Tidy @ Magna 7 - Reviewed!

Reported by Ben Cooper / Submitted 17-09-03 14:51

It took us a while to find the Magna centre in Sheffield but instantly found the queue to get in. You couldn’t miss it. It stretched back a good two hundred metres form the entrance and didn’t seem to be moving. Oh dear. Luckily help was at hand in the form of a press pass (thanks HarderFaster) that got me in straight away but mates who jumped the queue were waiting for about an hour and a half, getting inside at just gone twelve. This wasn’t funny, especially given the £28 ticket price which Tidy claimed was only a little bit more expensive than a normal night out clubbing. Hmmm.

The Venue!

Maybe the price was proportional to the size of the Magna centre, a huge old steel works turned into a science centre and converted to club for the night. The centre was divided into seven zones. The biggest being the massive warehouse that was the Tidy main room. Music policy here was big room euphoric hard dance with DJ such as the Tidy Boys, Eddie Halliwell, Lisa lashes and Judge Jules. The ‘Face of Steel’ second room catered for those of us who prefer the harder stuff. About quarter of the size of the main room and under a ridiculously high roof DJs Ian M., Amber D, Farley, BK, Tara Reynolds Glazby and Lab 4 promised us some thumping hard house. Maybe unsurprisingly, the funky and hardcore bubbles did turn out to be bubble shaped both inside and out. Not really my sort of thing so after an initial inspection, I gave them a miss for the rest of the night. Fans of both genres claimed to have had a really good time in them though and I’m sure they did. Opinion was divided about whether a hard house event should have these additions. I’m not too sure they add anything but doubtless others will disagree.

Lights, camera action!

At least they lived up to their name which is more than you could say about the digital entertainment (six x-boxes stuck to a fence. The see through drinks machine gave far more entertainment value, made my mate Lee’s night and I only wish I’d found it sooner), chill out (area between entrance and the toilets furnished with floor style seating), and VIP zones. This was handy because it gave me another toilet option on the ground floor, but the ‘space pod’ lacked atmosphere, seating and VIP’s. £50 for a VIP ticket. No Thanks. One set of toilets by the entrance took ages to reach from anywhere. This wasn’t helped by the fact that the venue itself proved difficult to negotiate. Size and layout meant that finding mates was always tricky. A one way system throughout the magna centre meant that at first you had to queue to move anywhere. Loads of people got really annoyed with this but it got better as the night went on, people settled down, and some of the one way system was abandoned.

You're on next mate...

On to the good points. Atmosphere, crowd, and music were superb. The sound set up in the main room was great and despite its size, the sound was loud and clear throughout. Whilst the big room tunes sound isn’t really my cup of tea, I ended up spending a fair amount of time in there. Lee Haslam played some tears in your eyes and hands in the air hard trance which I hate to admit I really enjoyed and was nicely calming before a long stint in the ‘Face of steel’ Eddie Halliwell treated us to some amazing scratching and great tunes. We were forced to miss most of the Tidy Boys’ set as the main room had reached capacity and entrance was barred. I caught the end of it finding the crowd loving the bouncy stuff. Judge Jules came on and it was time to leave.

The Tidy Boys with Judge Jules

In contrast, sound quality suffered in the Face of Steel with some especially thumping tunes not as clear or loud as we’d hoped. Having said that, Tidy must have had a hard job setting up the room bearing in mind the awkward size and shape. Music was absolute class though. Amber D and Farley really started to get things going playing some pretty techy, but still thumping hard house. Lab 4 performed an awesome PA from behind a screen featuring a pyrotechnic display and a run along the front of the crowd which caused mayhem in the best possible way. Glazby played nice and hard for those of us still going at the end. Only BK was disappointing. A special mention to Tara Reynolds who I haven’t heard play out since Frantic last year. Her set of energizing, hard as you like, pure hard house was without a doubt the best on the night.

Andy Farley

In both rooms the crowd was superb. Whether doing some energy draining stomping in the Face of steel or hands in the air dancing in the main arena, pretty much everyone seemed to be completely up for it and having a wicked time. Loads of clubbers had made a real effort dressing up which was good to see. Smiles were everywhere and everyone I met was really friendly. I saw no trouble despite all the queuing. Add this to the unusual venue, quality music and its unsurprising that the atmosphere inside was so good. Even at six o’clock people seemed excessively awake and cheerful.

The Clubbers

Just before one last tune the main room MC announced a plan to return there for New Year’s Eve. He apologised for the queue (nice) and wanted to know if we’ll being going back for it. Very possibly yes.

Thanks to HarderFaster for the pass, Mates, Tidy, clubbers for a class night out, and Archie the minibus driver who probably had a fit clearing out the minibus on Sunday afternoon.

Nice review but in relation to your comments on the Hardcore and Funky Bubble:

"Opinion was divided about whether a hard house event should have these additions. I’m not too sure they add anything but doubtless others will disagree."

You should ask the people who were thoroughly enjoying the music in both arenas! Both rooms made a welcome alternative to the bigger arenas as those wanting to go harder checked out the Hardcore room and those wanting a less frantic pace headed for the Funky room. I feel these styles certainly have a place at these events, after all variety is the spice of life and if you don't enjoy those particular musical genres then don't go in the rooms - simple!

I can vouch that the Hardcore room was electric all night and from 2am - 6am the room was completely full - result!

I can only agree with with Brisk there. I happened to stumble through the hardcore bubble while navigating the one way madness and much to my suprise I stayed their for a while and had a kick ass time. Hardcore ain't my style, but just a brief venture into the unknown has broadend my horizons.

I think the main let down of the night was the hours of queues to begin. In my view, no one had thought through the logistics of searching 5000 people on entry with only one entrance.

Stars of the night had to be Lab4 with what can only be descibed as an awesome performance!

Great writing! Never been to this venue but sounds like a fab night. i definitely think funky rooms and different rooms are a great advantage. Nice to pop in and out of and meet different types of people. Well done!

why is Judge Jules not liked

From: PeteToast on 26th Sep 2003 16:29.12
We came off the motorway at the wrong junction cos I'm a gimp. Lol. Judge Jules isn't liked because he is so unprofessional sometimes. It can't be denied that hes done a shed load for dance music. I respect him for that. I don't respect some of his pitiful attempts at DJing that i have witnessed in the past.

funny i was at the front when Jules came on, he wasn't booed and played up to a somewhat difficult crowd and i know the majority of ppl in that room were stomping when he was on, even if i did choose that moment to find the loo lol....boss night and i will return for NYE fingers crossed
