Peach Goes Hard preview with Reece "Wildchild" Elliot

Reece Elliot is the promoter of Wildchild - one of clubland's biggest success stories over the past few years. At the heart of his events lies a deep-rooted love of trance music, and the main emphasis of Wildchild events has always been on trance, with other styles of music blossoming out of this core musical policy. Wildchild's massively popular multi-arena events now cover hard house, hard trance, house, breaks, techno, and of course the more traditional sound of trance music, with an atmosphere and fanbase that is almost unparalleled in the hard dance scene. In this day and age of the slow death of many a former large scale club brand, Wildchild remains one a handful of promotions that keeps on churning out quality events and going from strength to strength.
The massive Wildchild vs Frantic events at the SeOne Complex were two of the most talked about events of the year, uniting many other promotions such as Hardcore 'Til I Die, Riot!, The Dirty DJs and Kurruption to create highly enjoyable nights of several styles of music. The success of such multi-arena events is clearly a testament to the fact that clubbers on the whole simply want more choice these days - and Wildchild certainly offers such ecclectism of musical policy. Other successful events with the likes of trance giants Slinky further cemented this reputation. 2005 will be Reece Elliot and Wildchild's biggest year yet, with some spectacular large-scale parties planned all over the country, and his DJ diary and production schedule looking busier than ever.
But how did he get into all this mess? And what are his thoughts on the supposed "Golden Age" of trance? And what does he listen to in the car? These burning questions must be answered! In the run-up for his appearence at the bonanza of classic dance music that is Peach Goes Hard presents History at The Scala on February 5th, the big man took some time out from his hectic schedule to answer these here questions.
G’day Reece.
Hello there geezer! (strong essex accent).
Your promotion Wildchild has grown in a short space of time to become one of the country’s most succesful dance music promotions. How did you get into all this malarkey? Had you promoted events before?
I first started putting on parties & discos when I was 14 and still at school. I used to draw the poster artwork myself and get photocopies stuck up on notice boards and generally round town. Those parties were brought to an abrupt end when the police turned up and caught loads of under age-drinkers and promptly tried to arrest my dad for being the legal guardian over the age of 18 that had hired the venue for me. From there I continued to run end of term school events at established local venues until I was 16.
At 17 I had my first taste of Ibiza and in the winter proceeding I set up my first dance music promotion – things have really blossomed from there as I have been on a harsh promoting learning curve ever since!
The combination of putting on those events and the Rave culture at massive parties such as World Dance, United Dance and Elevation at the Rollers are the crucial ingredients that got me hooked on this wicked scene. Today this scene is simply my life and each event is a dream come true.
Who else works in the Wildchild team?
The Wildchild team consists of three main partners being myself, Richard,Gem (known to you guys as the talented Little Gem) and about 35 Wildchild Cadets.
Tell us about your forthcoming event at Heaven…
Friday 4th February 2005 sees our first Wildchild event of the year kick off @ Heaven (where else). It promises to be as ever an epic battle of club brands, live acts and DJs.
We welcome the Lashed brand for the very first time co-hosting the main arena alongside Trance favuorites “Passion” and their sister Hard Dance brand “Storm”. You can expect all the usual shenanigans and more with Little Gem making her Main Room Debut, 2 hours of Lisa Lashes and something that Ive been working on getting in the main arena for a very long time - NU-NRG LIVE! These guys absolutely rock, two Italian nutbags that just so happen to make some of the best Trance in the world and are hailed by the king himself Paul Van Dyk as being the next big thing. As a promoter I’m over the moon to have them headlining the main arena for the very first time!
If that wasn’t enough we’ve got 5 Arenas, new opening hours of 10-7 to give the punters 9 prime hours of raving, over 50 djs, amazing visual, light and laser shows to hopefully deliver a cracking start to 2005!
What are your favourite venues in London? Obviously the size of your events restricts your choice of location, but where are your favourite places to boogie and why?
My fave venues for promoting have to be Heaven, SeOne and The Coronet due to their sheer size and sh*t-hot sound systems, when those places rock there’s nothing like it on earth.
In terms of having a boogie, rave or stomp there are many across the world that I have come to love including Brixton Academy, having witnessed many amazing Hard House Academy shows, NEC Birmingham, Camden Palace, The Cross, Scala and overseas you simply cannot beat “Amnesia” in Ibiza.
