One half of the hard house legends Pants & Corset, Paul King headlines the hard dance room at Knowwhere this month. Paul’s been a major player in the industry for a long time now, collaborating with everyone from Tony De Vit to Lady Bianca over the years. He’s also appeared under more aliases than you could count, including F1, Trauma and Overload as well as the famous ‘Pants & Corset’ pairing with Chris B. In the time-honoured tradition of pre-party shenanigans, Stevie from Knowwhere asked Paul a few probing questions, and Paul came up with the answers….
So Paul, over a decade in the industry — production, DJing, world travel, fame, fortune and everything that goes with it. Do you see the ride still going strong in another ten years and where will it be heading?
I’m sure that wherever I’ll be in 10 years time I’ll still be involved in music. As for the direction of music, that’s hard enough to predict in a year’s time, let alone 10!!
Many DJs never quite make the leap to working full time in the industry. When you look back on your career so far, do you think there was any one point at which you decided, “ok, I really work in the music industry and might not ever have to get a ‘normal’ job”?
I’ve never had a ‘normal’ job since I started. I’ve pretty much worked full time in the studio, whether it be for myself or with other people. Although a lot of my time now is taken up with non-dance related projects.
Do you find the time to go clubbing as a punter rather than as ‘work’ and if so, where do you go when the opportunity arises?
I try not to. I spend most of my weekends in nightclubs, so if I do get a weekend off that’s really the last place I would go. On the occasions that I do, I would go to Beyond, Crash or DTPM.
In the past you’ve highlighted artists such as Vangelis, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode and Yazoo as influencing you musically at a young age. If you could work in collaboration with an artist from outside the usual dance field, who would it be and why?
I don’t think I could pick just one. If I had the choice I think I would choose Prince — the man is a genius, just the amount of work he can produce, and the dramatic change of style is amazing… Jean-Michel Jarre — for always pushing the boundaries of technology to their limit. His last 2 live shows in The Forbidden City (Beijing) and Gdansk Shipyards (Poland) were both written and performed in surround sound… Annie Lennox, her voice is stunning, and even better live!!!
What, outside of music do you feel passionate about?
Food!! lol
What part of the world do you consider ‘home’ and what draws you back there?
2 places…. Bournemouth (where I currently live,d it’s just such a cool place, very laid back, and the people are great!
Other than material you’ve worked on, what’s the greatest tune of all time for you, and what is so special about it?
Hard question!! I think it changes as I get older lol. There have been a few corkers over the past few years. Currently I would say Nimrod from the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar. It has so much passion and depth to it.
And your favourite tune you’ve had any involvement in?
Again, really hard. I wouldn’t like to pick one out of all the tunes. They all have something special in them, and on the rare occasions that I do listen back to some of my old stuff I tend to think, “how did I do that??!!” lol. I would say both the Trauma Trax projects have been the most enjoyable to work on, even if they were a nightmare to try and get everyone together!!
What’s been playing in your CD player/ipod etc recently?
I can only get half of my cd collection on my 60Gb ipod so I won’t go there. Currently in my car I have Lauren Hill — ‘The Mis-Education of…’, Goldfrapp — ‘Supernature’, Art of Noise — ‘The Seduction of Claude Debussy’, Depeche Mode — ‘Playing the Angel’, Madonna — ‘Confessions on a Dancefloor’, Hans Zimmer — ‘Gladiator Soundtrack’ and Royksopp — ‘The Understanding’.
And a few personal details….
Favourite food?
Chinese or sausage and mash!
Favourite drink?
Water or Jack Daniels straight up with a twist of lime.
Item of clothing you’d hate to be without?
Any of my Diesel or Energie jeans.
Worst habit?
Impatience.
Best quality?
Care and attention to detail, and technical ability.

You’re King of the World for the day, what’s the first thing you do?
Give everyone sausage and mash!!
And finally… shameless plug time, what do the next few months hold in the way of gigs, production and work generally?
I’m currently working on an orchestral score for a film. I have plans for another 6 track EP, like Trauma Trax but funky and deep house. I shall be mixing the new Toolbox album with Nik Denton. Trance Room
Headlining the Trance room on the night, and launching the release of his new album ‘Lower The Tone’ we have the legendary John Askew! Long time resident at one of London’s most long-standing happening parties, ‘Gallery’ and worldwide resident with Ministry of Sound, (which has led to the globe-trotting DJ playing in the past 3 years: North America, Canada, Australia, Russia, Brazil, Venezuela, Egypt, Eastern Europe, Sweden, Turkey, Cyprus, Malta, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, Greece, Scotland, Ireland, Poland &Wales!) John is truly a global force on the DJ circuit.
Alongside John in the Trance room Knowwhere is pleased to announce the appearance of German Trance masters, ALPHAZONE! These prolific DJ/Producers have been rocking the Trance world since the mid-nineties, and are a firm favourite with many Knowwhere regulars, this will be their first appearance for us, so a real treat is in store!
One half of Knowwhere’s Funky duo, Funk-a-tronic is of course the amazing Max-e-Groove, who will be returning to the Trance room for us this month. Always a massive hit with the KW crowd, Max-e is the man who just seems to come up with the awesome tunes nobody else has heard of yet, and get the crowds rocking from minute one!
Resident Anthony Dean finishes off the Trance fare on offer, guaranteeing the bouncy uplifting Knowwhere Trance as only he can.
Hard Dance Room
One half of the Hard House Legends ‘Pants & Corset’ Paul King headlines the Hard Dance room this month. Paul’s been a major player in the industry for a long time now, collaborating with everyone from Tony De Vit to Lady Bianca over the years, he’s also appeared under more aliases than you could count, including ‘F1’ ‘Trauma’ and ‘Overload’ as well as the famous ‘Pants & Corset’ pairing with Chris B.
Paul is joined by one of London’s favourite Hard DJs, James Lawson. If you’ve been to one of the big Hard Dance events in London in the last few years, there’s a good chance James has been on line-up at some point. Always a favourite with Hard crowds, he’s also been a prolific producer of tunes coming through on the Nukleuz label, as well as remixes through Tripoli Trax and Honeypot.
Next up in the Hard Dance room, we welcome Charlotte Birch to her first Knowwhere. Charlotte’s style has evolved somewhat since her first days DJing back in 1996. Her previous style of funky house, disco and old classics, was soon replaced by hard pumping dance. This style quickly impressed the major clubs and promoters, leading to gigs at Slinky and a residency at Sundissential. She has also toured the USA, Australia & New Zealand, as well as giving an impressive recent performance at Tidy Summer Camp.
Final DJ in the Hard Dance room this month is the legendary Simon The Fireman! Simon’s been on the London scene as long as most people can remember and has never disappointed, he plays it Hard, but with the bounce that keeps the floor rocking all night. XLR8, Frantic, SunnySideUp, The Fridge, Camden Palace, Hanover Grand, they’ve all been witness to Simon’s skills, now it’s HEAVENS turn!
Funky Room
Knowwhere’s Funky resident Lizzie Curious makes a welcome return this month, playing her first set for us at HEAVEN. Lizzie is joined once again by Helen Joyce who played an awesome set for us back at The Fridge earlier in the year.
The Funky room sees a first for us this month, when we welcome along two new faces to Knowwhere, DJ Georgeos and Ciaran McCarthy. Both residents from Brighton’s famous Honey Club, the guys are set to deliver the top quality Funk that has made them both hugely popular DJs on the south coast.
So loads to get your feet moving at Knowwhere this month, whatever your Dance preferences, make sure you come along on the 4th of November and….
