The last ever Trancegeneration @ The Soundshaft... reviewed

Whilst dance music is thriving, it is undeniably no longer the big, cynical, cyber business it once was, even in London. The determined clubber could easily go out every weekend, if not more often, especially if they were adept at ignoring their bank manager, but most retain an affection for a few promotions only. The clubbing community is also a small and warm one — the same smiling faces appear out of the crowds again and again, and go from familiar face to acquaintance to a real friend you throw your arms around when you run into them on the dance floor at 1.00 am. As such, when one such promotion where you’ve made a lot of those friends comes to an end, even a temporary one, the scene is set for much heartfelt reminiscing from girly types… i.e. me.
Last Friday saw the final Trancegeneration for a while, as its cosy home The Soundshaft is being redeveloped into yet another winebar. As if London doesn’t already have enough establishments where florid, loud-mouthed recruitment consultants gather to beat each other over the head with their personalised number plates. It’s been my favourite monthly promotion for some time now, although I’d like to think I can still be objective, and there have been some absolute blinders. To name just a few… Lange and Simon Patterson at Christmas 2004, Darren Tate and John ‘00’ Fleming for the Digital Sessions event, and Corderoy and Matt Hardwick the day after more than fifty people were killed in co-ordinated terrorist attacks across London.
All the familiar and friendly faces turned out for this one, and the atmosphere was as positive and feel-good as it’s ever been. Cuddly Graham Gold — mainstay of the scene — was calling the shots when we first got there, in typical bouncy fashion behind the decks. Quite sparse and techy at times, but very groovy and bass-driven. A great reaction from the crowd as well — lots of tapping of feet and having a little jig, even queuing by the bar. Fabulous track choice from Graham as well — Mike Foyle and Signalrunners’ lovely summer tune ‘Love Theme Dusk’, the sing-along ‘Without You’ from Dogzilla, and the M.O.R.P.H. remix of Andy Moor’s ‘Halcyon’. A ton of other good stuff too, but as my level of geekiness seems to fall by the day, they will have to remain nameless. I didn’t even notice whether Graham played his own blinding collaboration with psy trance DJ Tristan — ‘Silver and Gold’… but I bet he did.
Another old-school name was up next — Matt Darey, who went as pacey as you like right from the off. He can certainly toughen it up when he chooses, even if on other occasions he leans towards the electro house. Some big, tough tracks got played, including Marksun & Brian — ‘Nemo Itome’, Dogzilla’s remix of ‘Dark Side of the Moon’, and a respectful nod to the past with Energy 52’s ‘Café del Mar’. I, for one, welcome this tougher faster style of trance — keep that prog, fluffy stuff for your living room, out in a club we want tough, bass-driven, visceral monsters.
It was after this that things all got a bit confused… (must drink less, MUST drink less). In my defence though, some total random dressed up as — of all people — Judge Jules nipped in behind the decks instead of Ronski Speed… who was a tad tetchy, to say the least. The Trancegeneration security machine (for that read Ehren, Gary, and a couple of blokes in bomber jackets whose main function seems to be genial smiling) swung into action, and the bespectacled impostor was bundled off. Unauthenticated eyewitness accounts claim they later saw the guy outside with a black eye! It seems hard to imagine the mild mannered Ehren, Gary or TG security bloke giving him a slap, so it remains a mystery. WHAT WILL BE NEXT?!? Stealing racehorses? Bodies buried under the dancefloor? Diamond smuggling?!? Bags I have a starring role, whatever it is.
A lovely set from Ronski Speed then ensued — quite laidback to start off with, but well-timed. John O’Callaghan then went a bit techy and grindy for the lovely, fluffy TG punters. The lowslung beast that is ‘Advanced’ from Marcel Woods was a hit, but he did go fractionally too far down the gritty, minimalist route. To be fair though, by this stage, all everyone cared about was Gary Ramsden’s upcoming request set, which featured ‘Without You’ (again), Mirco de Govia’s glorious ‘Voller Sterne’ and even Grace’s ‘Not Over Yet’. It featured a lot more than this obviously, but this decrepit 28 year old (almost 29… Boxing Day… don’t forget) simply doesn’t function at six o’clock in the morning, so you’ll have to forgive me.
Musically it wasn’t the best Trancegeneration there’s ever been, but that’s not what it was about. It was about everyone who'd loved this promotion getting together, getting wobbly, and making the most of it. The place was packed, and anyone who’s seen how Gary, Ehren and Nigel have consistently lined up the big names in a club with a capacity of just 400, would have been delighted with the turn out. The house room is always a bit under-supported, sadly, but a hefty crowd did gather for a rendition of the Ghostbusters theme. Frankly, the Birdie song could have got played, and the smiley TG massive would have got up and danced. No other night has made me as consistently happy as this one, and many of us will be counting the days until Trancegeneration finds a new venue. A massive thanks and congratulations to the boys, and I’ll see you down the front wherever you next call home.
