Tiesto@Gatecrasher London - Review
Reported by Shaun

It was that time again for the Northern Trance Juggernaut to roll into London and destroy everything in its path – Gatecrasher was here once again to bring joy to all those who appreciate good quality trance music and the best atmosphere in London. The line up tonight was arguably the best they have ever had. Not only wonder kid Eddie Halliwell and supreme GC resident Matt Hardwick but also a three hour appearance from the world’s number one Dj: Tiesto.
The last Gatecrasher event with PVD was slightly tainted by the ridiculous overcrowding that occurred in the first few hours of the event, so I was very pleased to see that this time measures had been put in place to prevent this from happening again. The cloakroom queues were orderly and the whole club, already virtually full at 10.30pm, was flowing perfectly. As usual the crowd was an excellent mixture of all different types of clubber from the traditional Gatecrasher Cyberkid to try hards to your normal every day punter. The great thing about this crowd is that no one group dominates the night so it is a great melting pot of people (and pikey free at that ;o) )
In the main room an unknown DJ (not listed on flyer) was warming the crowd up with a mix of progressive house and trance – just the thing to help warm those trance toes up before the synths and strings begin. The kind of music that you start dancing to almost without knowing it, slowly getting more excited from within about the main attraction of the night which is about to commence. At midnight something quite surprising happened, the music went silent and none other than Tiesto walked onto the stage to begin his set. This came as a surprise as I was expecting him to be on later in the night but what the hell, now was as good a time as ever to hear the master at work.
The dance floor by this stage was very very busy and the words Sardines and Tin came to my mind but I persevered and was rewarded when in as little as 30 minutes time the dance floor changed to being comfortably busy as opposed to uncomfortably busy. It was now time to concentrate on listening to the man.
Tiesto was recently voted by 30,000 people as the number one DJ in the world. He was at the forefront of the Dutch Trance “revolution” in 1999 and has since cemented his reputation as a purveyor of high quality trance. His sets at parties such as Homelands 2002, the Gallery and the Dome NYE 2001 have been critically acclaimed not only by clubbers but also by the music press, who traditionally look down upon trance djs. The reason for this is because Tiesto, like PVD, is more than just a trance DJ – he is a dance music DJ and this was shown tonight as he provided the crowd with a three-hour rollarcoaster of a ride through prog, house, trance and a fair amount of techno as well. The thing that was so great about this set was not the individual tracks he played but the way in which all these individual tunes together made a musical masterpiece. And that’s just what it was: a masterpiece. From the moment he played the first record he had the crowd captivated and everyone was wondering how this magical journey would end. Yep, I am using a lot of superlatives here but I really was that impressed by this set. Paul Van Dyk has played some unbelievable sets at Gatecrasher but this set from Tiesto was out of this world. He would take the crowd down the road labelled “driving techno” and then would suddenly take a sharp turn down “trance avenue” – you never knew what he was going to produce next and that’s what made it so exciting. Individual tunes did stick out however: Iio’s “In the End,” “Tears from the Moon” by Conjure One and a wicked remix of Madonna’s “Die another Day” for example. The tune of the set though had to be Darren Tate’s “Let the light shine in,” a truly beautiful piece of trance music that makes you reach for the sky with an inane grin on your face and a million goosebumps rising on your back. Yet another Gatecrasher clubbing moment to die for.
Looking around the vast main room of Heaven during his set it was clear that I was not the only one who was being inspired by what I was seeing and hearing. A mass of shiny happy people, dancing and having the time of their lives - Dutch flags with Tiesto written on them hoisted in the air by his eager fans, people sitting on people’s shoulders and appearing above the crowd so they could fully appreciate what was happening here. In fact it reminded me more of a concert than a club event such was the revelry and the atmosphere!
Phew! Well the Tiesto rollarcoaster finally disembarked at 3am and Matt Hardwick took over the wheels of steel. At this point I decided to have a bit of a rest after the mayhem that had just occurred so I missed the first half hour of Hardwick’s set.
