One for all and all for One – An interview with K.A.R.L. and Conrad of One Promotions.

Reported by Latex Zebra / Submitted 12-05-05 01:25

One Promotions have earned a massive amount of respect for their endeavours in day time clubbing in a very short space of time. From humble beginnings they now rock the Southside Bar each month with a whole host of DJ talent, both established and up and coming. Covering a variety of musical style they have the multi genre thing sewn up with trance, hard dance, funky house, breaks and more on offer on a monthly basis. I picked the brains of two of the team, K.A.R.L. and Conrad to find the secret of their success and more importantly what they plan to do in the future.

Who is involved in the promotion of One and how did you all meet. Were you all long time clubbers before you got the DJing/promotion bug?

Conrad: One is run by me, Karl and Charlie Veron, with help from a few essential crew members, Bella, Lorenzo, Anthony Sergeant from Mad records and a mate of ours, Dave. It was started back in 2003 by myself, James (a work colleague at the time) and DJ Neil R. I met Karl through one of our first residents, Danni Loraine. She convinced him to come down to the launch party and we got introduced. He liked what he saw and we liked what he said, and that he’d be able to help us achieve. Shortly after that James and Neil both decided that they didn’t have the time or the finances to be able to commit to One fully and we parted company.

Before One started I’d been clubbing for a number of years, being a weekly visitor to Freedom at Bagleys until its close, as well as places like Gatecrasher, and Peach. I started DJing about a year before we started One. We’d decided that the best way to break into the scene was to run a party of our own. We also felt we could offer something slightly different, something slightly less corporate than a lot of the promotions around at the time.

Conrad

Karl: I was all set to give up on clubbing (I'd got quite disillusioned with it) but went to the first One to support a friend (and get drunk). It wasn’t until a couple of months later when I had then got some decks that I had a conversation with Conrad about getting involved.

I had been clubbing for a number of years, going to promotions such as Sunny Side Up, Frantic, Twisted as well as travelling up and down the country to Gatecrasher (very often), GodsKitchen and Cream. I also worked in Cyprus for 2 years pr’ing for clubs such as Freedom, Cream and Miss Moneypenny’s. When I came back from my travels I worked at Cyberdog as Music Media Manager, throwing free pre-parties for Frantic and Sunny Side Up, amongst others.

You started in a variety of venues, including one converted public toilet, tell us a bit about the early days and how you moved to the Southside Bar?

Conrad: We did indeed start in an (ex)toilet! Public Life in Shoreditch saw the first One on Boxing Day 2003. We had a great turnout for the launch but the owner was in the process of selling the venue so we had to find somewhere else. We came across the Masque Bar on York way in Kings Cross which, at first, seemed ideal. After two months there we realised it wasn’t perfect and decided to look for somewhere else. Karl mentioned that he knew of a West End bar so we went to check it out, convinced the managers that we would be good for his bar and he let us loose on his system.

You started (as many parties do) with just friends playing, how did the move up to booking more established DJs come around?

Conrad: The first big name we had down was Dean Peters who was a good friend of Karl’s; that gave us a definite boost. After that, just going to parties and meeting people and generally getting the word around about the party meant that people were more willing to play for us.

Karl: I also think that once people realised we were the pre-party for Innovate it gave us a little bit more credibility.

Has there been a conscious choice to do day parties rather than night ones? How do you think the vibe differs between the two?

Conrad: There’s no denying that day parties and night time events are very different things. The plan has always been to start small and free while we build a solid following and then to move on to a larger, paid, night time event. That plan is still there and, when we feel we’re ready, we’ll do something bigger. We wouldn’t want to give up the monthly free party at the Southside Bar though. Regardless of how big things get we’d always want to be doing something intimate and free.

Karl: It’s a whole different ball game running a night time party and have seen over the years, lots of parties start up and then disappear, even though on paper they had great line-ups. With what we do, we know what our costs are, there’s not a great deal of competition running at exactly the same time as us, and we get the venue for free hire (you wouldn’t get that for a night time event).

K.A.R.L

Was it always your intention to have a two room venue so you could include the more funkier, electro based sounds?

We started in single room venues with the music moving from funky house through to hard trance in one room. When we moved to the Southside they only had decks downstairs, so we stuck with that. During the summer the bar bought a second pair of decks for the upstairs to allow us to have a dedicated funky room. This meant that we didn’t have such a steep progression of music; it allowed things to be more gradual.

What have you learnt over your year plus of promotion, any advice to budding promoters out there?

