Promise @ Foundation - 30/1/04 Reported by GeordieLee / Submitted 04-02-04 14:18 Whatever you may think of him, when Dave Pearce is in town, you are always guaranteed a crowd. So when the Radio One Dance Anthem’s tour came to Promise, complete with baseball cap, trance trousers et al, you just knew it was going to be a busy night. Pearce may have been who many people had come to see, but he ended up as being just one cog in an amazing night of music. The promoters behind the monthly Promise events have guaranteed great things for 2004 and on the evidence of this night, they are set to deliver the goods. The first sign of this was the sight and sound of new Promise resident, Anton Fielding, on the decks for his debut. As one of the Echomen, he has been responsible for some big progressive sounds and his techier prog style which he played at Promise seemed to go down well. Indeed, Fielding was said by many people of reminding them of Promise ‘back in the day’. By the time the more established residents, Lee Foster and Richard Tulip, came on to do a back to back set, the club was already getting pretty full. A sign of how the night was going to progress. But it was Guy Ornadel who really got the dance floor moving with a superb trance set. It is obvious why this man has earned the nickname of ‘Sir Guy’ with the Promise faithful and this night was to be no exception. An almost flawless performance from Ornadel saw him undoubtedly play the best set of the night, which I enjoyed from beginning to end. It was everything that was great about trance and every single person in Promise knew it. With tunes such as Marco V vs. Jens - Loops and Things Relooped, Burned With Desire - Rising Star Dub and 643 vs. Kosheen, it was time to all hail Sir Guy. Dave Pearce had a hard act to follow and, to be fair, he did it reasonably well. You certainly couldn’t complain about his tune selection, which included Ferry Corsten – Rock Your Body Rock, Mike Robbins - Are You A Freak, Oceanlab – Satellite and another play of Marco V vs. Jens - Loops and Things Relooped just for good measure. Trying to get on the dance floor by this time though was harder than finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. And even when you did manage to push your way on, you were lucky if you could do anything more than nod your head to the music. A testament to how much everyone was enjoying the music, even if it was boiling hot and you literally had to fight for your right to party. Thankfully, a bit of relief from the goings on downstairs could be found upstairs in the backroom where Luke Nixon and Pete Robinson were treating people to a bit of funky house. On a night as busy as this though, even this seemed to be busy, but at least both Nixon and Robinson were impressive. Robinson, in particular, showing a lot of energy and enjoyment behind the decks. You could tell he was loving it almost as much as the sizable crowd that had gathered up there and he kept it busy until the end. Last on the decks downstairs was Scot Project, who played harder and harder as his set progressed. As some people had left, there was a bit more room to enjoy yourself by now but there was still a sizeable crowd providing a great atmosphere. Tunes included Ferry Corsten – Punk, Clocks – Overdrive, a mix of Binary Finary and his new tune, Feelin’ Me. If this night is a sign of things to come in 2004 at Promise then I for one can’t wait!