Coming up Wildchild have just been confirmed to host the Trance Arena @ Alexandra Palace – now that’s a f*cking venue, I havent been able to sleep since being asked to do the gig, I am that excited!
Which of the smaller London promotions have particularly impressed you?
There’s a few that I think have the potential to grow bigger including Paul Divine’s new Divine event. A great DJ, putting on a decent line-up and really going for it on the promotion.
Toxik I think are also really putting a lot of effort into their events. Therapy, the new Saturday morning concept for Twist also looks worth checking out starting on the 5th Feb.
At the end of the day promoting is all about delivering a good pacckage to the punters and as long as there are many out there giving it a go we will continue to have a vibrant scene. Its all about the Nu-Breed of talent coming through, the promoters, the DJs and importantly the punters – I salute you all!!!!
You are playing in the trance room at Peach Goes Hard presents History at the Scala on February 5th, a night of 100% classic tunes. Which tunes in particular are you excited about digging out?
Now you’re asking – there really, really are so many to choose! For me Ferry Corsten’s System F “Out Of The Blue”, Push “Strange World”, Nu-Nrg “Dreamland”, Agnelli & Nelson’s “El Nino” & Verracoacha “ Carte Blanche are all gonna rip the ceiling of the Scala from its walls and throw it at Kings Cross station full pelt. It's records like this that make me want to get up in the morning and know the world is a wicked place. I love trance by the way, don’t know if you could tell by this interivew?
Did you used to go to Peach ‘back in the day’?
Did I used to go to Peach? What kind of question is that?! Do bears sh*t in the woods? I did indeed go to many a Peach back in the day! I remember first checking Peach out in its days @ The Leisure Lounge in Holborn with DJs like, Judge Jules, Graham Gold, Andy Morris all tearing the place apart on a weekly basis. Also when it moved to Camden Palace the magic was still there. The fact we no longer have Camden Palace running Dance Events on a regular basis is a complete tragedy, Luminar Leisure should be locked up for selling it and allowing people to take away national institutions such as Peach!
1997-2000 is widely recognised as the ‘Golden Age’ of trance music. Do you feel that trance will ever be as good as it was then? Or is it just a case of it’s still great, but different?
I certainly agree that period was the Golden Age for Trance with Peach, Gatecrasher, Cream, Godskitchen all smashing it. I also believe it was a golden age for Dance Musc in general with House Music, Hard House and other styles also being very successful. I strongly believe that Trance still is massive and if you took a snapshot of the world’s clubs, you would see it being played in almost every territory. To me that is the sign of a successful sound and I will get up every day and work alongside the other Trance lovers out there as long as it takes for it to remain the global success we see today.
I have to say I have really started to appreciate the softer end of trance over the past year. Do you think that this could be attributed to an improvement in the material being produced in recent times? Nothing was catching my attention about a year ago but now I’m spoilt for choice…
I'm in total agreement that at the moment there is soooooooo much decent material out there, it is wicked being a Trance DJ! 2005 has started off with a bang with some really wicked tracks out there that I feel have the legs to go on and become anthems.
The amount of producers churning out trakcs, trying new ideas, encouraging more clubbers get into the scene is brilliant, these ingredients will help keep the scene healthy!
Do you play any other styles of music apart from trance? Is there a style that you don’t play that you would like to try your hand at?
I’ve flirted with some funky house stuff on many occasions and only in the last couple of years have stopped playing it out at clubs. One style Id love to try my hand at one day would be Drum & Bass. The Jump Up Jungle sound is what really got me into dance music in the first place with raves like World Dance etc. Those basslines and the ragga influenced samples are the stuff of legends. Many a Friday or Saturday myself, Will Frantic and Little Gem will be out in the car and Will’s like “Reece, put Kool FM on 94.6” – before you know it D&B is tearing out the speakers and we’re having it - and that’s from Trance & Hard House promoters!
Which tracks and producers are really wetting your proverbial whistle at the moment?
Brisky & GTR mix of Nu-Nrg “Dreamland 2005” – Massive classic revamped with bassline of the year so far! Armin Van Burren mix of 24 “the Longest Day” – Played this down in Cardiff last week and the place just kicked off massively!
