Hypervixen gets ready for Cyberkitten Nu! filthy Sunday stomper

It’s less than a week to go until the UK’s fastest rising hard dance promotion CyberKitten returns home to Milton Keynes, this time as the ever inventive CK launches their Nu! Filthy Sunday Stomper! on November 20th @ the Rat & Parrot, MK. I thought I’d take some time to catch up with CK’s newest resident HyperVixen. Lynette Aspinall is as full of energy as her moniker suggests and it’s just that infectious energy that’s making people sit up and take notice. In London she has been seen gracing the decks for Frantic at such prestigious events as Hard House Academy, Timeless and soon for CyberKitten’s HardKiss at Frantic’s upcoming More @ SeOne. With some pretty hefty gigs under her belt, a CK residency sealed and a tune released with Barry Diston earlier in the year on his Fidget Label, I thought it was about time the world of Harderfaster was officially introduced to the HyperVixen!

I first met Lynette at an impromptu party held after CyberKitten last August in Milton Keynes. We’d been mixing a similar time and it was nice to compare notes and get to know each other as we had common friends. I had a bag of tunes with me but was still a bit nervous about playing out in front of people I didn’t know on decks I was unfamiliar with, particularly as the decks at the host’s house were shockingly bad and I’d learnt to mix on my beautiful brand new Technics 1200s. What struck me then about Lynette — as she rifled through my bag and set about banging some tunes out — was firstly her fearless attitude towards the setup, which was far from perfect, and secondly how natural she was behind the decks. Her confidence shone through even at that point, despite the ropey setup (which she managed on far better than I!) and I definitely went away from that party wishing I had that same confidence as her, something it took me a year longer to achieve. At that point in time I knew Lynette was destined for good things, so it’s given me great pleasure to see her starting to get the recognition she deserves on the circuit.
Lynette welcome to your first Harderfaster interview. Let’s start at the beginning, when did you first get bitten by the hard dance bug? Did you always want to be a dj?
Hey K8-e what a night the above was! You’ve pulled out a great memory for me. You were so supportive from the start. I’m sure you agree, when you haven’t been playing for too long having that kind of support around you is everything you need to make it happen, and believe me it makes you stronger, thanks babe!
Back to your question... I was into clubbing for quite a while before I really opened my eyes and knew I wanted to DJ. I started clubbing to hard house in 1999. Hardcore was actually the hard dance music that I listened to at home, thanks to my older brothers, I ventured all over the country with friends, up to places like Passion, Storm, Insomniacs and Nocturnal’s (the best after party clubs back then), then down to Camden Palace, Bagleys, and various Frantic events. We also went to festivals like Global Gathering, Glastonbury (what a 5 day of madness that was). It kind of hit me after a while, all this music, and no real control to listen to it how I wanted. So with the help of Steve Gillen, I got myself on the decks, and WOW! I’d have started sooner if I’d know how great it was going to be. I haven’t looked back since!
You’ve emerged in the scene through your focused development at CyberKitten, now fondly referred to by the crew as CK’s 100% home grown girl. Finally gaining your CyberKitten residency in August must have been a huge coup, tell us about your involvement with the mighty ‘kitten’?
In my books being offered a CK residency is one of my best achievements I’ve been a very dedicated supporter of CK since I first ventured into one of their parties in 2003. I remember turning up to the Rat & Parrot (now home of the Nu! CK Sunday Stomper) walking into an electric atmosphere, seeing all these mad clubbers dressed to the nines stomping their hearts out and thought, WOW now this is how a hard house party should be. Loads of clubbers bouncing around the place, in such a great vibe, which back then was hard to create in MK. I was infected with the CK bug instantly, in fact it inspired me to pop to my car and get dressed properly for the occasion, fluff an’ all! First off, I was invited to start dancing for CK by promoters Yojo and Col Davies. From initially working in that position for the promotion I had a chance to see how the whole amazing productions created. I was then given some fantastic opportunities to try out my new found DJing skills, happily, on one of the best crowds out there in hard house scene. Although I’m focused on my DJing, with the CK crowd, I still can’t stop myself getting on those famous podiums for a stomp!