Conrad: I’ve learnt that it’s a lot of hard work and its very time consuming. You have to persevere with things; even when it seems fruitless. Not every party is going to be rammed and you have to accept that. It takes a long time to build a following. You have to have a huge amount of drive, passion and organisation. There’s a huge amount to do when putting on a party, even of the size of One, far more than I initially thought; I’m sure you know this as well! And an understanding partner doesn’t hurt either!

Karl: Be prepared for it to take over your life…It takes a lot of hard work and sometimes you think, is it worth it? (I still remember the quiet months last year). But stick with what you believe in, but also be aware of what is going on around you. Also try and offer something different. Why would people go to your party? I see too much of the same thing going on week in, week out.

As well as getting more established names along like Nicki S and Daegal Brain, you also do a lot for the scene by promoting new DJs, how do you find this new talent or do they come looking for you?

It’s a combination of things. We regularly get demos sent to us either directly from DJs or from other promoters or people that have found someone they think might be suitable for us. We frequently stick ads out for people to send demos in and we get handed them by people that have come to One (we like that). Also if we hear people play at other events, we’ll speak to them or if we hear about someone that we like the sound of, we’ll contact them for a CD. We’re always on the lookout for new people.

Now, onto the music. You pride yourself on musical progression throughout the day. Why do you think this is important and what are your feelings on parties that start as they mean to go on?

Conrad: We think that progressing well is probably the most important thing of One. Now I like my trance hard, but I know that we can’t start with that at 3 in the afternoon! We need to ease people into things and the best way to do that is with something more melodic and progressive. Also, we’re a warm-up for Innovate so when we kick off, people potentially have another 16 hours of clubbing to go, we don’t want them collapsing at 5 in the afternoon! (even though the Southside’s cocktails have a habit of making people do just that!). I’ve been a to a number of parties where the music either doesn’t progress or progress such a small amount it’s barely noticeable. You can’t deny there’s a market for that, some people want the same style of music for 8 hours straight, it’s not for me though, and I wouldn’t want to do that with One. I think a bit of variety works well. The aim is to move from progressive through to hard without people noticing a jump. When this happens you know you’ve got it right.

Karl: I’m from an era where you would hear various styles of music in one room across the night, and I think the fact that I used to go to the superclubs and hear the music progress from a proper warm-up through to peak time sets, it’s just what I want at a party that I am involved in.

K.A.R.L

A lot of parties these days seem to have trance and hard dance in the main room and house, breaks etc in the second room. Why do you think this is?

It’s to give people a bit of choice and a bit of variety. A lot of people like both trance and house so it makes sense. It also gives the people in the main room somewhere to escape to when they need to take a breather and the people in the funky room somewhere to go on to when they’re ready to step things up a level. We run the funky bar upstairs as it just seems more suited that way round. It creates a much more “entrance friendly” atmosphere.

Tell us a bit about yourselves individually as DJs?

Conrad: I’ve had decks for about three years, been playing out for about two and running One for just over a year. Musically, I started with trance but I quite enjoyed the harder sound, so good, euphoric, uplifting hard trance seemed to be perfect for me. Like Karl says though, I’ll change my style depending on the party, the venue and time. I don’t often play funky techno but it’s what was needed for Innovate, so it’s what we played.

Karl: I guess you would say my preference lies with trance although that falls into many genres. I was quite lucky last year when I started, that I found a style which wasn’t being played out a lot at the time. A lot of people were calling it filthy trance which was full of dirty bass lines and some electro type sounding stuff, which definitely helped me get a reputation for playing different. I also like to play some housier stuff and some techno in a set if I can as well. There’s nothing worse than playing a set of 10-15 records which all sound the same. Saying that, I will tailor my music for whatever party and time slot I have, so I can also play melodic uplifting trance or pumping euphoric trance.

Do you both have other styles you experiment with?

Conrad: I used to play funky house as well which I quite enjoyed and I’m getting quite into that whole tough, bass-line driven house sound that’s flying around at the moment. I wouldn’t expect to start hearing me play that out much just yet though, it’s expensive enough keeping up with one style of music!

Karl: I’m a real 80s fan so I love that whole Tomcraft, Steve Murano type stuff and recently played a set of all that type of stuff at 123 Anything Goes, which was great fun.

Following that, do you listen to anything else other than Dance Music?

Conrad: Opera.

Karl: It’s Girls Aloud all the way for me!

What are your goals as DJs and promoters?

Conrad: Fame, glory, money, women and fast cars.

Actually, I just want to run a successful party. I want to be a part of something that does something no-one else does. I want to run something that people come to for the music and the atmosphere and to leave after having had a lot of fun. The best feeling is when I’m downstairs in the Southside watching the place absolutely go off and thinking “we did that”. It just brings a huge smile to my face.