Since hearing Hardwick at the last Gatecrasher NEC and hearing his superb Gatecrasher Resident Series mix CD I have been eager to see him ever since. A DJ who only plays the “purest” of trance is always good in my books and he didn’t disappoint tonight. The tune selection was excellent, although he did have trouble maintaining the Tiesto atmosphere (but then who wouldn’t?) The crowd had now put on their trance trousers and wanted nothing less than sweeping, euphoric, uplifting trance. Hardwick responded by playing some of the biggest trance tunes of the moment from the gorgeous “Solarcoaster” by Solarstone to the eerie “Roccoo” by Kansai. It was pure hands in the air stuff as usual from the Gatecrasher resident.
At 5am at every club it’s the time where people begin to flag a bit and they need something a bit extra from a DJ to keep them going. Some people need to be uplifted from this time, some people like to hear classics and some people like it to be given to them as hard as possible. Well the next DJ up gave the Gatecrasher crowd a mixture of all of these things.
Possibly the biggest rising star in the dance scene at the moment Eddie Halliwell is no stranger to Gatecrasher, who he is resident for in Sheffield, but this was his chance to play to the London crowd. I have seen him twice before this and I have to say I have been disappointed both times but tonight I was extremely impressed with him. Hardwick finished his set on the storming “First Impression” by Dave Joy and then the sound system fell silent. Halliwell came up to the decks, pulled his special talent from out under his sleeve and began to cut up those decks in an astonishing way. His scratching was simply fantastic and although it didn’t always go with the music perfectly the skill and aptitude was there for everyone to see. It also added an extra something to his set, which was great – it’s always nice to see someone making a bit more effort than every one else.
The set itself was a hard edged techno and trance set, Halliwell was determined to get the crowd jumping and pumping for the last hour of the night and he succeeded admirably. Tunes such as “Secret Wish” by Boccaccio Life and “Funky Camera” had the crowd jumping round like rabbits and boshing to their hearts content. The other great thing about Halliwell is his charisma behind the decks, its always cool to see the DJ enjoying himself as much as you and Halliwell was dancing and whooping and loving every minute of it - his actions are very similar to that of his mentor Judge Jules and you can tell that Jules has been a big inspiration for him. This energy projected into the crowd and made the set even more electric.
The saying is all good things must come to an end and that was obviously true of Gatecrasher. As six O’clock struck the music went off and the lights came on. But of course there is always time for one more isn’t there? and Halliwell finished off the night in spectacular style. After about a minute of listening to just scratching from Halliwell we wondered if the last tune would ever begin, then suddenly Halliwell lifted his fingers off the record and the recognisable synths of Art of Trance’s classic “Madagascar” came booming through the speakers – the crowd went crazy, like they had just seen their favourite football team score a late winning goal in the FA Cup final! Halliwell came from out behind the decks and danced on the stage with the crowd going bananas around him. Admittedly he only plays records but it was fun to see a DJ acting in such a rock star manner! Once the euphoria of that tune had died down it really was time for the final tune and Halliwell finished it all in style by playing that old classic “Blue Fear” by Armin – TUNE!
Well, what can I say? My opinion of this event after the last one had taken a slight knock but after this one it’s as high as it ever was. I wish I could find fault with the night, I wish I could stop sounding so sycophantic but the plain truth of the matter is that I believe that this is the best club in London if not England at the moment. The emphasis is all on musical quality, the crowd is wicked, the venue is one of London’s best and the whole night is just magical. Sure it’s busy, but if you are going to see the best DJs in the world surely this is to be expected? The other great thing about Gatecrasher is it now feels like a London club. In the first few months it felt like a Northern Import but now it feels like it has always been here and is now deeply ingrained into the fabric of London’s party scene. It has exploded onto the scene in London and has more drive and energy behind it than George Bush’s desire for war. The next one features Ferry Corsten and Nu-NRG live and then PVD comes back in April. If there is one club you have to go to this year, it’s this one.
10/10
The next Gatecrasher London with the talent of Ferry Corsten spinning for 3 hours is on Friday 28th March - for full details click here.