Your first appearance for Frantic was on a CK tour hosting the Nu Breed Arena for Hard House Heaven. Those familiar with Frantic will have noticed your name creeping onto a few more line ups lately, not least of which is the impressive Hard House Academy and also the much-loved Timeless. How does it feel to be playing for arguably the biggest hard house promotion in the UK at such an early stage in your career? Any tips for other up and comings?
Working with CyberKitten opened a lot of great opportunities for me, Frantic has been one of the biggest. When CyberKitten was invited to host the Nu Breed arena at HHH and I was first booked to play, I was elated but also nervous. I’d been to a lot of great Frantic events, so knowing what the expectations were helped. I had amazing support from people around me, especially all of those connected to CK, friends, family and my of course my amazing boyfriend Steve Gillen. For this gig I had a want to show the London crowd how I work it, and that was a bigger need than I could have imagined. I played a lot more bounce then, something I will always be fond of, building a set to get people jumping was a lot of fun, and I loved every minute of it. My style is evolving and with future bookings I’ll be taking it a bit tougher than I have in the past, and really come out of myself. You learn something from each event you play. Every event I’ve played at Frantic, experiencing their crowd and following, has opened my eyes that little bit more to what the future events could hold. I intend on working my way up as much as I can. With my CK residency and CyberKitten opening doors such as the likes of Frantic, I’m finding my feet in what I want to achieve as a dj and I really can’t wait to see what the future brings.
My advice to others will always be, if you want something enough, just go and get it. Stick to your guns and make sure what you play is what YOU love — the rest will come naturally! And of course keep on working those decks.....
CyberKitten parties are well renowned for their creative production and attention to detail. CK’s promoter Yojo Davies is legend in this regard, in particular, her well orchestrated progression of the line ups. What is it like working with CK’s feline dynamo?
Feline Dynamo is exactly how I'd have described her. Yojo's drive for life and the hard house scene is inspirational. To date she’s produced 28 unique amazing parties and each one has truly been been a work art. The total show thoroughly planned out by Yojo, the décor, the costumes for the dancers, line ups fine tuned to perfection, and the weeks/months of planning. Most promotions have scores of hands working on the productions of parties that are this good. CK does have a dedicated team who put in 100% effort, contribute ideas and support CK's now established great reputation. It would be impossible to work without them. But if you go behind the scene it’s Yojo and her husband Col who are doing the hardest part of preparation for the night. And with all the marketing and promoting let alone the admin work! It’s hard to believe that even now that they still find the time to enjoy the parties as much as the rest of us. Yojo’s a truly strong women, with some serious skills, consistently sustaining a quality night and in particular supporting and developing the scene’s new talent. Let’s hope CyberKitten gets everything it rightly deserves!

For clubbers who haven’t had the chance to experience CK, what can they expect from the party that sets it apart from others?
CyberKitten offers a top selection of new DJs in the scene, the infamous Steve Gillen, Nasty Neil E, Lucy Fur, Barry Diston... CK concentrates on raw and what the crowd really wants. Each part of each party has a personal touch from the promoters, DJs and the clubbers themselves. CK WILL open eyes to what clubbing is really about - - - - 100% no attitude, all sexy fun from techy start all the way to a filthy finish.
What’s been your most memorable gig to date and why?
A great gig that was only recent would be Wildchild’s 3rd Birthday. CyberKitten was co-hosting in Arena 6. I was due to play solo, but plans changed and Cally Gage and I played b2b. It was a small room, and those that came along will know it was hot in there. But despite the inferno the DJs that played gave it some fantastic welly, including me and Cally. I got the chance to play a little tougher, it went down a treat and the crowd went mad! It was also an opportunity for me to try out some new tunage, while still popping in some classics (has to be done). The crowd in the room were so up for it, how they stayed stomping with the heat is beyond me, but it was such an amazing infectious atmosphere it was hard to leave, despite the amazing line up throught SEOne that night. It was great to hear Cally on the harder end of the scale, she was very courteous behind the decks, and I can honestly say one of the best b2b I've played, so I’m looking forward to a re-run.
So what can readers expect to hear when they see HyperVixen on the line-up?
I often play a very bouncy energetic style early on and don’t think I'll ever change that, but I’m experimenting with the harder end of the scale now, and loving it. So expect some pure dirty bass lines with some bouncy riffs enough to keep you stomping and dancing!

Earlier this year you found some time to get in the studio with Barry Diston and ‘Flatline’ was born. What spurred you into the studio and where did the inspiration for the track come from?
This was a pleasant surprise! Barry Diston was amazing to work with, this was my first time in the studio and he was great with explaining things and he put a lot of extra energy into the session. And what can I say, Flatline was released on Fidget Hard! Av it! I went in with a great interest to learn, it’s one thing playing music as a DJ but gaining an understanding of composition and how tracks are built, well I was blown away by the work involved and can‘t wait to get in there again. I have so many ideas I’d like to get out for all to hear.
Do you have anything more in the pipeline production-wise and if you could make a tune with any producer who would you chose?
I'm in the process of getting in some practice with production and will definitely be back in the studio soon. Will keep you posted on this one. I’d love to work with Riggsy. Will be on the case soon I hope!

Playing at a variety of events this year on tour with CyberKitten must have given you an opportunity to scope out new talent on the scene. Which DJs have made you sit up and pay attention this year?
This year for me has to be...
My fave is Steve Gillen (DJing and production), most will already know Steve’s pure talent, the new daddy in the scene for filth! Nasty Neil E for King of Hard Tech — pure rudeness! Lucy Fur, she needs no introduction on the scene from me but to me she’s Lady Latifa of some pure devil’s filth! Andy Rise, he’s impressed me with his awesome skills each and every time I've seen him play and loving his new cd! Definitely a guy to take notice of...
So what do you do to chill out?
Lots of madness with two great friends, Tina and Fred, Steve and I hang out with, which usually consists of lots of music, drinks, fun and frolics. To be honest with so much coming up I don’t have much time to chill and I wouldn’t have it any other way!
What’s in your CD player at the moment?
The new Vicious Circle CD along with Andy Rise’s & Tom Basquil's demo and Scissor Sisters will be found there somewhere... kidding!

This weekend you can find me at CyberKitten’s Nu! Filthy Sunday Stomper where I’ll be playing b2b for the first time with Lucy Fur. Next up is Frantic’s More for the Hard Girls/CyberKitten HardKiss in Arena 2. In December I’ll be playing Lucy Fur’s PINK on the 9th and on the 18th at CyberKitten’s X-Treme X-mas X-travanganza in MK. My first set for 2006 will be at Frantic’s Genesis on NYD.