As a DJ I’d like things to continue the way they’re going and then I guess the next logical step would be to get into production, if I can find the time. That or artist or label management. Again, it’s a time thing.

A set at Zoology wouldn’t go amiss though.

Karl: I haven’t really thought of any goals as a DJ. I have only been playing for a year and a hell of a lot has happened in that year. I’ll just take it one step at a time. As a promoter, I’d like One to keep running as long as there’s demand for it, whether that be as a free party or if we progress to other things. And to play for Zoology of course (oh yeah, that’s coming soon). I wouldn’t mind playing back to back with that Latex Zebra chap, I’ve heard he’s not bad.

I seem to ask everyone this but it is relevant to anyone working in Dance music. What do you think of the current state of the scene and how could it be improved?

Conrad: It’s definitely a clubbers market at the moment. London alone is swamped with parties, some better than others. There’s a huge amount of variety around and you can pick and choose exactly what you want. If you fancy a progressive to gabber night in a 400 capacity venue, you can probably get it if you know where to look.

Musically I don’t think things are that bad. There’s a lot of crap being churned out, but then there always is and there always will be. But there’s also a lot of excellent stuff being released, right across the board. From house to techno, trance and hard dance. It pays to spend a bit of time searching through stuff to find the gems.

I think more variety in line-ups would help a little. You see the same DJs on the same line-ups all over London. Now I know they’re talented and popular which is why they get the bookings but throwing someone totally different into things every now and then wouldn’t hurt; someone that doesn’t necessarily play in London much, someone you can’t see every other week. It’s what we’d do if we had the money.

Karl: It’s definitely not as busy as it was say 5 years ago. People have grown up and moved on and the kids coming through were into different music. But the clubs are still busy which is good and there seems to be a resurgence of small parties again like in the late 90’s early 2000, which should keep the scene healthy for a while.

What I would like to see personally is more genres of music played in one room across the night and some of the bigger parties bring some different names into their line-ups, i.e. some top European DJs/producers or other UK DJs like John Askew, Gareth Emery and John O’Callaghan being introduced into the underground scene.

Would you like to work with any other parties at any other venues?

Conrad: This seems to be getting mentioned quite a lot at the moment!

It’s definitely something that we’ve thought about and something we’re sort of acting on. Every so often we get other parties, such as Kurruption and Comfortably Numb to host our funky bar.

As for working with a similar promotion in a different venue, I’d be up for doing it but it’d need some careful planning and a lot of thought. I wouldn’t want to do it for the sake of just doing a joint party. It’d need to be timed right, with the right promotions involved in the right venue. It’d also have to be something a bit special, something that would make it stand out from the regular parties the promotions involved have.

Karl: ha ha ha. There is one party which springs to mind which I think musically is on the same tip as us but we’ll have to chat privately Dan.

What plans have you got for the future that you can share with us?

Conrad: In May we’ll have been at the Southside for a year and so to celebrate our anniversary we’re putting together something very special. It’s a huge, huge line-up and I’m very excited. We’re still in the process of confirming people, it’s massive now but we’re not done yet! And we’re also hosting the Ice Box for Innovate that night so we get to carry the party on until 6am! We’re also going to carry on with our showcase series where we invite DJs down and give them a 2 hour, peak time slot to give them a chance to really show off their stuff and do something a little different. We’ve also got One in Ibiza with Heat in June which should be brilliant fun.

Karl: 2 hours of me in June as well.

What has been your favourite One so far?

Conrad: Without doubt it has to be New Years Eve. It was quite a big risk, taking that on and we got quite nervous about it in the couple of months leading up to it, but it went better than we could have hoped. The place was packed from about 9:30 onwards and people were loving it. My biggest fear was that people would walk away thinking that they could have had a better time somewhere else but the feedback we’ve had says anything but. It’s so nice to hear people saying that it was the best NYE they’d ever had. And playing the midnight slot was an amazing experience. I can’t wait to do it again this year, we’ve already booked it!

Karl: As above but also our January party. I think we got the progression of music spot on and every DJ who played just fed off of each other, and the atmosphere was electric. It was just amazing to see that in the Southside Bar.

Who do you admire in the scene?

Conrad: There’s a real mixture of people that I admire for different reasons. I’ve got a lot of admiration and respect for the whole host of new, young (in some cases, very young!) talent that’s coming through. Some of those guys and girls are really experimenting with new sounds and pushing things forwards.

But then I’ve also got a lot of respect for those that helped to build the scene up into what it is today. People that have been there from the start and have lifted things right up to the very high standard we get each and every weekend.

Karl: I respect anyone who contributes to the scene, whether they DJ, promote or produce. Too many people bitch and moan about things without realising the hard work that is involved.

If your clubbing stopped tomorrow what would you do for kicks instead?

