Corrosive 7: Interview with Mandie Moore + Jonty from Clockwork Prism

We met Mandie and Jonty after a drunken night out at The Peel. It was one of those “want to carry on and nowhere to go” situations. A friend of ours, Ehren knew of a party near by and phoned to get an invite.
We turned up outside the office block where Mandie and Jonty had the large penthouse apartment, a perfect location for a party! We fought our way through the decor and people to introduce ourselves. That night a friendship was born which has led us all 100’s of miles around the country side, through derelict buildings, underground clubs, farms and fields all in the name of a good party!
Meeting the Clockwork Prism crew opened up the world of free festivals, squat parties and alternative clubbing to us, so it seems more than fitting we have them host our Psychedelic-Trance room at our biggest night yet CORROSIVE 7.
Clockwork Prism are well known to most clubbers for their heavy involvement with the original Drome parties as well as their highly regarded “chill out room” at Antiworld. But that’s merely scratching the surface, as you’ll soon see!
Mandie & Jonty
How would you describe ClockWork Prism and what you do to some one who has never heard of you?
Clockwork Prism are a group of DJs, artists, musicians and performers who put on parties in and around London, at various underground venues, and outdoor free parties.
The Prism crew are blessed with an abundance of creative talent and technical genius, and everyone has a specific and vital part to play in making our magic happen! We’ve learned to organize ourselves over time, and these days we plan each party in detail to get it right.
(Now would be a really good time to think of something clever to say about all the crew being essential cogs in a well-oiled wheel, but, alas…. I fear a home visit from the cheese police!)
Who is involved with Clockwork Prism and what are there roles?
Jonty
Resident DJ, who plays a wide range of music styles – powerful dark, tribal house, progressive psychedelic, lots of squelchy, acid sounds, breaks, beats, bass-lines, white labels and bootlegs! Jonty is also a sound engineer - his quality Nexo sound systems have become a much-loved Prism trademark. Oh, and his collection of cables and connectors is probably the largest in the world…..
Mandie Moore
Resident DJ, plays bouncy, booty-shakin’ tech-house, dubs, progressive and psychedelic stuff, that’s funky and percussive! Creator of pingy things, paints backdrops, makes décor and is responsible for all things that shimmer, twinkle, glow and sparkle at our parties.
Greg Prism
Resident DJ, plays psychedelic, chill-out, and various oddities which are impossible to categorize, but fun to hear! Sound engineer, and guru for all things PA related, and has created some of our most beautiful and original flyers.
Nautilus
Resident DJ, plays banging and full on psychedelic trance, and spacey, chilled-out dubby stuff. Our web master, he keeps the site updated, and the crew on our toes. Also designs wicked flyers- he is our hero!
Xtensa (AKA Green Al & Cath)
Green Al
Resident DJ, plays progressive psychedelic trance with wiggly bits, rumbles, organic sounds with guest appearance by a hippo-cool! Al plays Didgeridoo, and Jews harp, and is also in band ‘T23’. He is worth his weight in gold, he often does the work of ten men, always with a smile. Another hero!
Cath
Resident DJ, plays all things psychedelic, from melodic, dreamy, dubby, to full-on psy-trance -a true psychedelic web-spinner! Cath also plays bass in the live rock band T.H.C. We will miss Cath and Al when they emigrate to New Zealand.
Darren Baker
Resident DJ, plays hard, pounding psychedelic techno and trance, also jungle and D&B when he gets the chance! When we do our chillout rooms, he plays congas and bongos mighty fine. Also sings in live band THC, So far he is the only member of the crew to have had a pair of girls’ knickers thrown at him, Tom Jones-style, whilst on the decks!
Cath & Green Al (Xtensa) and Darren Baker

