A HarderFaster first - interview with funky house DJ and producer Stonebridge

Reported by josie / Submitted 21-05-05 12:49

If you've not heard the huge funky house anthem ‘Put 'Em High’, where on the planet have you been? Locked in a box on the Outer Hebrides most likely, although even then the sheep were probably humming it. They're devils for big Ibiza tunes are sheep.

Swedish DJ and producer Stonebridge, aka Sten Hallstrom, hit the bigtime with his remixes of Robin S classic tracks ‘Show Me Love’ and ‘Love For Love’ in the early nineties. He began DJing, however, in 1983, and in 1986 founded Remixed Records - a label/DJ remix service to compete with UK-based DMC, and US-based Disconet and Hot Tracks.

His biggest tracks to date are ‘Take Me Away’ and 2003 Ibiza anthem ‘Put 'Em High’, reaching #9 and #6 in the Top 40 respectively. In the last twenty years, however, he has produced and remixed for some of the biggest names in contemporary music, including De La Soul, Rebel MC, Tatyana Ali, Enrique Iglesias, Todd Terry, and Lenny Kravitz. He DJs regularly throughout Europe and the US. His first artist album - ‘Can't Get Enough’ was released on Hed Kandi last summer.

Your new single is just out - ‘Freak On’ [featuring Ultra Nate], it’s remixed by Ferry Corsten… that seems a bit of a departure.

Not a departure, I’d rather call it a challenge. We’ve tried something different. He did a brilliant record called ’Rock Your Body Rock’, and Mark Doyle [Hed Kandi label boss] loved it… he played it at so many Hed Kandi parties. The remix was his idea, and I was a bit ’hmm isn’t that a trance guy? It has to be a house mix’. Ferry said ‘of course‘, he totally understood the track, and I think he did a really good job.

Is that you in the ‘Put ‘Em High’ video?

Yes, I like doing stuff like that! I don’t know whether I like that one or the ‘Freak On’ one more. I always get this serious look when I do videos though, I'm not a very good actor.

The album’s been out since August last year, what have the reviews been like?

It was a bit slow at the beginning, because with this kind of album people don’t really know what to say. It’s fairly song-based. I decided early on not to make an album reflecting my DJing style, I wanted it to work to listen to at home so it’s all vocals.

You’ve been DJing over 20 years now, how come you’re only just doing your first artist album?

I decided early on I didn’t want to do just any old thing with my name. I wanted to be careful. I did a few projects under other names but I never really did any Stonebridge records, although I didn’t have a plan or anything. And then I got the question from Hed Kandi - ‘do you want to do an album for us, just do your own thing’.

Were you happy how it turned out?

Very happy, and I think a lot of people are very impressed, because when I signed with Hed Kandi they were basically a compilation label with a few parties… and now they’ve grown into something quite big.

Ibiza 2003... ‘Put ‘Em High’… big tune. Did you have a suspicion that it was going to be so successful?

No, not at all. I thought it was an album track. I liked it but I thought it was a bit old fashioned… and it’s quite a girly track! That summer Mark played it in Ibiza and I was like ‘what are you playing this is great!’ I didn’t recognise the intro! And then people starting singing along. Then I realised, ok this might be quite big. I’m useless at picking singles though, I always leave that to other people!

Are you a big fan of Ibiza?

Yeah I really like it. I wasn’t there from the beginning, I went in 2002 for the first time and I was blown away… with the easy vibe, and the amount of good parties and how happy people are. They really come there to have a good time… and it's unique. People say Crete’s going to be the new Ibiza, or South America, but you can’t start a thing like that, it just happens.

Do you get into to it and party quite hard?

No I don’t have time for that. And you know how it is when you get older, it takes half a week to recover! I have a good time there, I relax, but I don’t go crazy.

Have you got many dates there this summer?

It's not totally finalised yet… it’s going to be very different and very interesting this year, I can say that much.

Are you working with any particular people?

That’s part of the secret that I can’t reveal at this stage!

Do you have any big summer tunes that you’ll be dropping out there?

I did a remix for the latest David Morales single, and I spent extra time on it because he’s a little bit of a legend. I was flattered that he came to me, so I really worked on that one. I played it last week in Egypt and it went down a storm. I think that one’s going to be really big. It’s called ‘Feels Good’.

Also you’re doing Dance Valley this summer, is that your first festival?

No I’ve done quite a few, but this is the biggest one, and it’s one of the big stages as well so it’ll be interesting to see a house DJ on with all the techno and trance people.

Are you looking forward to it?

Of course yeah! It's going to be a good day because I’m playing there in the afternoon and then flying to London to play The Cross with X-Press 2.

What would be your dream gig, or have you already played it?

There’s so many different clubs, like… Sankeys Soap in Manchester is a club I love - it's basically a soundsystem in a basement. That’s one type of gig, and then you have glamorous places like Ruby Skye in San Francisco.

You’ve worked with and remixed for so many big names… De La Soul, Masters At Work, Culture Beat, 2Pac, Atmoic Kitten... who’s been the biggest?

I think when Ultra Nate said yes to do ’Freak On’ that was a big thing, because I’ve respected her for a long time. I expected her to be difficult but she was really, really nice,

You’d worked with quite a lot of divas over the years. Have they all been lovely?

Hmm, in varying degrees! I worked with [Ms] Shawn Christopher and she basically spent the first day in the studio shopping. She turned up at five to seven, five minutes before the studio closed. But generally they’re quite nice, specially if they’ve been doing it for a while - they really work.

Is there anyone out there you’d like to work with?

Well I wish Madonna would record something decent, then I could remix it! That would be a challenge.

What about more dancey stuff?

That would be interesting. I have to say it’s loosening up, you can feel that the barriers are not massive any more between house and progressive and tribal and trance. I think it’s going to happen more and more that people will accept other forms.

Last question, for the benefit of all us hard house and trance bunnies… what’s so good about funky house?

First of all you can’t really call it funky house, because that’s been 'infected' now in this country. It’s a chav thing! So I don’t say I'm a funky house DJ anymore I'm a house DJ. Not all house is disco-based or sample-based, it can be quite pumping. Not quite as epic possibly as trance… but if you can get into it – I think you have to give it a chance – it really works in clubs. Come and see me play and find out.
