any special memories from clubbing over the years you’d like to share? And any funny or embarrassing moment that’s happened to you at some point in your life?

Darz: I think we embarrass ourselves nearly every week! Friday at the Cook we played our set 11–3, and then carried on playing through till past midday at the afterparty. I drank half a bottle of tequila and passed out at Gary’s (the Cook promoter) flat in Islington, and then he cut a big fuck off chunk out of my hair cos he said he’s never seen a white man with an afro! Then we woke up and went out and did it all again on Saturday in Brixton and at Twist. So many other top clubbing memories all rolled into one from the early days at Cream, traveling all over the country clubbing with my mates, Ibiza on numerous occasions, it’s all good.

Warb: Haha yes this last wookend was a belter, Darz was a mess, I wasn't much better myself! There was also a bit of a mishap in The End which left us both out in the cold one weekend. I'll never forget the time we were making the trip from Liverpool to Coventry to catch Radio Soulwax when just outside of Birmingham the car blows up leaving us stranded on the motorway watching our tickets go up in a ball of flames with the car... gutting. I've also got great memories of Cream, watching Yousef in the Annexe. Seeing The Chemical Brothers Live for the 1st time was a moment to remember that I won't ever forget too. There's still plenty more special moments ahead I'm sure, bring it on.

Top answer! Alright, this one is usually a DJ’s favourite question. Whats your favourite DJ? Producer? Track of all time?

Darz: Fave track is a techno tune DJ Elite — ‘That Fuct Camera’, it’s bootleg of ‘Green Velvet’. Every time I’ve seen Jules, Halliwell or Fergie play it in a club it’s had the best reaction to a record I’ve ever heard. My favourite DJs at the moment are ones that aren’t just simply playing one track after another but doing something completely different and innovative. 2ManyDJs epitomize this. There’s also a few guys called Eclectic Method, a group of VJs, similar to 2ManyDJs but in video format. They are about to blow up sometime soon so check them out!! I’ll leave it with them at the moment cos I think Warb is about to name hundreds…

Warb: I hate these questions, they are far too hard. DJ-wise I would of gone with 2ManyDJ's too, or James Zabiela, for their sheer experimentalism. I've seen far too many DJs who have played pretty much the same set every time I've seen them, they must get bored. I like to see something different every time, I want a surprise, and most importantly I want to see them really enjoying themselves. Producer, this is where it starts to get hard, I appreciate so many. Track? All time? That’s impossible man, maybe something by any of these, The Chems, Orbital, Underworld, Radiohead, Ian Brown, depending on the mood.

So how did the Brothers of Woo idea come around? And have you guys known each other long?

Darz: As I said earlier, about four years. I’ve been Djing on my own, and so has Warb, along with him being part of a group called the Disko Ticklerz. The Brothers of Woo are a side project, as we’ll still be partaking in our separate shenanigans aswell. Warb is desperate to DJ at all the top parties I’ve already played, and his excitement is unrivalled. He lives and breathes dance music like myself, and I want to see him given the chance. He introduces me to new music all the time. He’s onto tunes well before anyone else, even before Tongy!

Warb: Now there's a statement! I do love new music, new stuff new stuff new stuff, I sometimes think I might have a problem, it's like food for me, it keeps me going, I want to share all this new stuff with everyone.

Many people have conflicting views on where the dance scene is heading and where it’s at now. What’s your opinion on the scene right now and what do you think the future holds for it?

Darz: I think to make it as a top DJ you’ve got to be doing something different these days, as I mentioned earlier with 2ManyDJs. Anything out of the ordinary is the way forward, and encompassing all the new methods of technology is vital. People will always want to go out and dance each weekend so I think there’s no worries on this music ever dying, it’s as healthy, if not healthier, in terms of the quality of music at least than it’s ever been. Onwards and upwards in my opinion, rock on!!

Warb: Yeh I'm really excited about it right now, it's looking good, there's a hell of a lot of new stuff out there at the moment, really great stuff! It's overwhelming, dance music is evolving, as it always does, new sounds, new technology, the digital age is upon us, and it's looking pretty damn hot!!

Ibiza 2006. Do you have any plans to get out there this summer to party, DJ and experience the atmosphere? Do you think Ibiza’s improving or slowly losing its title as the world’s greatest clubbing spot, or is this just trash wrote by some snot nosed journalists who've never even been to Ibiza?

Darz: It’s exactly that mate — trash!! How can these journalists write about Ibiza if they’ve never been! Ibiza IS the party capital of the world, with so many different nights, different people and cultures from all over the world! Compare that to the other ‘party’ destinations around Europe such as Megaruff or Ayia Napa where all you’ll find is beer boys in Union Jack shorts spewing their guts up. I’ll defo be over on the White Isle this summer.

Warb: Oh yes! See you there!! Was also hoping to make it to Miami, maybe next year?

Well I know where you guys stand on that one! This question is for Darz. I played the backroom at Judgement Sundays in Ibiza last summer. The atmosphere was immense to say the least! How did you think your gig went back in 2004 and what was the atmosphere like? I also understand a certain top DJ was dancing to your set and do you hope to get back?

Darz: It was awesome mate, the best gig of my career so far without question. To have Jules and Eddie Halliwell in the DJ box with me, and in particular Eddie up on the speakers dancing to my set was out of this world. It’s nights like this which make all the hard work worthwhile, and believe me, there’s loads of hard work in being a DJ. It’s not all about just turning up with a bag of records. The amount of homework, for example sending cds out, networking, speaking with clubbers/djs/promoters, keeping on top of every single tune out there, reading magazines/books/message boards, producing, it’s all there, but I love every single minute of it. I was meant to play at Judgement Sunday in 05 but unfortunately had to cancel due to illness. Here’s hoping Jules will have me back this year…

This question is for Warb. I understand your part of the production duo the Disko Ticklerz. Have you any upcoming tracks your working on and how have your past tracks done so far?

Warb: Reactions to our current tracks have been great, they have been used many a time as weapons in Ticklerz sets and have gone down an absolute treat. We managed to slip 3 tracks in at our last gig and the floor went absolutely nuts to all of them! We haven't been able to get into the studio together recently unfortunately so there's nothing Ticklerz-wise on the go at the moment, but I'm sure there will be something just around the corner.

My final question…why are The Brothers of Woo a force to be reckoned with? What do you bring to the party that no-one else has?

Darz: We’re totally immersed in dance music, it’s our lives, 24/7 music is on our minds. We’re 100% determined to succeed and rock every single party that will have us. Djing is all about energy, and of that we have plenty in abundance. What do we bring to the party? We bring the WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Warb: Love it!!!

[b]Well fellas, it’s been an absolute pleasure chatting to you and I want to wish you all the best of luck in whatever you want to do and I sincerely hope you do well. Anything you’d like to add?

Darz: HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLO!

Warb: Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

Well there you have it people. I think the interview says it all. They’re down to earth, they have a positive attitude with a passion for music and talent that some headliners lack. There will be many future faces in dance music in years to come, and I’m pretty sure these two will be among them if they continue to stick to their guns and keep doing what they love! And I really hope they do!