From: The Scene on 14th Mar 2003 16:01.35 Fair enough the music was fantastic, the crowd wicked and the atmosphere brilliant but what about the overcrowding?
Thank god they had the Soundshaft open, as I spent the duration of Tiesto's set in there boshing with good friends and this rescued a night that would have been ruined for me by the fact that you simply could not move let alone dance
The problem is that the people who go to GC go to see the big DJs and hence all pile into the main room, causing the club's capacity to be packed into one space, rather than dispersed evenly over Heaven's 4/5 rooms. Yes this adds to the atmosphere, but personally I like a bit of space to dance, let alone be able to go and get a drink / have a wander. There was simply no chance of this at GC - if you went, you lost your space and had to fight very hard to get it back. I would hate to think what would happen had there been a fire or if someone had been in trouble and needed to get out of that main room
6/10
BTW "It has exploded onto the scene in London and has more drive and energy behind it than George Bush’s desire for war" - nice!

Bullshit. Absolute bullshit. You mean after 30 mins on the dancefloor you came up and were too fucked to care about how rammed it was.
From: shauny69 on 14th Mar 2003 17:42.41 it not bullshit, I had space to dance after 30 mins, as you weren't there you cant really offer an opinion on it.
From: shauny69 on 14th Mar 2003 17:47.22 "what about the overcrowding? "
I seriously did not find this a problem. Remember reviews are subjective and this is my opinion of the night - yours maybe very different.
From: OpaqueJake on 17th Mar 2003 12:28.13 re: overcrowding The main dancefloor was absolutely rammed, I made a few 20 minute excursions down there from the Soundshaft and it was generally too hot to dance. Having said that the amount of people made the atmosphere absolutely amazing - more like a rock gig than a dance event (especially seeing as you couldn't dance, just kind of move up and down).
I was inspired by Tiesto's set. You have to admit though, that with 500 less people in the club it would have been much, much better. They shouldn't be using The Soundshaft as an overspill.
Verdict
Music - 10/10 (including the incredible Defected Room).
Organisation - 5/10 As bad as expected.
Crowd and atmosphere - 9/10.

hahahahahahahaaaaaa....... you two are completely bonkers!!
From: Tanya on 22nd Mar 2003 15:42.47 Sorry, but after going to the first 3 GCs in London, each time fully optimistic that I would actually get to dance, I finally accepted that this is an event that I will have to give a miss. It is just way too packed. Don't get me wrong, I love Gatecrasher and I love Tiesto, van Dyk et al, but its just not worth the cramped conditions. I agree, go dance in the Soundshaft if you do go but you are trading space for atmosphere. If you want the real Gatecrasher experience, make the pilgrimage to Sheffield, its totally worth it. And as for shauny 69, the fact that you always seem to have space can only lead me to believe that you are one of the completely monged out individuals that jumps around at the front with complete disregard for the people around you and so everyone lands up giving you a wide berth.
From: tom on 22nd Mar 2003 23:23.47 classic
From: Nomi Sunrider on 23rd Mar 2003 19:46.12 It was still way too overcrowded although I did enjoy the night on a whole. Eddie halliwell . . . if you want to listen to someone scratch over this type of music go listen to Jon Doe & Lee James, (much better) but I did like his enthusiasm

>> Probably because I dont eat as many cream cakes as some people
No seriously, I understand the busyness is a problem for some people but not all people. I am not the only one who is not affected by it I know of plenty of other people as well. Everyone has their own irritations I guess. At the end of the day if the best DJs in the world are playing then its going to be full - end of.
From: Dirk Diggler on 12th Apr 2003 16:11.31 Tanya must have seen me at PvD in Feb.
From: BottleofWater on 15th Apr 2003 13:31.25 I hadn't seen the additions by tanya and the others. I agree with tom; classic!