Who is the best trance DJ in the world for you? And why do you think that trance is such a hot commodity? What is it about trance that captures the imagination of so many people worldwide?
I'm biased and have to say JFK. Not only the best Trance DJ in the world, he is also responsible for launching the careers of Armin Van Burren & Ferry Corsten in the UK and look where they are today! On top of that he is the only man in the world ever to manage 2 of the biggest Trance brands in Passion & Gatecrasher. You think of Trance, you think of JFK, you think of Gatecrasher, Passion etc.
Trance is such a hot commodity because it is pure & simple brilliant enterainment from the clubs to the punters, to the mix CDs to the records. A global sound that is embraced across the Universe. If there is a God up there, he’s listening to the latest JFK Mix CD, trust me!
What does 2005 hold for Reece Elliot and Wildchild? What are your plans?
2005 is going to be the best yet for Reece Elliot & Wildchild. On a personal level my diary is looking busier than ever before playing at some of the greatest Trance institutions the world has to offer including my first festival experience coming up this summer for Escape At The Park alongside some real legends and 30,000 of the maddest clubbers in the UK!
On the Wildchild front we kick off the year with our imminent February soundclash, we have just joined up with the massive Slammin Vinyl “Transmission” Event @ Alexandra Palace this Easter (the stuff dreams are made of!). We are just hatching plans for WiLDCHiLD Vs Frantic part 3, bigger, better than ever before at a very special venue! On top of that we have our first date in Milton Keynes in April with Judge Jules, Eddie Halliwell and many, many more as well as 25 tour dates dotted around the UK across the course of the year! All in all a bloody wicked year and its only January!
Have you ever produced any tracks, or are you hoping to do so anytime soon?
I have produced many, many tracks under the “Fingers Burnt” guise receiving many airplays from Judge Jules, Armin Van buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Tiesto and the like. Im also involved in a separate project with Simon Patterson (Dogzilla) known as “Rockstarz” which has been sgined to Darren Tate’s Mondo label. I am currently in the process of finishing some other collaborations with Pulser, Simon Patterson and Mark Dedross from the M.I.K.E./Push project “The Gift”. Looking forward I am going to working a big trancer with Adam White as well as a developing a new guise with Monster Tunes main man “Brisky”
What p*sses you off about the scene you work in? Anything?
Loads of stuff BUT I won't let it get me down, 2005 is the year of avin it!!!
What’s the strangest thing anyone has ever said to you at one of your events?
On the Wildchild Tour @ The Big Reunion in Skegness a p*ssed northerner approaches me on the stage and proceeds to ask if I have any R&B? Yes of course im a Trance DJ, how does a bit R.Kelly suit ya?
Thanks Reeces Pieces!
Thank you geezer!

One of the capital's longest running dance music promotions is back once again, following a string of highly successful parties at The Scala and Studio 33 - but this time it's going HARD! The Peach Goes Hard parties at their long-time spiritual home Camden Palace took the hedonistic vibe of the weekly Peach events, and toughened up the regular musical policy of progressive house, euphoric trance, and breaks to create a night of scintillating hard house and hard trance. It was the next logical step for Peach, and their two events continue to run alongside each other to this day.
So for this very special party, we've got the best of both events! The venue is the magnificent Scala in King's Cross - one of London's most talked about venues - and the musical policy is 100% classics. The main room will rock to the sounds of classic hard house, with a set from Peach Goes Hard favourite Lisa Pin-Up as well as sets some of London's biggest hard dance legends including Ed Real, Billy Bunter, and an exclusive back to back from Phil Reynolds and Kevin Energy. Room 2 will cover the whole of the trance spectrum, with Peach resident Graham Gold demonstrating what made Peach so legendary in the first place, and another trance supremo Mike Koglin bringing the memories of the golden age flooding back. More recent successes from the world of trance will include Tidy star Guyver, who has seldom played in the capital, and the highly acclaimed Guffy. Room 3 completes the musical jigsaw, with classic house and breaks all night long, featuring some of the capital's finest funkateers.
This one is not to be missed - a fantastic, diverse line-up, an amazing venue with top-draw production, all the classic tunes you've loved over the years, and a truckload of vibrant, happy clubbers!
