Lisa Pin-Up is a name that has never been far from the forefront of hard dance music. From her days as a resident at the legendary Freedom @ Bagleys (now known as Canvas), and regular at the memorable Peach Goes Hard events at Camden Palace (now known as Koko!), right through to her current status as re-crowned Queen of hard house, her contribution to the scene has been unquestionable. Her versatile selection of hard, good-time party music combined with her warm, friendly and energetic personality has won her loyal fans the world over.
2005 has been a pretty busy year for Lisa so far — a full-to-the-brim DJ diary featuring regular appearances for the likes of Polysexual and Frantic, a new record label of her very own, some new productions, and a new compilation CD (Affinity) hitting the market. Her consistently solid performances around the country every week have earned her shedloads of new fans and Pin-Up ‘converts’, as well as keeping her existing fanbase happy. Her ever evolving DJ style continues to break down people’s often misguided preconceptions of her, and ensured that she is always on the cutting edge of hard house music.
May 1st will see Lisa return to London for a very tasty event at the SEOne. The long awaited return of Chemistry to the capital is set to blow London apart once again with a massive Live PA and DJ line up combined with unparalleled production values. In the last few days before the event opens up to a packed-out crowd, I caught up with Mrs. Pin-Up to delve a little deeper into her psyche...
Hi Lisa! How’s things? What’s up in your world at the moment?
Well I am in an extremely good mood of late, some fantastic gigs, loads to do, and still managing to let my hair down and have a real laugh and party and some of my events, what more could a girl ask for!
What kind of material is making up your sets at the moment?
Everyone now knows what to expect from a Lisa Pin-Up set. It may vary from the banging harder style to the more lighter vibe, but even if it is hard and twisted, you will get some bouncy beats and uplifting sounds.
Do you think that hard dance is in a healthy state at the moment?
Well judging from the amazing parties I have been to lately, it’s doing very well indeed!
Tell us about your new record label — what’s on it, and where can we get it?
It's a brand new label called Pin-Up Records and every track on the label will be produced by myself with up and coming artists on remix duties. The first release was out in January and was called 'Party Tonight'. Unfortunately all the vinyl copies have now sold out, but I have just done a deal with Tidy Trax for this release and future releases to be downloaded from their web site. If you would like to listen to a sample and download this track, please go to www.tidydigital.com
You can also download all old Lisa Pin-Up classics from www.audiojelly.com/nukleuz.cfm
Have you been in the studio much recently?
It only seems like yesterday that I had my last release on Nukleuz records, but I have the next one already lined up for release on May 23rd. It's a double sider, just like the previous, with a more softer bouncy housey track on the a side called 'Machine Gun Madness'. This has a catchy vocal and a machine gun sound effect. On the flip is one more for the harder generation, a hard as nails track called 'Really like Cocaine' and from the title you can tell it has a very naughty vocal. It’s hard and twisted but not at all dark and it is really good fun to watch peoples faces on the dancefloor when they hear the vocal — 'wow, you really like cocaine!"
You are known for embracing Spanish hard house music. Could you tell us a little bit more about it?
I am actually playing a lot more stuff from the UK at the moment, with some really great sounds coming through — though I do have a couple of banging hard Spanish tunes on order and hopefully they can arrive in time for my b2b bounce set with Andy Whitby on May 29th.
Being one of bouncy hard house’s leading spokespersons so to speak, have you seen much evidence of new bounce productions emerging?
Well apart from my own of course! It all depends on your interpretations of bounce. When I play a normal set I can play quiet hard but my music is still considered being bouncy, I just think of it as being pounding off beat basslines, but still very uplifting. I have never had a problem with finding tunes as you get two kinds of producers, the dark and deep ones, or the happier stuff that I like.
May 1st sees you play at Chemistry at The SEOne - what memories have you got of past Chemistry events?
This will be my first time for Chemistry so really looking forward to it. I have played at SeOne before and think it is an amazing venue so should be a really good night.
The SEOne has often been described as a bit of a labyrinth — what other clubs do you find that you have a tendency to get lost in?
I always seem to get lost in this venue, suppose it doesn't help that I am usually drunk by the end of the night! I did recently dj at an event in Holland called In Qontrol. This was a massive indoor event with 40,000 people and I did get lost for over an hour in this venue. The rooms were so big it was hard to recognise anything so as I was wondering around and could not tell if I had already been in some of the rooms.
Who else will you be looking forward to seeing at the event?
I am playing early at this event. My set time is 11pm—12, so I won't be around for most of the night, so I'll just have a nosey around at the other DJs on just after me.
This summer sees more festivals take place in this country than ever before — which are looking particularly tasty to you?
Bookings are still coming in, but so far I am playing Creamfields in August and Escape into the Park in London in June, which should be fun!
What has been your proudest achievement so far? Something that you can look back on in 20 years and feel really good about?
I am just so thankful for everything I have achieved so far and think so far I am just so lucky to have experienced such great memories. Every week I play at events that get my adrenaline rocketing sky high, as well as having a right laugh having loads of wild parties. I am proud to play at some of the biggest parties around the world as well as achieving great things on my production side.
I also hear that you have a new compilation out — please tell us a bit more about it.
Yes I am about to mix a new compilation, after just releasing 'Infinity' through Sony/BMG last December. This time it will be for Nukleuz, entitled 'Hard House Anthems vol 6', to be released in June this year. From the tunes that I have picked expect tons of filthy banging bounce mixed with banging beats.
When you were an aspiring DJ type, were demo tapes given out with as much frequency as CDs are these days, or did reputations grow more so on the strength of live appearances and word-of-mouth?
When I was starting out I would send out tons of mix tapes. The way I saw it was that the promoter would generally not listen to the first or second one, but if you keep sending them it would bug them to listen to at least one!
You’ve worked closely with some of the country’s most popular and extravagant promotions over the years. What’s the best publicity stunt you’ve ever seen pulled?
I've never ever pulled any publicity stunts, think just being my own silly self is enough to get noticed!
Who’s given you really good advice over the years?
I'm just trying to think and don't think I have ever taken any advice off anyone, or maybe I have just never listened... I am a bit of a control freak and like to make my own mistakes and learn from them myself! Maybe sometimes I should listen to advice, but I'm just to strong willed to do so!

After 7 months, Frantic’s legendary multi-arena show is back with a bang! Every Chemistry ALWAYS SELLS OUT and this first Chemistry of 2005 will be no different! Only SEOne has a main stage big enough to bring you the ‘in yer face’ performances of the 4 BIGGEST PAs in our scene!
This is our only stand alone date at the fantastic SEOne Complex until November 2005 and we are going to kit it out with better sound, light, décor and high-octane performers than it has ever hosted before. A majestic main arena line-up will be complimented by a big-room set-up of the highest standards – FUNKTION ONE SOUND, mind bending lighting and lasers and stunning décor, and a purpose built stage for the live PA's!
Our streetwise, hard-as-nails sister act Convergence returns in Room 2 with a slew of uncompromising DJs, ready to twist your mind and make your feet stomp. Room 3 will provide the sexy House, slamming breaks and sleazy electro, but this time it will be provided by London’s biggest underground house station, Passion!
