becomeone: with love - Review

Reported by The Scene / Submitted 24-02-03 21:14

Saturday 15th February was a big day for Londoners. Around 1million people marched through the streets with the common cause of averting a war in the Middle East. Arsenal were playing arch-rivals Man Utd in a clash that could decide who takes this year’s Premiership. And there was also a few little rugby matches that were putting bums on seats around the pubs.

However, I, for one, didn’t witness any of these events. Political apathy? Lack of sporting prowess and hence interest? Well, yes, probably. But there was also the fact that I was too busy stomping away with the ever friendly and up-for-it becomeone crowd in (sub)Logic… Smile

Fresh from their success as Harderfaster.net’s ‘Best New Promotion of 2002’ accolade, and an unforgettable New Year’s Eve party, Saturday 15th February saw becomeone’s first event for 2003: becomeone: with love. Running from 2pm until 10pm, becomeone’s recipe for success is a funky start to get everyone warmed up, then a bit of deep and sexy progressive to lead into soaring trance and hard dance to finish it all off.

As I made my way down the stairs of (sub)Logic and up to the bar to order a Corona, I felt a distinct sense of deja-vu. This is one of the only events at the moment that I plan my diary around not missing, and as I heard Flash, becomeone’s resident funky house maestro, drop the bass of Kings of Tomorrow’s ‘Finally’ I remembered one of the reasons why I and others keep returning – quality, diverse, music. Flash’s set twisted and turned to encompass filtered, phat and at times particularly cheeky house, taking in tunes such as Asmodeus’ ‘Feel Your Body’, DJ Sneak’s ‘Fix You Sink’ and a particularly tasty funky remix of Missy Elliot’s ‘Work It’ that’s been doing the rounds recently.

Next up on the decks was Tim Davison, another becomeone resident and a purveyor of the more progressive side of house music. By this time a fair few faces, both familiar and new, had made their way into the red planet that is (sub)Logic, and Tim kept the place cool and vibey with tracks such as ‘Blue Song’ by Mint Royale, ‘Pray’ by Syntax and Sasha and Junkie XL’s ‘Breezer’.

Oliver Leighs, the first guest of the day, was next, and this is a man that caused me to turn round to someone halfway through his set and say “he doesn’t make mistakes, does he?”. Well, frankly he doesn’t. Hailing from New Zealand, where he shared a residency with Steve Hill at Tatou in Wellington, Ollie’s sound is trance all the way, but strictly no cheddar ( Wink ), with a record collection that seems to span most of Europe. Now I pride myself on being a bit of a trainspotter when it comes to tunes, but it’s rare I recognise more than one or two in this man’s sets! Today, however, he got the feet on the dancefloor with tunes such as Armin Van Buuren’s ‘Yet Another Day’, Hydra’s ‘Infinity’ and ‘Urban Shakedown’ by Solar Factor.

Shaun Rowland, co-promoter of becomeone and lover of all things trance, started his set with the gorgeous ‘Love Washes Over’ by Art Of Trance, and by this time, (sub)Logic (on Argyll Street, near Oxford Circus) was almost full of people going Smile or Big grin. Tomcraft’s ‘Loneliness’ (which is fast becoming a becomeone anthem), System F’s ‘Solstice’ and Jurgen Vries’ ‘Opera Song’ (featuring Charlotte Church - love it or hate it Wink Eek! ) kept everybody dancing, and it was clear that Shaun’s recent sets at nights such as Twisted, Ground Zero and Plasma have certainly been deserved.

Those with feet that weren’t too sore from marching earlier were in for a treat when Stewart Rae took his place behind the 1210s. Building his set from where Shaun left off, before long the whole crowd was rocking to dark Germanic trance in the shape of tunes such as C4’s ‘Mysterious Place’ and the classic ‘O (Overdrive)’ from DJ Scot Project. Stewart is a DJ who has gone from strength to strength since I first saw him playing in July last year – his mixing is consistently faultless, with some very original tricks and styles, and his sound is becoming a very distinctive mix of both British and German hard trance. Hence his recent success in securing upcoming gigs at both Zoology and Farenheite (back to back with another becomeone resident, the lovely miss c). Certainly a man to watch.

So, on to the second guest to finish this party off with a bang, and what better man to do that than HarderFaster.net’s own ‘daddy’, Tom Allen. Tom is gaining a fantastic reputation on the London scene, and is now a regular guest at promotions such as Frantic, Tasty and Heat. From this set, you can see why he’s enjoying this success. Tom started things off with the classic ‘Hooked’ by 99th Floor Elevators and went through quality old and new, such as DJ Kim’s ‘Jetlag’ (one of his signatures Wink ), ‘Supersound’ by Ewok and ‘The Curse of Voodoo Ray’ by The Edison Factor. And what better way to end than Parker and Clind’s ‘Generator’ - I can tell you I wouldn’t have been surprised to see families giving up their seats at Chitty Chitty Bang Bang next door to come and have a stomp to this monster of a tune Smile

So, around came 10pm and it was time to chill out, go to another party or start sorting out the calendar to make sure of being at the next becomeone on March 15th. I’ll certainly be there again and judging from the sweaty bodies and big grins doing their best to stumble out of (sub) Logic, I don’t think I’ll be alone. Congratulations on another great party guys, but Shaun, please quit it with Charlotte Church… Razz

The next becomeone event, becomeone: with angels is on Saturday 15th March at (sub)Logic. For full details on lineups etc click here.
