Heat - Review

Reported by Cosmic / Submitted 09-05-02 15:18

When I confirmed with Damian (Heat Promoter) that yes I would be able to come and review for him it seemed that all my wishes came true at once. In almost four years of London clubbing I've never quite found such an awesome combination of venue, DJs and damn nice promoters come together. The odds at one point had seemed stacked against them, with only three weeks to promote such an event and holding it bang in the middle of a bank holiday weekend all the hard work and success of previous Heats were to be put to the ultimate test...

From the very first time I went to Peach three years ago I fell in love with the Camden Palace as a venue. Since then I've been back countless times to various parties and had what up until now had been "defining moments in clubbing !". Heat at the Camden Palace was to be a whole new experience, why? We just knew! After much flaffing about and countless rechecks on "Have we got everything?", DJ on the night Bronson Vieira, our posse and I finally set off to Camden amazingly only a couple of hours late !

Coming out of the Underground which was seemingly overrun by Heat devotees, we all rounded the corner to be greeted by what even those privileged to be on the guest list would describe as a "Proper" queue. The night was alive, clubbers chatting and smoking excitedly as the queue moved forward. I think it's then that I realised that I too was out to just get on it and have an awesome time. For too long there have been BIG Club nights and not enough BIG Parties! From the very first Heat, (which was incidentally a BBQ in a back garden with DJ’s playing) the theme has always been come and Party with us... Very Infectious.

Once we were in, which didn't take very long thanks to combined efforts from Anton, Adam, Marc French and Bronson Vieira, I never looked back. And then, like some kind of Football team our group walked down the ramp and on to our playing field…

Camden Palace is one of those great venues that boast so much character, always something new to see and find and this wonderful feeling of cosiness due to the décor that adorns the walls and ceiling! Heat simply enhanced the eye candy factor by means of extra backdrops and a really clever transparent veil that the laser shot through enabling the effect of text and designs to appear mid air above the main floor! Wicked!

On the decks taking the party up a gear from Grant Thomson, whom sadly I had missed, was Tasty man Billy ‘Daniel’ Bunter. So good to see this hugely talented DJ play for such a strong antipodean crowd and his name is sure to rise in every clubbers heart after such an awesome set. K90’s live PA also was a treat for so many clubbers that I spoke to, it’s important for events as big as this to have some form of live act / PA. Clubbers who just go and dance regardless of what DJ is playing can see for themselves man and machine coupled together as the source of what’s making them feel so good and it helps enhance an already great feeling into a greater sense of appreciation. The next set in my view is quite possibly the best set to have. Everyone’s still on the heightened buzz of arriving, mixed with relaxing into the atmosphere and settling down for a good hard stomp! I don’t think there’s a person out there who knows this incredibly talented DJ that wasn’t behind him all the way as he took the roof off in spectacular Heat style. My hat (If I had one!) goes off to you Heat resident Marc French! Absolutely Awesome! You deserve everything!

Other sets on the night that I managed to catch whilst journeying up and downstairs included the last half hour of Nukleuz frontman BK who pleased me no end with a smooth fast pace of complete havin’ it basslines and stab patterns, (Good to stomp with you Commander Tom!) Phil Reynolds who was at the mid way point of his hugely hectic weekend dropping favourites not only old but managing to exercise that fantastic talent of his to drop a new unheard tune and have the whole dancefloor chatting “I Love This One!” And finally a special mention to the DJ who was celebrating his one year playing out anniversary to the day, Bronson Vieira. Playing the 3 - 4 am slot upstairs I’ve never seen that room squeeze so many in! With somewhere between two to three hundred loyal followers there to see their DJ play, it's little wonder that he played a blinding set knowing exactly what to do and where! Nice one DJ B!

So, on reflection a legendary night staged in the middle of an awesome weekend, Heat showcased for me and so many others the ultimate in Saturday night partying. As we look forward though, the boys from Heat show no signs of relaxing, with a new venue to conquer and if possible an even stronger loyal following than before to cater for. Never before has the future of London’s clubland looked so bright.

The next Heat is at Turnmills on Saturday 18 May (2pm till 10pm). For full details click here. See you there !