Norty
Resident DJ, plays progressive/ psychedelic, chuggy tracks, also full-on psy-trance.
He also has his own rig, built from scratch by his own fair hands, which rocks the Prism bar. He is a technical wizard, and party animal
Banana Dave
Resident DJ, Plays weird and wonderful music for our chill out parties, anything from reggae to Zorba the Greek He also makes amazing lights out of circuit boards.
We all met through an extended social network. Greg was given the opportunity in 2000 to do a room in a new, underground London club, The Drome. Clockwork Prism’s first official gig was to host the bar area for Dromezone at The Drome, with a funky, chunky chill-out, the first of many!
Clockwork Prism is a pretty abstract name - how did it come about?
My memory’s a bit vague as to its origins! If I remember rightly Greg chose the name cos it rolls off the tongue nicely, and hopefully makes you think of colours, reflecting light, and movement.
Clockwork Prism has a pretty impressive résumé, you run your own regular(ish) parties, host a room at Antiworld, have been involved in numerous free parties big and small (and down right massive) and even have roots in the legendary Drome to mention just a few. Has it been hard work to get to where you are now?
We’ve always put huge amounts of effort into our parties, whether they’re for 20, 200 or 2000 people, but they’re all definitely labours of love. Clockwork Prism has always taken pride in the quality of our sound systems, décor and friendly, welcoming pingy party vibes - all the crew work hard to bring it to life. We have a diverse music policy, and put on incredible live acts. We have a reputation we are proud to have!
Clockwork Prism have been involved with Antiworld since its early days at the Drome. Clockwork Prism’s unique, chunky chill-out regularly provides a little escape from the full-on party mayhem, and we love hosting the room.
Nautilus
What are your aims and is there anything as a collective you have yet to achieve?
It would be wicked to host our own stage at a festival, or even our own festival!
Our aim for each party is the same - to give people a good time every time! We take each opportunity as it comes, enjoy working and playing together, and are always aiming to make improvements for the next one.
Since the scene is constantly changing, what do you do to keep ahead of the game?
I think our strength is that we do what feels right to us at the time; we play many different styles of good, (proper!) dance music at each party, none of which is chosen as a fashion statement! We also don’t really worry about keeping ahead of the game, we’re just here to have a party.
Redtrip owes you a lot for introducing us to the world of free/squat parties. What drives you, to travel 100’s of miles to set up your rig and party?
Jonty: I find the freedom of outdoor parties irresistible; the way the rig fades into the distance as you walk into the tranquility of the surrounding countryside. The rising sun gently bringing in the day, which for us is what it’s all about. Chilling with your friends, lying on your back listening to the music, feeling the sun on your face, the thumping bass and of course lashings of ginger beer.
Mandie: How poetic, Jonty! I love the spirit of adventure that goes hand in hand with outdoor parties, that sense of being on a group mission to have a good time, whatever the weather! I believe that a sort of unique bond develops between a group of people who have all traveled miles to party with each other- outdoor parties are good for your soul! (Damn straight!!-ed)

Were you involved in music before Clockwork Prism?
Jonty: I played in bands for years, turning to the decks in the early 90s. We began doing our own parties in ’96, - the secret, legendary Castle Dancealot parties, at an amazing little 12th Century castle. Close and long-lasting friendships were made back then, and have inspired us ever since. Most of the Prism crew and you guys at Redtrip have been partying with us from the early days - we luv ya!
Mandie: We both dj on pirate radio, Point Blank 108fm, (Sundays 10-12pm) its been a big part of our lives for the last 8 years, and despite having had to broadcast from a burger van on more than one occasion, I wouldn’t want to give it up!
Oh and we mustn’t forget L’Opera in Kingston, where we ran a Saturday nights for a while… and the after-parties.
Running a party can be notoriously random at times - what have been some of the highlights from your time in club land and the free party scene?
Jonty: Our chill-out room for Paradise City at Alexandra Palace which we co-hosted with Fairy Tales, in December, where Nautilus received a standing ovation for his outstanding chill-out set (when was the last time you heard of that happening?) and also the Psychedelic Academy, at Brixton Academy, our involvement in parties at the Drome with Antiworld and Dromezone, being invited to dj for Escape From Samsara… and playing for them many times, our pirate radio show on Point Blank 108 fm, and our recent gorgeous chill-out rooms Antiworld indoor festivals in Deep Blue @the SE1.
Mandie: Our own parties at Arch 269 are high on the list of recent highlights, with live sets from zubzub, a live act who make psychedelic, funky, drum & bass They rocked our dance floor on several occasions, as did our other live bands and performers. Ambidextrous has become a firm favorite with all the crew, and we dig his funky beats.
What has been your most memorable party?
Mandie: It has to be the Notting Hill Carnival 2003, when Clockwork Prism was one of the Carnival’s official sound systems! I have never seen so many people in front of me, as far as you could see! The buzz was amazing, the experience unforgettable. A quick crew poll also included our outdoor parties at several sites- the castle (original and best), the Longman Quarry, both small and cosy, and the Moon moot, with 17 other rigs - from one extreme to another!

CORROSIVE 7 is our biggest party to date, what do you have in store for our loyal crowd?
Mandie: We are really looking forward to our chill-out for Corrosive. We will be filling our room with pingy vibes, vibrant decor and lots of sparkle. The Clockwork Prism crew will be getting on down to big helpings of what we do best - psychedelic sauciness, our fattest squelchiest beats and bass lines, and spacey, trippy dubs alongside our good ol' buddies the Redtrip crew, for a right proper party. Bring it on!
.......Way before the ravers get there, CLOCKWORK PRISM will be tirelessly setting up their phenomenal sound system and décor. Anyone who has been to one of there parties know that they can turn anywhere in to a clubbers paradise. Good friend Tom from Clubshots.uk will be on hand with his photography stall if you would like something to remember the night by!
What more can I say except we are pleased to have them on board with us, this is our biggest party to date and it's all set for a good night!
