She’s the leading lady of DTPM — meet Lisa German!

If you haven’t heard of Lisa German then you ain’t been going to the right clubs. She was a vital ingredient of Gatecrasher, ex resident of Trade and current main floor resident at Sunday’s most infamous outing — DTPM. The story of her rise to fame is fairly typical, she was a bedroom DJ for years, made ‘tapes’, then eventually came her first gig! She’s been making waves as a producer too. Originally from the North and still bearing that all too familiar accent, Lisa now lives in Brighton having left the big smoke to get married. I pinned down Lisa at DTPM, just after she’d finished her set.
Well well well Ms German, it’s been a while, and aren’t you looking good? How you been and what’s been happening?
Haha! Why thank you! I’ve been stupidly busy for the last year. It’s been a great year dj-wise though which I’m really thankful for. I also started college in September three days a week which has been great so far but damn knackering! I'm training to be a radiographer which is a bit mad, don't you think?
Lisa at Fabric
Errrrr, what's a radiographer??? Tell us about DTPM, how did it all kick off? You’ve gone from Room 2 to Room 1, you must been happy, and if my memory serves me correctly, you are the first girl to get a residency in room 1 since Smokin’ Jo?
Moving to Room 1 and knowing I was only the second girl in there after Smokin’ Jo was very daunting. I was shaking on my first night. No-one could come near me. Everyone thought I'd lost the plot.... ha ha! I’ve settled down a bit now though and am enjoying it massively.
Did the transition from Room 2 to Room 1 mean you had to go out and buy a load of music?
The transition was hard at first. It took me a while to know what to do. I always try and figure out what the crowd wants... not me. My style was changing anyway and gravitating towards funkier stuff, but I did have to spend rather a lot of money the first few weeks.
How did the Heaven gigs come about?
Heaven is a very important gig to me. I can play a really eclectic set there and go back to some of the tougher stuff that I love. Gavin Nichols asked me to do a set and it worked out really well so they asked me back... and fortunately kept asking me... God love ’em!
How would you describe your style of favoured style of music?
That’s a hard question... I love so much. I love uplifting chunky funky stuff but then there are times when I need to just get downright dirty. Isn’t it the same for everyone? It’s all about moods I guess.
I remember your enthusiasm from when we both worked at Trade? It doesn’t appear anything has changed? What keeps the momentum going?
I still hear tracks that make the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. That’s all the momentum I need.
You’re one those rare breed of DJS who doesn’t appear to have a whiff of ‘stardom’ about them. What keeps your feet firmly on the ground?
He he he! I think I like to stay in the background a bit that’s all. I’ve always believed that the music was more important than what I was wearing. I’m not very big on demanding or attracting attention so that’s kept me grounded. Also, my really good friends keep me in check.
DTPM is 13 next year. What are your first memories of the club and what is it about DTPM that makes it such a dead cert each Sunday?
It’s great isn't it! 13 years is a bit special. My first memory was being introduced to Lee back in the days of Villa Stefano. I just loved it. It felt naughty then, getting trashed on a Sunday then missing work Monday cos you were still dancing somewhere. Everyone at DT works so hard and works together to make it a great night. And the quality of music in each room is amazing. There’s nowhere like it really is there! The one thing that is so apparent is that anyone from any walk of life can go to DTPM and not worry about sexuality, colour or what not. It’s just a great space! What more can I say.
We hear you got married? Tell us more about it, and what made you move out of London to Brighton?
Yes... I tied the knot on a beach in Sydney last year. It was a great day with just a few close friends. I’ve been with Jo five years now. God knows how she puts up with me and my mad lifestyle. Then again, she’s not completely sane herself either... ha ha! We laugh a lot... it always helps. I think moving to Brighton was important for us both. I couldn’t sustain my work and the madness that is London anymore. The two are just not compatible. Being by the sea is great for relaxing a little.
Your roots take you back to Bolton, and can I just say the accent is infectious. How often do you go back there?
I was brought up in Bolton. I used to go to school with Peter Kay you know... honestly! My parents are still there as well. I try to go back at least once every 3 months. I’m going up on the 28th to see Family German and to watch Bolton Wanderers play at the Reebok with my dad.
What are you up to in the studio, you got anything cooking?
Studio work’s on hold at the moment. I’m just too busy. I’ve got a lot of ideas though which I’ll be talking to Mr Ballard about.... That’s Justin. We’re hoping to do some work together soon. I’d like to do an EP with him. I just have to wait for Summer when college finishes.
You played at DTPM on New Year’s Day, which was undoubtedly one of the clubs biggest events of the year — how was it?
NY day was just HUGE, and you’re right... along with the birthday, it really is so damn special! I really wanted to play a great set that night, and hopefully did. I spent so much time searching out new stuff to mix with the classics, which is half what NYD is about! It was so much fun I can’t quite put it into words. Needless to say I stayed behind afterwards and didn’t leave till...
Lisa, thanks very much for your time, have a great 2006 and we look forward to seeing you and hearing you throughout!
No, thank you! It’s great to be asked by HarderFaster, have a great New Year!
