Toasted Frog Interview Reported by Leía / Submitted 20-05-02 17:04 Having been off the clubbing and promoting scene for almost a year, Derek the strange yet funny Irish Man, who thinks too fast for his own good and was promoter of the infamous night, 'Omnipotence' is back by demand to bring to you a memorable Bank Holiday night at the fabulous Glasshouse for the launch of 'Toasted Frog'. Leía: What have you been doing since the last Omnipotence and are there any plans to start Omnipotence again ? Derek: Well, I've been actually running a brothel in Thailand for the last year.... (joke).. After running Omnipotence for 3 years, last year I shocked lots of people by announcing on our 3rd birthday that Omnipotence would be NO more because I was going traveling and needed a break. Since then I've been traveling to Australian, Thailand and Ireland. Omnipotence, it still exists, but it depends on when I am going to do it. I think I will do a night some time soon and shock people. The reason I gave it up was because basically, I had some really good nights with Omnipotence, but there were times when I made really bad business decisions. I was more party organiser than I was a businessman. In the haze that is club land sometimes you make decisions on a Monday morning when you're not too sure of what is going on, because you're let's just say, really tired. Don't get me wrong; I've had some fantastic times running Omnipotence. Like when we did the Fevah, Frantic & Omnipotence Impact Boat Cruises to Hamburg, Germany. They were two very good business decisions. However clubbing just became a financial thing to me. I was always worried what was happening financially all the time. So, I decided to see what it was like to have fun when you went out, which I have been doing for the last year. Having said that, I kind of miss putting parties on. That's why I'm back, plus giving assistance to my friends who are putting on Toasted Frog. Leía: What do you miss about putting parties on? Derek: Just the buzz of going from place to place, and just wondering whether it's going to be successful or not, just the general London scene. It's really good fun, being out there. Plus I also love getting involved on the music side of things. Just generally being involved. When I came back I didn't think I was going to get involved with parties again, Will who runs 'What Industries' asked me for my assistance, since he's a good friend, and If I was going to do a party with anybody I'm going to do it with him. I didn't really know the people from 'Toast', but was basically introduced through an intermediary, and I thought it was a good idea. Plus also the Glasshouse is a fantastic venue. It also suits very much what I would call the 'Omnipotence' feel. Leía: Can you tell us more about 'What Industry Productions' Derek: What industries is a fledgeling company run by Will. Will is a very individual individual. He's got a great soul and he's a good person around the party scene and I can see him being very successful in the future. He's been a friend for years and I was more than happy to help him. So really my position for this party is more introduction to people within the industry, things like that. The nitty gritty, cause I know the industry basically. I know a lot people and contacts etc. Leía: Would it be fair to say 'Toasted Frog is a reincarnation of Omnipotence' ? Derek: Not at all, but we will involve what we call the friendliness of Omnipotence, because that is what we were famous for, it was kind of really pulling together, and when you went into Omnipotence you could feel that special vibe in the air. For instance the manager in the Fridge used to say, 'this is definitely an Omnipotence crowd' when Omnipotence was on. So hopefully we can pull back a lot of our people also to Toasted Frog. Having said that it's not only my party. It's a party I’m doing in conjunction with people. So Omnipotence will always be Omnipotence (sure is it not all around you ) ((in A mock Irish accent laughing)), and when we put that on, we will get back on the scene. With Toasted Frog we'll do something slightly different. Whereby incorporating Toast, which is a Hard House night run in Willesden along with What Industry Productions, which run small parties all over London, they will bring their entire crowd. Omnipotence will bring their DJ's and hopefully their crowd too. Leía: Elaborate more on the specific sound: Derek: Well it used to be more a Germanic trance beat. Also, DJ Amethyst from the label Hinotori which has a specific sound to it. We also played people like M Zone, and DJ Energy sometimes played for us. It was very much a faster German trance beat, which is quite unique. A lot of the clubs in the last year or so, which I think contributed to the down turn in club land, veer to much to what they term 'Hard Dance', so there are now not very many unique nights. So, in a nutshell 'Toasted Frog isn't a reincarnation of Omnipotence but the birth of a lovely kicking new hybrid. Toasted Frog is going to be made up of 3 distinct sounds. One room we'll have hard house in, which is going to be run by the 'Toast' boys, DJ's Samuel, Ryzar, Sean K, DVS, J-Edgar. The studio room is made up of DJ's who used to play at Omnipotence. There's Wez Wonder, who everybody at this stage will know after all his Toast releases including Global Killer and the forthcoming Awake. He's also been the first to have 2 consecutive singles of the month mentioned in the Hard House section of the Ministry of Sound Magazine as reviewed by BK. Keep an eye out for his Dance Diamante record label launch at the beginning of June. Then there's DJ Amethyst, who's famous for Hinotori sound, yes he is the brains behind all those kicking tunes. All you antipodeans out there you will probably remember DJ Amethyst playing the guitar whilst mixing on the Impact boat cruises to Germany. We also have Stingray from Emmigration who always rocks the house. In the Funky Room, we have Bootsy who is a mate of mine. He's just arrived back from Japan actually, where he played out there. He's also resident at Pacha, London and the Cross. He plays a real chill back funk. Then there is Toonez who is resident at Synergy. Toonez is going to kick out for the end of the night, with some nice funky beats as well. As you can see on the flyer for Friday 19 June 1998, at Chancery Lane. That was our 3rd party, where at that stage we'd already had John Fleming playing, DJ Amethyst. On the 3rd night we had Rudy, Spencer Freeland, Phil Reynolds, Ian Mac, Tony Price, so I suppose we ran fairly well straight from the beginning no stumbling crawling toddling etc. Its good to look at both flyers and think yeah that was fun - now let's have some more although maybe we will savour the fun more on the 1st of June.
