I don’t know if it’s just me, but it definitely seems that in the last few years the UK funky house production scene has really come into its own. It seems that a while back the vast majority of the stuff came from the US and continental Europe, but these days there seems to be a plethora of UK talent making waves across the world with their productions and DJ sets. People like Young Punx, Shapeshifters, Steve Mac... and the Hoxton Whores.
Under this guise, Gary Dedman and Kevin Andrews have garnered much acclaim and commercial success with their bold, uplifting funky house sound, which they have applied to vast amounts of remix work (see Dave McCullen, Faithless, Plastic Dreams, Danny Howells, Moloko, Todd Terry) as well as their own irresistible productions (collaborations with Jon Carter and Rob Tissera for starters). Their sound fuses classic funky house goodness with occasional electro influences and a faultless production sound that results in tight, crisp sounding tracks. Gigs all over the world in places like Ukraine, Australia, Dubai and France illustrates how popular these guys are right now.
But enough of hearing about them jetsetting around the world — they are the HOXTON Whores after all! It's with this in mind that I spoke with these dirty stop-outs, as they will be playing for the massive multi-arena house music fest that is Just The One at SeOne London on December 3rd. It’s a new concept for London house music events, and with DJs like these guys at the helm, it’s looking like it could be something really big...
We’ve been hearing a lot from you guys over the past 12 months. Has it only been in the last year or so that you have been really prominent or did the process start before then?
The Hoxton Whores have been around for a few years now but we have been making records and DJing for the last 15 years under various names.
How long after you started making music were you releasing tracks? What was your first release, and do you still rate it?
It was a cut-up of ‘Shiny Disco Balls’ by Who Da Funk?. It was going to be used as a remix for them but unfortunately politics got in the way. You can still hear the mix out in clubs to date though!
How would you describe the Hoxton Whores sound?
Tuff chunky dirty house with a party element.
Out of all your many productions, which hold a special place in your heart and why?
The track that is coming out soon on Manifesto, ‘Sunshine of my Love’. Getting Eric Clapton’s approval was an achievement alone!
What upcoming work have you guys got for us? What dance floor bombs are you going to be dropping on us soon?
Well we’ve been very busy on the remix front from Faithless to Goldie Lookin’ Chain... so look out for those!
Could we expect an artist album from you at any point?
I would like to think so, when the time is right.
Which house producers/remixers do you feel have pulled off successful artists albums? Do you find that many of them are quite run of the mill?
Dirty Vegas and the Bodyrockers seem to have pulled it off but I do think that most struggle with an album concept.
Does it feel daunting if you receive a track to remix and it’s already amazing? Or does that facilitate the process?
If it’s already a great track just being asked to do the mix is a great pleasure to us. We just try and do a remix that we can use in our DJ sets basically.
Hoxton is a very trendy, fashionable area of london. Do you see a lot of pretentiousness in that area? Do you still spend a lot of time there?
I seem to be here all week but I like to escape at the weekends before I end up having a mullet!
December 3rd sees you boys playing for Just the One at SeOne in London, a recent newcomer to the house music scene with a different attitude and ethos to the others. Do you think the capital is ready for such a large scale, multi-arena house music event?
Of course, London should be holding more of these events. I think recently London hasn’t been at its best. 10 years ago the world looked upon the London club scene with envious eyes. I’m not so sure they do now though, which is a shame.

Have you had any experiences in the SeOne before? If not, what have you heard about it?
We haven’t had the pleasure of playing there yet, but i have heard a lot about it. It’s given the house scene the underground feel that it deserves.
Are most house music niches filled suitably in the capital? Are there any styles or types of events that you feel are underprovided?
London caters for all types, you just need to know more about where to find them, as most events are rather underground
Which other producers do you admire? Have you taken tips from any of your peer’s vis-à-vis matters in the studio?
Mark Knight, Soul Avengers, Deep Dish and Steve Angello to name a few.
What have been some of the more outrageous parties you have been to over the years?
All the parties we have attended in Russia this year have been a real eye-opener, also an afterparty in Melborne, Austrailia which have been the highlights of this year.
And finally, why the name? Are you really filthy whores deep down inside?
