Interview with The Thrillseekers

Reported by HarderFaster / Submitted 27-01-04 17:01

Steve Helstrip first achieved widespread recognition thanks to the massive success of 'Synaesthesia', supported by world class DJs Paul Oakenfold and Paul Van Dyk. Since then he's remixed Chicane's classic 'Saltwater', recorded as 'En-motion', 'Rapid Eye' and 'Hydra' and now as 'The Thrillseekers'. For their debut on Data 'Dreaming Of You', Steve teamed up with vocalist Alexis Strum and took the charts by storm. Read on for more from Steve...

What studio work have you been up to recently and can we expect to hear any of your new material at your upcoming performance at Wildchild?

Thrillseekers: The run up to Christmas was pretty full-on, finishing off the new Rapid Eye and Thrillseekers singles, Santa Cruz and New Life. I dare say I’ll be playing at least one of those. I’ve also just finished a remix for an upcoming Swedish Producer, called Witness of Wonder, with a track called Emotions in Motion, which is looking like a big tune for 2004.

Which one of your productions is your favourite?

Thrillseekers: I’ve produced under a few different guises. In no particular order, some of my faves include: Hydra ‘Affinity’, Insigma ‘Open our Eyes’, Rapid Eye ‘Circa Forever’, my Thrillseekers remix of Ascension ‘Someone like You’ and Synaesthesia, if not only because it opened so many doors for me.

When did you start DJing? Any tips for wannabe spinners?

Thrillseekers: I first had a go at mixing back in 1995 on my mates’ decks, as you do, but didn’t get into properly until I bought my own in ’98. DJing and producing kind of go hand in hand these days, so the best advice I could give is to learn both skills and get some music out there.

If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing now?

Thrillseekers: Producing has always been my main thing - the DJing came later - so I guess I’d still be stuck in a studio somewhere making music, like I am now!!!

What have you heard about Wildchild and what have you got planned for us there?

Thrillseekers: It’s one of only a few nights in London that continues to draw in a dedicated crowd, time and time again, from right across the South. The past few months have been some of the best in a long while for new, quality trance, which I’m looking forward to playing. I’ll also be airing some of my new productions and remixes, so watch out...

What track do you expect to tear the roof off at the first Wildchild event of 2004?

Thrillseekers: A big favourite of the moment, which is tearing up the floor is a track called Twister, by Sam Sharp. Can’t wait to play this cheeky little number.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Thrillseekers: I would love to live in Sydney one day. I’ve been lucky enough to tour Australia twice and I just fell in love with the place.

Where’s the best place to go clubbing in the UK really – North or South?

Thrillseekers: There are good and bad nights up and down the country. If the club has a good attitude, and the crowd is up for it, does it matter where it is???

Name one classic tune that stays in your record box no matter where you play?

Thrillseekers: The Quest ‘C-Sharp’

Name two of your most embarrassing records/cds in your collection?

Thrillseekers: They don’t get more embarrassing than this: Musical Youth ‘Pass the Dutchie’. This was the first tune I ever bought. I’ve also got a Steps album somewhere, which someone bought me for Christmas as a joke. No, really!

What did you get up to for New Years Eve?

Thrillseekers: I spent all night at Passion. And what a wicked night. I played for an hour and followed that with a live set for 20 mins. This took us to 11.30 when JFK took over for the midnight set. He played my mix of Ascension’s Someone at midnight , which has been a Passion anthem for years. This topped the night off perfectly...

Tell us something nobody yet knows about?

Thrillseekers: I’m in the process of setting up a new label for all my own productions. Watch this space...

What would your porn star name be?

Thrillseekers: According to www.whatsyourpornstarname.com Ben Hamilton....eh?

Sum yourself up in three words...

Thrillseekers: A bit mental.

The Thrillseekers make their debut @ Wildchild on Friday 6th February showcasing their brand new mix of the all time trance anthem ‘Synaesthesia’. For full details of this event click here
