Interview with Cally & Juice

By now well known from performances at some of London's biggest promotions over the last 6 months, the Welsh duo known as Cally and Juice have made a name for themselves by providing an explosive mixture of hardstyle, tricks, scratching and all sorts of manic behind the decks action. They're soon up for another London visit with their appearance at Wildchild on Saturday 6th Feb - we grabbed a few words with them:
Many people know you as the Frantic proclaimed ‘Welsh Wizards’. Tell us what magic tricks you’ve planned for Wildchild?!
We're always working on new tricks but a lot of it depends on the DJ booth on the night. If there it's cramped then we're very limited on what we can do but if there's plenty of space then it could be any one of 5 or 6 tricks, you'll have to wait and see...
Is your style pure hardstyle or do you incorporate others genres?
We’ve always played more hard trance than anything else, we really try not to stick to one definite style though not to get ‘labelled’. Recently we have been playing a lot more hardstyle in our sets, and because of the feature we were lucky enough to be given in Mixmag which was all about hardstyle, many people now think of us as hardstyle DJs, though in our sets you can hear, hard trance, hardstyle, techno and hard house, with a bit of old skool, jungle, hip-hop and breakbeat thrown in to keep it interesting.
Hardstyle is very much the music of the minute, where did you first hear it?
We were playing it before it was even called hardstyle. A lot of hard trance started to come through which had really trancey breakdowns, whereas previously it had been a lot harder. As a reaction to this certain producers who didn’t like the way it was going started to write tunes that still had the hard trance elements but dropped the trancey breakdowns. It just seemed to evolve from there. As soon as it sounded different enough people were trying really hard to give it a name and separate identity. We even heard it called ‘super-techno’ before hardstyle.
What track do you expect to tear the roof off at the first Wildchild event of 2004?
Hopefully (fingers crossed) our own latest production called ‘All You Bastards!’. Also our own bootleg remix of Ferry Corsten’s ‘Rock Your Body, Rock’.
Have you been up to any studio work recently?
Yes, after writing the named track above which Nukleuz are really interested in, we’re already working on the flip side to it, to hopefully release with it. Also we’ve been busy re-editing some of our record collection and doing the odd bootleg to keep our sets really fresh and different from everyone elses. Anyone at Ministry might have heard our opener which was our own remix of U2’s ‘New Years Day’.
Where can we expect to see you and your sound, a year from now?
Who knows, we don’t plan that far ahead. All we do know is that it’ll still be hard, uplifting and we'll definitely keep it original.
Where have you always dreamed about playing?
We've been fortunate enough over the past year to play at most of our "dream" events/venue's, for example the main stage at HHA, Creamfields and Gatecrasher. These plays will stay in our memories for ever. As for events/venues we would still like to play at, Dance Valley in Holland would probably be top of the list. We've heard so many amazing stories from other DJ's about these massive events that it would be a dream come true to play one of them.
When did you start DJing? Any tips for wannabe spinners?
Cally: 1993 - Juice: 1995 As now there is so much competition with up & coming DJs it isn’t enough anymore just to have a good demo CD. It always helps if you are seen at the events you want to play at. Since we started, if we weren’t playing out we’d be at a club or event every Friday and Saturday night, getting to know the right people and being seen supporting lots of events. After all if a promoter is going to give an up & coming DJ a set, he’s more likely to give it to someone who is supporting his event.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I'm sure we should say something like L.A. or Sydney or something but family and friends mean a lot so we'll probably stay right here in little old Wales for the time being.
How does London compare to Wales?!
Cally: As the population there is a lot greater it means all the events are a lot busier. It’s much harder to put on an event in Wales as every event fights for the same people. The one good thing though is that everyone is so up-for-it in Wales, even on a quiet night the dancefloor will still be busy!
Juice: I think the biggest difference is that you guys in London have inside toilets. That's awesome! I can't wait to get me one of those bad boys.
Name one classic tune that stays in your record box no matter where you play?
Analogic Disturbance ‘2nd Chase’, it’s well over a year old and it’s always ready to put in a set, very often as our last tune.
Name two of your most embarrassing records/cds in your collection?
Cally: Well, I was just about to say I didn’t have any but Juice pointed out I’ve got a few old Scooter records!
Juice: My most embarrassing one I think is the Jive Bunny Album. One day I'm going to pluck up the courage and ask Amo (ex Jive Bunny) from the Tidy Boys to sign it for me.
Where were you on New Years Eve?
As we run our own nights we put on a massive joint event with Breathe (Juice), Bionic (Cally), North and Absolute Hardcore at Lakota in Bristol which sold out. We also played The Rooms, Hereford, Plymouth Dance Academy, and then Frantic at Ministry of Sound New Years Day.
Tell us something nobody yet knows about?!
Cally: I worked on set as a technical advisor on the film Human Traffic working closely with Shaun Parkes (Koop) in the scenes where he had to make it look like he was DJing.
Juice: I used to be a Welsh international swimmer and captained Wales at various levels for about 5 years. Bet ya' didn't know that?
What would your porn star name be?
Do you mean by taking your first pets name and your mothers maiden name? If so Cally's would be Jake Phillips and Juice's would be Zip Morgan (Woooof!). We told an American friend of ours how to get your porn star name and he came up with Max Dick! Unbeatable we reckon.
Sum yourself up in three words
Enthusiastic, Friendly, Addicts
