Chemistry Preview: Interview with Scott Bond

Having helped develop Gatecrasher into being the biggest trance club in the world, Scott Bond is one of trance’s foremost protagonists here in the UK. He has done it all and done it all over the world and clubbers going to Chemistry on Saturday 7th February will be able to see this legend in action in a rare London appearance. As well as rocking clubs worldwide Scott is also a fine producer and had a huge hit last year with his “3rd Earth” collaboration with Solarstone. We asked Shaun Rowland to catch up with him to discuss Gatecrasher, his forthcoming Chemistry gig and much more…
Shaun Rowland: Having been such an integral part of Gatecrasher for so long, is it true that you have followed Matt Hardwick in leaving Gatecrasher?
Scott Bond: I Have pulled out of Gatecrasher but this was done mid December, However I only publicly announced in January
With no Sheffield or London events on the horizon, what do you feel has gone wrong with Gatecrasher over the past year?
I am unsure at this stage of Gatecrashers plans only my own which will be revelled shortly
Are there plans for a big tenth birthday celebration this year?
I believe there is to be a series of events for the 10th Birthday
Do you think the days of the super club era are effectively at an end now? How do you see the future of club culture in the UK?
I think the whole scene needs to go back to basics, there needs to be more emphasise on value for money whilst providing a unique underground club experience. People have not stopped going out, they have just become more clued up to what's good and what is not what is authentic and what is corporate.
What has been your highlight of your dj-ing career so far?
Playing to 27500 people in the worlds largest portable structure on the millennium!
We don't see a great deal of you down here in London. Do you have more London gigs planned for this year?
Well I have gigs coming up at Heaven, The Cross & Turnmills
How do you feel about playing for Frantic, one of the best known hard dance nights in the country? And what should we expect from your set?
I am Happy to be playing for frantic after working with Will, Dickon & Lisa on the NEC event I know they are a great professional team who get results. Along with that I think it is a great thing to start using more of the trance talent on the hard dance events much the same as the trance events have hard dance rooms. The 2 scenes work well together. As for my set there is a tremendous amount of great records out there and I can't wait to drop them on Saturday.
How do you view the rise of the harder scene over the past few years?
I think it has been nothing short of a tidal wave through the dance scene and Frantic has been sat nicely on the crest of that wave.
How healthy do you see the trance scene being in the UK at the moment? Who, in your opinion, is pushing the scene forward?
The record sales are up the clubs are busy again and it is all building back up, I think as with any scene that explodes globally there is always a back lash. Trance is through that now and what is left is the original people who love the music and are passionate about what they do and are good at it. The scene jumpers have now jumped and it has left it to a more underground authentic entity.
Its time to get away from all the corporate bollox its time to get AHEAD!
The people I think are pushing the whole sound forward are Solarstone, Matt Hardwick, Above and beyond & john 00 Fleming to name a few but also the whole group of new DJ’s & producers pushing through.
Globally, where have you played in the past year that has really inspired you?
Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Tel Aviv, Istanbul & LA
There is a lot of hype at the moment surrounding the Mixmag Future Heroes. Who is your pick of the new talent that is currently pushing through?
Adam Sheridan!!!!!!
Who were your DJ heroes when you started clubbing?
Sasha, Fabio & Groove Rider.
If you could choose three Djs to play at your birthday party, who would they be and why?
Guy Ornadel, Matt Hardwick and Solar stone because these are all good friends of mine and the after party would be great.
You collaborated with Solarstone last year to produce the massive "3rd Earth" and "Naked Angel" on ID&T. What other production plans are in the pipeline for you this year?
Well we have launched our label "made in England" and we have Naked Angel remix Package due out in a month. By the end of this week we will have our third single finished which we are all really excited about. We have also just signed a rather big record from Europe which will be released after naked angel.
As a producer does the growth of downloading music from the internet excite you or scare you?
At the end of the day how can anyone moan about people downloading music if they do not offer the service , the market is constantly changing and you have to change with it, our www.madeinenglandrecords.com website is nearly finished and we will be offering tracks for download as will www.scottbond.com For years labels have been paying 1000's to get there tracks on the radio and basically get exposure now there is a new medium it can get your music out there to millions of people and the bigger labels don't like it.
I think it’s healthy to the growth of dance music as a whole. Once it has evolved to a paid for service I think peoples whole outlook on it will be very different.
There is currently a debate happening about the future of vinyl. Do you see it surviving the current explosion in CD mixing?
Well to be honest I always hated CD’s, I have done countless interviews slating Cd's ...BUT after the CDJ 1000 was released I had to eat my words. I still think there will be a vinyl market if only just for DJ's.
What tunes never leave your box when Dj-ing?
3rd earth, crazy malamute, naked angel, apex, and now the new fire and ice track !