Conrad: If there was no clubbing at all? Crikey, I’d have so much time.
I’d probably just sleep a lot more. Mmmm, sleep.

Karl: Detox……………

More: May sees One celebrating one year at the Southside Bar and, to celebrate this special achievement, we felt we had to have a bit of a party. And what a party we have for you this month.

Opening things up downstairs we’ve got the fantastic Si-125. A regular on the London club scene, especially with Heat, his unique blend of tough, driving house will get things grooving nicely along downstairs for our second guest, Lawrence Bucknell. Lawrence is no stranger to One but this is his first go in a warm up slot. Warm ups are always tricky but after seeing some fantastic early sets from him recently, not least of all for Friendz, we’re confident he’ll work things up nicely with some quality, melodic trance.

Moving things up a gear will be the first of the residents, K.A.R.L. Expect an hour of driving, euphoric, exceptionally danceable trance.

And then comes the first of our birthday presents. Billy Daniel Bunter has been around for a little while and is hugely respected across the UK and internationally. Having played since he was 15 at raves and moving from hardcore through nearly every other musical style, there’s no-one better placed to do a classic trance set. Expect those memories to come flooding back with an hour and a half of absolute stormers.

Bridging the gap from classic to hard trance is the second resident, Conrad. He’ll be upping the pace with some big room tough trance just in time for the second of our special guests.

Marc French needs no introduction. A resident DJ with Heat as well as having played at events ranging from The Cook in Acton to 10,000 people on Clapham Common for SW4, the guy knows how to work a crowd of any size. He’ll be closing this, his debut appearance at the Southside Bar, with some extra special tuneage.

And we haven’t forgotten about upstairs either.

Playing that all important first set is a One regular and Kurruptions leading lady, Zoelee. As talented at DJing as she is at promoting, she’s someone we can always rely on to get things going. Following on from here we welcome back Comfortably Numb’s regord. Versatile enough to play early or late (as he did for us in April, and he rocked it), this man has a record collection to die for and he’s not afraid to use it.

Our third resident and the first to play upstairs, Charlie Veron has the job of following that pair and build things up and he always does a supremely solid job.

Our next guest is Snake. Someone that’s got a huge amount of experience playing up from big parties like Riot and Oblivion down to smaller scale parties like Warped we’ve never seen him disappoint. Capable of playing “across the board hard dance” as well as “Sexy Funky Dirty House & Breaks” we’re pleased to have him down for his debut with us.

The last of our residents, Mad Records’ Anthony Sergeant will be rocking the upstairs bar as the sun goes down with a blend of filthy house, electro funk and dirty techno which always goes down a storm.

Next up is Frantic and Peach regular and Squelcher resident, Benz. He’ll be tearing things up in a filthy and dirty, broken way right in time for our closing guest, Proactive’s Alex Parsons. An extremely talented DJ and producer with an ear for a groove, whether it’s hard or housey, we know he’ll round things off nicely.

And it’s all free! We’ll be having the usual 2 for 1 cocktails before 7, free shots later on in the night, £3 for a double vodka and red bull all night as well as £3 for a pair of Stellas or Staropramens.

And, as it’s our anniversary, the party doesn’t end there!

At 11pm we’ll be rounding up the troops and heading down to Innovate at the Fridge where we’ll be hosting the Ice box from midnight until 6am. Charlie Veron, 2 Phunked Up, K.A.R.L., Conrad and DJ Peludo will be taking you on a journey from tough, tough house all the way through the hard, hard trance.

Combine that with the main room line-up of Andy Farley, Nick Sentience, Phil Reynolds, James Lawson, Simon Rutherford and Mike Harris B2B with Andy T and we think we’ve got something a little bit special.

Plus! We’ll be giving out concession passes at One that’ll get you into the fridge for only £10! That’s a saving of £8 on the door price.

We’ll see you at the Southside.

Wicked interview guys! It has been a pleasure playing for you. One is such a vibed up little party . . .always goes off . . . loads of friendly up-for-it people.

I'm looking forward to hearing you both at Innovate on the 21st!

Wow......thanks to everyone for their kind words. If it wasn't for you lot we wouldn't have a party. A massive thanks to every dj who has played for us and everyone who comes to party. You make One what it is, very special.

I've been really enjoying listen to Karl play everywhere I've heard him, its a rare thing to hear a DJ with a fresh sound but Karl does just that! Nice work mate Thumbs up

As Karl said, the party wouldn't be anything without everyone that comes along. Thanks for all your support over the past year and thank you all for your kind comments.

Hopefully we'll keep putting on parties you want to go to at least until our second anniversary.

For now though, bring on Saturday!
