You can keep your Tiestos, your van Buurens, your van Dyks (your vans in general in fact) — when it comes to the all-time greatest trance producers, no-one could possibly top Ferry Corsten. During the golden age of trance music hardly a week went by when we weren’t treated to another of his immense, heartfelt productions under monikers such as Gouryella, Moonman, Veracocha, Pulp Victim, Starparty, and System F. It’s pretty damn hard to fault any of his productions from the last 10 or so years. His DJing is also not to be sniffed at, with a tough-edged sound that blends the best of trance, techno, and electro to brilliant effect.
Ferry joins a world-beating line-up this New Year’s Eve at HeatUK’s knees-up at Brixton Academy in a rare occasion to catch one of the all-time trancemasters on London’s biggest stage. Brixton Academy hasn’t seen a massive amount of trance fill its rafters, and it’s sure to be an emotion-filled, intense set of epic, operatic proportions. With a new album on the way too, we’ve got a lot to look forward to from this humble Dutchman...
Hi Ferry! How’s things? What’s big in your world right now?
Things are great. Currently I’m very busy in the studio finishing my album. And I’m preparing for my Asian tour and NYE.
How much time do you get to spend in your home country, Holland? Are you still enjoying the globetrotting life or are you feeling that you would like to be more settled?
I still really enjoy travelling all over the world and see the club vibe in different nations. Lately, I’ve been a bit more in The Netherlands because I have to finish my album. It’s good to be home and sleep in your bed.
Who and what has influenced you recently? Musically or otherwise…
Not typically recently, but I’ve always been inspired by music from the eighties.
Which of your more recent productions have really stood out for you as favourites?
‘Fire’, my latest single. Out in stores in the UK the third week of January. I have used vocals of Simon LeBon (Duran Duran). I’m very proud of how this track turned out.
How do you feel your sound has progressed over the past 5 years?
I think I’ve managed to create an own unique sound. I believe people can hear when something is mine. My sound has gotten a lot grainier and dirtier than a few years ago. Something I emphasize with my latest party concept L.E.F. Those nights, I want to give the audience a pre-taste of my new album and my own recognisable sound.
Have you got to grips with any of the extra bits of DJ kit that are available? Or do you prefer to keep your sets straightforward?
I usually keep my sets pretty straight forward. I prefer to let the records speak. Sometimes I use the effects on the mixer itself.
Who really impressed you in 2005? Producers, DJs, actors, anyone…
Sander van Doorn has really made an impression on me this year. Great productions… very tight and driving.
This New Year’s Eve sees you playing at Brixton Academy for HeatUK… have you ever had the pleasure of playing at this enormous concert hall before?
No, I’ve never been there before. But I’ve seen pictures. It looks very nice. And I’ve been in Turnmills a lot before. I enjoy playing there very much. It’s an amazing atmosphere. And always a great audience!
What do you know of Heat? Which other UK promotions do you know well?
I know it’s the biggest NYE party in London. I’ve played a lot in the UK for the past years so I know a lot of UK promotions.
Which countries do you think do New Year’s Eve particularly well?
I would say countries with ‘landmark’ cities like Australia/Sydney, US/New York and UK/London etc… ast year, I was in San Francisco and it was a madhouse. Americans really know how to party with NYE. But in the UK people go crazy.
At what point in the New Year do you tend to stop partying? January 2nd? 3rd?!
Hahaha! Don’t know actually… but I think at least until January 1 since I’m playing in Newcastle on Jan 1.
What would you like to achieve or change about yourself in 2006?
Tough question… I want to finish my album. That’s what I definitely want to achieve. I don’t think I want to change anything about myself. Can’t think of anything…
Brixton Academy is generally more famous as a rock gig venue. Have you DJed in many other such legendary non-club venues?
Yes, I’ve DJed in many non-club venues before. I’ve DJed in nature reserves, at some beaches, rock venues, all kinds of places actually.
