Interview with the Tidy Boys Reported by Robert Muir / Submitted 20-09-02 18:10 Andy Pickles and Amadeus Mozart set up Tidy Trax in 1995 as an outlet for their own productions. They've gone on to create one of the biggest hard house labels in the world and played all around the world as the Tidy Boys. Rob Muir caught up with them as they prepare for the Tidy Weekender 2. Rob Muir: Let me start at the beginning, how did you come about with the name and Trade mark tidy? Andy: - Amadeus and our tidy.com director Martin Smith were on a train coming back from London, looked at the keep Britain tidy logo and thought if we turn the bin upside down and put a deck on top that it would be an iconic little logo. Amadeus: Yes, we were trying to come up with a logo and name that we would be able to market as a very strong brand the tidy logo is known all over the world, many people think of tidy Trax when looking at packaging now rather than throwing rubbish in the bin. RM: What was the first event that you went to that changed your life and steered you into the Dance scene? Andy: Sundissential North and Trade. Amadeus: Trade, but I have been into dance music since 1982, some of the gay clubs back in the early eighties got me into harder faster music - it was called Hi NRG back then. RM: What was the first gig you played at? Andy: - As the tidy Boys it was 'All around the world' in Jersey followed by a huge rave for 8000 people in Johannesburg. RM: I would class Tony De Vit as the best that there has have ever been Production wise and DJ wise - who do you class yourselves? Past/Present/Future) Andy: It would be very bold of ourselves to suggest any ranking in the Dj, production world, we would rather other people draw their own conclusions. We just do what we feel and hope people get off on it. Some people will think we are pratts whereas other people will think we are heroes..... You decide! One thing is for sure TDV will never be beaten! Amadeus: Tony was a great producer although he was inspired by the likes of what Baby Doc was producing at the time, I was a big fan of an engineer called Bernie Hurst who worked with Red Jerry - JX and Baby Doc. I'm a big fan of well produced material - we have always tried to stick to good productions at tidy - we have invested in the future producers, we have just signed two lads, 17 and 19 years olds - Guy Mearns and Paul Maddox. As far as DJing goes Tony De Vit was the greatest and still would be if he was here today. RM: If you're personally out clubbing yourselves (if you've got the time that is??) where do you go to enjoy yourselves? Andy: Funkissential ..... For a bit of Trophy Twins and Chris James action. Amadeus: I used to go to Trade at Turnmills - but haven't been for ages, if I'm out and not working it would more likely be at a restaurant or a lounge bar. RM: What tune still gives you great memories when you listen to or play - takes you back to that first moment you heard it and gives you goose bumps?? Andy: Signum - What ya got 4 me ..... Heard it on a Midem promo CDR, knew it was something a bit special and signed it, even today it is still my favourite record. Amadeus: Yes, Signum "What Ya Got 4 Me" - it inspired Tony to make "The Dawn" which also gives me goose bumps. RM: Have tidy any new productions in the pipeline that are blowing the crowds away at the moment? Andy: Our release schedule is stronger than it has ever been in the past 7 years, hard house has grown up and we now have some amazing sounds coming through. Nick Sentience has just done a remix of Dj Spoke 'Ignition' for tidy which is hitting new territory. Watch out for Paul Janes' remix of 'The Committee - Welcome' and some quality moments from Paul Maddox and Guyver. Amadeus: Yes.. I am the ears of the tidy label and I can honestly say that the next 6 months releases are some of our best yet, it's an exciting time again, melody and good production values are back in fashion and that's where tidy has always been. RM: What plans do you have for the future of Tidy Trax? Andy: Keep doing what we do, the ethos behind tidy is that if we are going to do something let's do it well, be that a website, a weekender, a single or an album. Who knows where the tidy brand will take us, we hope to soon be selling tidy Travel! Amadeus: We will keep having fun with what we do - we don't take ourselves too seriously but we do take our business very seriously. tidy is already a lot bigger than we originally thought it was going to be - so who knows what's around the corner. RM: The tidy weekender coming up soon - do you have plans to beat the last weekender, which I heard was every Hard House enthusiast's dream weekend? Andy: The last weekender is a hard act to follow but we have invested a lot into TW2, it will be bigger and better. With about six weeks to go we are virtually sold out, if people are expecting to book a place just before the event they are going to be disappointed. tidy TV is going to be incredible this time, as well as the pre-recorded stuff we are also having a live camera crew on site 24 hours a day capturing all the action which will go live on the day. Also watch out for the indoor funfair on Sunday, with a bit of tidy Bingo. We had good weather in April which made for a wicked event but fear not about the weather in October because at the tidy Weekender we can guarantee Sunshine indoors!
