Interview with Guyver Reported by Robert Muir / Submitted 28-01-03 14:55 The force behind the prolific Riot Bros’, Kronos and Guyver is actually Guy Mearns, a 17 year old from Beverley, West Yorkshire. Over the last six months Mearns has remixed some of the biggest ‘tidy’ classics of all time and produced two singles for ‘tidytwo’. This would comprise a hectic schedule for any successful DJ/producer, but at just 17, Mearns is now drawing comparisons with the likes of BK and Signum. Read on for more... Robert Muir: As one of the youngest producers that I've personally heard of, how long have you been making tracks? Guy Mearns: I have been making tracks for about 2 years now, I got into the whole scene when I was 15 and immediately got some decks and learnt how to mix, then I got into the producing side of things about a year later and worked my arse off everyday to get a professional sound and get what was in my head onto the computer. RM: Were you helped on your way? GM: Not directly, I see artists that inspire me as help but no one has ever shown me how to do things production wise. Its just been a case of experimenting with things and learning it all as I went along, I had a lot of fun teaching myself and I think if you teach yourself then it contributes to getting your own style and technique. RM: How did you meet The Tidy Boys? They said you were one to watch in an interview I did with them in the summer of 2002? GM: Well, I simply sent a demo CD with four tracks on it to Amadeus and about a week later he called me on my mobile and asked me to come in for a chat and that he loved my tracks, I couldn’t believe it! RM: Do you think personally that the production quality in the scene has gone up in 2002, as I think it was going downhill for a couple of years prior to that? GM: I think overall the quality isn’t as good as what it used to be but there are still some really good tracks coming out. Maybe because hard house has had its boom, it’s just settling down now and growing into a healthier variety of music. There are lots of different styles about now, hard trance had its boom in 2002 and that is settling down too now. I think ‘techier’ productions are going to be the big thing in 2003. RM: The “Man on the Moon” is one recent tune that I've been playing and have got a good response from, question is, what was the sample as its been bugging me – was it in a film? GM: It was actually a speech from the assassinated president JFK, not sure if it was in a film or not. RM: What has been the highlight of your career so far? GM: Definitely playing my tracks in Cape Town, South Africa, the crowd is really friendly down there and the scenery is breath taking! To go there at such an early time in my career was wicked! RM: Have you played any festivals this year – if so which one really shone through? GM: If you class the Tidy Weekender as a Festival then yes, but that’s the only one! 2002 was my year to concentrate on producing so I wasn’t DJing out so much. In 2003 I’m going to be pushing myself and DJ a lot more. RM: Will you be playing at the next Tidy Weekender? GM: Yes, I am doing a warm up set on the Saturday night in the main arena, and a main set on the Sunday in the ‘Tidy Two’ arena. RM: What clubs do you enjoy playing at? GM: Any club with a good atmosphere really, I tend to enjoy myself wherever I am. RM: When you're not working, what clubs do go to? GM: Sundissential North is a favorite! And I occasionally go down to Slinky Bournemouth which is a really good venue too. RM: What do you listen to at home apart from Hard House? GM: I’m into my trance, so I like to listen to chilled out trance when I’m relaxing, but I also like Portishead and even Eminem! RM: Tony De Vit in my eyes was the greatest Producer/DJ that there has ever been, whom do you rate as the crème de la crème? GM: I’m too young to remember TDV, so I can’t really give my opinion on what he was like as a DJ. In my opinion no one can touch BK at the moment; his actual productions are mind blowing! RM: I’ve got to ask what tunes still blow you mind, and still give you goose bumps? GM: Freefall – Skydive, Carte Blanche – Veracocha, X Cabs – Neuro 99, If you notice they are all from 98/99 classic trance tracks! RM: Now that’s the past tracks – what are you playing at the moment that people are really responding to? GM: At my last gig I played a variety of stuff, to try and balance the hard trance out a bit as there is a bit too much of it around at the moment. The ones that got the biggest response were my remix of Rob Tissera – 'Burnin’, Paul Maddox’s remix of 'Travel' – Bulgarian, and of course my own track 'Man On The Moon'. Bk’s 'Wanna ride' always goes down well too. RM: Do you prefer the studio or DJing? GM: Depends on what mood I am in, I definitely get more satisfaction from working in the studio. RM: Do you have any plans for your own record label in the future? GM: Maybe, but it wouldn’t be for a while. I’m happy just learning more about running a label first before I go jumping in the deep end. RM: One last one Guy, what all time classic line up would you love to witness if you were out clubbing yourself? (Past DJs OR present). GM: Difficult one! Well these are my favorite entertainers at the moment... Tidy Boys, Lab 4, BK, Paul Glazby. And I would add Tony De Vit because I never got to see him DJ.
