Perth’s finest Abs cranks up the Volume

Things are now in full swing down at London’s newest club Hidden, with several top-draw events rocking the venue every weekend. Saturday 17th December sees Volume return for a second installment of fun-filled house, breaks and electro frolics, featuring amongst others this fine Australian DJ who goes by the name of Abs. A name that’s been knocking around the London scene for years, Abs has gone from his hard dance roots to being a full-time house DJ so to speak. So what happened?
Gigs for F, Kurruption, Heat and NastyDirtySexMusic amongst others this year suggest that he’s made the transition from hard to house pretty damn well, and by the way things are going for him at the moment, you are bound to cross paths with his dirty house sounds if you are anything resembling a party animal.
Being so near to Xmas and all, and being the official HeatUK Payback Party afterparty (as such), Volume vs Kurruption is set to be a pretty hedonistic affair. And if you are looking for somewhere to go when the music stops... Abs might know a thing or two about keeping the party going...
Where does the name Abs come from?
Well I’d love to say it is due to my ripped 12 pack, but there is only a 6 pack hidden below the shirt.
It has been a nickname since I was younger, an abbreviation somehow from my real name Aaron Baskerville which incidentally will be the name I am DJing under come 2006.
You came over to the UK from Australia about 6 years ago… had you already been bitten by the clubbing bug before you got here or was London responsible for turning you into a party animal?!
Ha, I gather you haven’t been to Perth. No it was definitely London that got me into the scene. My first time clubbing was Escape from Samsara at the Fridge. What a party that was … the lights, the sound, the bongo players, it was crazy, with an atmosphere that left you wanting more, so this became a bit of a regular haunt along with Freedom at Bagley’s and Provocation at the office… before I knew it I was submerged into the scene and lovin’ it.
How do you find the standard of living in London compared to back home?
London has a lot to offer that Perth doesn’t. I certainly think Australia has a better standard of living, but hey I’ll worry about that when I’m older.
London has so much to offer that Perth doesn’t. I love the social aspect of London and continually meeting and expanding the circle of friends. Obviously the nightlife/club scene has a lot more to offer as well with opportunities everywhere, providing you are willing to work for them.
Who did you know when you moved here? Were there already a lot of your mates in town or did you have to make the effort to go out and meet new people?
I knew nobody in London when I got here. It’s actually one of the things I like most about this city is meeting new people. You know back home, all my friends are still my school friends and they’re very cliquey and never allow new people into the group. Here, you can meet someone one week and within weeks there just part of the gang.
So, are you the same Abs as mentioned in Phil Reynolds’ track from a while ago ‘Cracking On (Back To Abs’)’?
Yep that’s me. Every week after an event, we’d all be out the front of the venue and someone would say where you going now? It was generally Phil saying “Cracking On Back to Abs!” and so the name of a tune was born.
It was as common as hearing the ‘in’ tune being played 5 times a night… only it lasted 18 months. Funny story, we had a promoter there one day and he decided to flyer my toilet. I think some of the girls were quite thankful, as we’d run out of toilet paper, although I heard the gloss finish didn’t help matters.
What was your first gig in London as a DJ? How long did it take before you were getting some really decent sets?
I first started playing hard house and my first gig out in London was playing for Frenzied at Platform 1. I thought I was over ready, I get in the DJ box after climbing a 4-meter ladder and find there was no monitor or light. I had to use my lighter to see what was happening. I was so nervous I couldn’t put the needle on the record…. I don’t know how but the promoter re-booked me to play his next event … last set!
Getting bigger gigs really depends on how hard you’re willing to work. In the past I have just sent out a demo and hoped people would book me from that, however I have realised that it is about getting out and meeting promoters, supporting events and persevering.
My first big gig came about a year after playing out.
So, you used to play hard house yet now play house — what happened?
This was the music I was initially introduced to when I first started clubbing, but over time found myself more into the house rooms at events. The harder music started getting real hard and I thought it was time for a change.
I have only started playing house out in clubs this year and absolutely loving it as house can be so diverse. “It’s all about the house!”
Which sets stick out in your mind as your proudest moments from over the years?
There are loads but definitely Heat NYE at Brixton Academy, the warm up set for Fergie on the Voyage cruise and I’m hoping my set at NastyDirtySexMusic at Ministry of Sound Dec 10th is going to be memorable.
December 17th will see you playing for Volume vs Kurruption down at Hidden in Vauxhall…what can we expect to hear from you? Sell yourself Abs!
Er… music. Well I’m not sure of my set time yet so will all depend on that, but in the bag will be driving house, pumping house, dirty twisted electro beats plus a few surprises. Definitely looking forward to playing at Hidden for the first time
Why do you think that Vauxhall has become such a centre for underground clubbing in London?
Simple — some great venues and great parties.
Is there anyone else on the line-up you will be spending some time grooving to?
You’ll find me busting a move to most the DJs playing, however I am looking forward to seeing Tommy Four Seven play. Last time I saw him play he had the entire place dancing. Also looking forward to Alex Parson, quality DJ and all round nice guy and Mark Bowler.
What are the plans for 2006?
2006 is shaping up to be a big year. I’ve been made resident of a new house night called Sophisticated Dance, which is co-hosting the Baby Box at Ministry of Sound on Dec 10th, as well as hosting rooms at the Key and Canvas early next year. I’m also involved with a new fortnightly Sunday Session at The White House. The new afternoon/night is called PUSH and trust me it’s going to be Sunday decadence for those who live south of the river! X-Press 2 have been confirmed for the launch on January 15. Looking forward to kicking off the new year in style with the official Genesis afterparty, FT @ Volume on New Year’s Day too.
Any studio work planned?
Would love to get in the studio, just need to find someone that is willing to work with a beginner.
What was the last tune that made you sit up and take notice?
Tony Montana (a.k.a) Damian the promoter of HeatUK played his first set at The Fridge last Saturday night and dropped ‘Horn’ by Tom Slake. You can expect me dropping that somewhere soon…
