Breakbeat broken down – A short interview with rising star of the London Breaks scene, STEELO.

Over the last year or so, people have been going on about a style of music that has been around for years. In the hard dance scene, there seems to be a lot of new interest in this sound, wanting to hear it more and more, to the point where Lashed now has a room devoted to it, and Nick Sentience put some on his artist album. This style is Breakbeat, and although the breakbeat scene has been around since before most of us here probably got into dance music, it seemed to lay pretty low, and has been truly underground.
You may or may not be familiar with the big names such as Meat Katie, FreQ Nasty, or labels such as Finger Lickin’, and Y4K; but one name that seems to be popping up in these here parts is Steelo, resident on BreaksFM, and fast rising star of the London Breakbeat circuit.
Frantic vs Wildchild
I thought it was about time we got to find out a bit about the scene, and meet him properly, to see what all the fuss is about….
Steelo, first up, an introduction. How long have you been DJing, and how did you get into the scene?
I started mixing about 5 years ago. I never really took it seriously until a couple of years ago when I started getting a few little gigs here and there. I got into breaks when fabric first opened. I initially went to the club for the drum n bass but having wandered into the breaks room I was blown away. the first thing i noticed was that breaks was just like the old skool hardcore that first got me into dance music but combined with trance and dnb elements as well. It was love at first sight you could say.
How would you describe your style, and how does it differ from other DJs?
I'd say my style is down right naughty. Very naughty. I suppose I differ to other djs because they just ain’t as naughty as me lol
You’ve been spotted having the odd boogie at hard dance and trance events. How do you feel the breaks scene differs from these? And what similarities are there?
The breaks scene doesn’t have glowsticks for starters lol. They’re both similar though as the crowd are there purely because they proper love the music – likewise the music is there so the crowd can proper have it!

Recently, you’ve been getting booked to play some hard dance events, like Frantic, pretty much making the second room your own at Liquid Tek, as well as a new residency at a new event starting in 2005, . How do you find playing to these crowds?
I think its great and great for the breaks scene as a whole. There’s still a lot of people out there that don’t know ‘bout the breaks and through events such as Frantic, Lashed, Wildchild, etc, getting breaks djs in, it’s giving us the opportunity to show everyone how cool breaks is. The reaction from the majority of the crowd at these events has never ceased to amaze me ‘cause every tune you play they are pretty much hearing it for the first time usually.
For anybody interested in breaks, what’s hot and what’s not with regards to events and venues in London. What are your recommendations? And what names should we look out for on flyers?
Events wise: Chew The Fat! at The End, one Friday of every month. It’s my favourite breaks night in the capital and easily one of, if not, the best. I’ve never had a bad night there and anyone that has been will reiterate this. The next fat! on 14th Jan is going to a be heavy – they’ve got Bushwacka of Layo & Bushwacka fame, alongside the residents Paul Arnold and friendly. Dj's wise the ones to look out for are; atomic hooligan, freq nasty, Lee Coombs, Paul Arnold, Tayo, Tom Real, the Breakfastaz, Jay Cunning and myself of course lol
Do you produce? And if so, is there anything we can look forward to hearing?
Kinda! I’ve got a couple of things floating around, you will see more of that next year though. However I can tell you about a little number I wrote with Ali Wilson. The tracks called 'Voices' and is on his producer album coming out later on in the year. The reaction I’ve been getting off that track is absolutely phenomenal, it’s been tearing the venues a new arsehole every time I’ve dropped it.
Excellent! How did you get involved with Ali Wilson then?
We've been mates for years! He lives down the road from me! Lol

Last but not least, breaks fans are know to party very hard, who do you think would win, and lose in a royal rumble style stand off with them and hard house ravers?
Lol what sort of a questions that? The breaks crowd obviously!
